That is a manufacturer claim, not an independently verified result or a same-track win over its rivals. A responsible shortlist also needs to distinguish street cars from factory-built race cars—and it cannot honestly produce ten comparable, evidence-backed entries from the available figures. Here are eight useful picks and what is actually established about each.
How to read this shortlist
This is a curated guide, not a ten-car test ranking. The available evidence does not provide independently measured quarter-mile times for ten cars under comparable conditions. The list therefore combines current street cars with factory competition cars and Factory Stock model families, while labeling those differences plainly. “Best” here means a relevant option for a particular kind of drag racing, not a claim that every entry is equally quick, available, or eligible for the same class.
Manufacturer acceleration figures are useful for understanding what a maker claims for a car, but they are not directly comparable to a track test unless conditions, tires, transmission, and measurement method match. NHRA class descriptions establish competition context; they do not prove that every trim in a named model family is eligible under current rules.
Eight muscle-car picks for drag racing
| Pick | Type | What is established | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 Dodge Charger Scat Pack | Current street car | Dodge rates it at 550 hp and 531 lb-ft, with standard AWD and selectable rear-wheel drive. Dodge publishes targets of 3.9 seconds from 0–60 mph and 12.2 seconds for the quarter mile. | A buyer who wants a current street car with a published manufacturer quarter-mile target and a choice of launch drivetrains. |
| 2026 Dodge Charger R/T | Current street car | Dodge lists 420 hp and 468 lb-ft and publishes a 12.9-second quarter-mile target. Its U.S. starting MSRP was announced as $49,995 in March 2026; check current pricing and availability. | A lower-output current Charger option for shoppers who do not need the Scat Pack’s stated power level. |
| 2026 Ford Mustang Dark Horse | Current street car | Ford rates its naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 at 500 hp and 418 lb-ft. The available evidence does not establish a comparable quarter-mile time. Edmunds characterizes its tuning as more road-course-oriented than drag-strip-oriented. | A V8 Mustang for someone who values broader performance and accepts that its published strengths are not specifically drag-focused. |
| Factory Stock Camaro | Showroom-ready competition entry | NHRA describes Factory Stock competition as including showroom-ready Camaros. The evidence here does not identify a specific eligible trim, current availability, or a comparable elapsed time. | A racer considering an eligible showroom-based Camaro; confirm the exact car against current class rules. |
| Factory Stock Mustang | Showroom-ready competition entry | NHRA describes the class as including showroom-ready Mustangs. That broad description does not establish eligibility for every Mustang version or a quarter-mile result for a particular trim. | A racer interested in heads-up Factory Stock competition who will verify the exact build and rules. |
| Factory Stock Challenger | Showroom-ready competition entry | NHRA includes showroom-ready Challengers in its Factory Stock description. The available evidence does not settle current availability of specific trims or the eligibility of a particular car under the current rulebook. | A competitor evaluating a Challenger for Factory Stock, subject to current availability and rulebook checks. |
| Chevrolet COPO Camaro | Factory drag special | Chevrolet says the COPO Camaro program began in 1969 as a drag-racing specialty for NHRA Stock Eliminator. It is a competition-oriented specialty, not an ordinary Camaro street trim; no comparable time or current availability is established here. | A buyer or racer investigating a factory drag-racing special rather than a regular road car. |
| 2026 Dodge Charger Hustle Stuff Drag Pak | Factory competition car | NHRA reported its debut as a supercharged Hemi competition car designed for Factory Stock Showdown. It is purpose-built for competition, not a consumer street-car recommendation; no comparable elapsed time is established here. | A racer looking at a purpose-built Factory Stock Showdown car, not a street-legal daily driver. |
Which one should you choose?
For a current street car with a published quarter-mile target
The 2026 Charger Scat Pack is the clearest fit in this evidence set. Dodge’s 12.2-second figure is a target published by the manufacturer, not an independent test result. Its standard AWD and selectable rear-wheel drive give it two drivetrain approaches, but the published figure should not be treated as proof of how either setup will perform on a particular track.

For a lower-output current Charger
The 2026 Charger R/T has a lower published power rating and a slower manufacturer quarter-mile target than the Scat Pack. Those are Dodge’s figures for the respective models, not a controlled comparison. Its announced U.S. starting price is dated to March 2026, so confirm the latest price with Dodge or a dealer before budgeting.
For a naturally aspirated V8 Mustang
The Dark Horse is the evidence-backed current Mustang choice here, with Ford’s 500-hp, 418-lb-ft rating. Its road-course emphasis matters: horsepower alone does not make it the best drag setup, and the available evidence does not supply a quarter-mile time that can be compared with Dodge’s targets.

For organized heads-up racing or a dedicated race car
Start with the class, not the badge. NHRA’s Factory Stock description names showroom-ready Camaros, Mustangs, and Challengers, but the exact car and current rule eligibility need checking. The COPO Camaro and Charger Hustle Stuff Drag Pak are different propositions: factory drag specials intended for competition rather than ordinary street use.
Street car or purpose-built drag car?
A street car offers road use and can be driven to the strip, but its manufacturer specifications do not tell you how a specific car will launch on a particular surface. A competition car is designed around its class and intended use; it should not be mistaken for a regular production trim just because it carries a familiar model name. Before choosing, decide whether you need road legality, a specific NHRA class, or both, then confirm eligibility and equipment requirements for the exact car with the current rulebook or sanctioning body.

What makes a fair drag-strip comparison?
A useful comparison needs more than horsepower ratings. Quarter-mile results can depend on the specific model year and transmission, launch setup, tire configuration, track and weather conditions, and whether a number is a manufacturer target or an independently timed pass. The Dodge figures above are manufacturer-published targets; Ford’s supplied Dark Horse specifications do not include a quarter-mile figure. No common test establishes a winner between these cars.
For an actual purchase or race decision, compare exact configurations and current class rules. For a pass at the strip, use tires and equipment appropriate to the vehicle and event, and follow the track’s safety requirements. Neither a model-family mention in a class overview nor a manufacturer acceleration target substitutes for checking the specific car.

What this list can—and cannot—tell you
The current, quantified street-car choices supported here are the 2026 Charger Scat Pack, Charger R/T, and Mustang Dark Horse. NHRA and Chevrolet materials add relevant Factory Stock and factory-special competition context, but they do not provide a ten-car set of comparable quarter-mile results. That is why this shortlist has eight entries rather than padding the ranking with unsupported models or made-up times.
