Best Motorcycles for Older Riders: How to Choose for Comfort and Safety

No motorcycle is best for every older rider. Learn how to evaluate fit, low-speed manageability and safety, with two low-seat candidates to investigate.

There is no single motorcycle that is best for every older rider—and the available evidence does not establish an age-based ranking. The better choice is the bike that fits your body, strength, experience, and usual rides, and that you can manage confidently at low speed and while stopped. Treat the Kawasaki Eliminator and Honda Rebel 500 below as candidates to inspect, not as proven recommendations.

How to judge whether a motorcycle fits you

Seat height matters, but it is only one part of fit. A low seat can still feel awkward if it is wide, the controls are far away, or the rider’s hips and knees are uncomfortable. Evaluate the exact motorcycle in person, preferably with a test ride where available.

  • Stationary control: Can you steady the bike when stopped, move it off its stand, and maneuver it in a parking space? Consider the actual ready-to-ride weight and how that weight feels, not just a published dry-weight figure.
  • Seat and reach: Check seat height and width together. Notice whether you can put your feet down in a way that feels secure; inseam alone does not determine ground reach.
  • Posture and controls: Sit in your normal riding position. Check reach to the handlebar, clutch, brake, and switches, and whether your back, wrists, hips, and knees remain comfortable.
  • Low-speed demands: Assess balance, steering effort, clutch feel, and transmission operation in the situations you will actually encounter, such as a tight turn or a sloped driveway.
  • Trip and support: A bike that feels comfortable around town may not suit longer rides or a passenger. Confirm local dealer access and parts or service support for the model and year you are considering.

If a health condition, disability, reduced grip, or limited mobility affects riding, discuss practical adaptations with a qualified clinician or motorcycle ergonomics professional. Do not assume that a model’s low seat or marketing description resolves an individual limitation.

Two low-seat candidates to investigate

These examples have manufacturer-published fit clues, but the available figures do not support a comprehensive market ranking. Confirm specifications for your country, model year, and trim before comparing them.

  • THE BLACK PAIR FOR TOURING (<60MPH) - Built-in acoustic filters precisely reduce harmful noise like wind blast and engine roar, letting through horns, sirens, intercoms and navigation prompts that matters on the road. They can also lower the volume but ensure clear & crisp listening at concerts, festivals, raves, live sports, nightlife, tinnitus relief, etc.
  • THE RED PAIR FOR RACING (>60MPH) - At highway speeds, wind & engine noise can easily exceed 100dB, putting your hearing at risk within 7 minutes. With 26dB noise reduction, they can not only protect your hearing very well in moto racing, but also create a quiet space for your sleeping, focus, travel, work, studying, meditating, and commuting.
  • FIT HELMET, ALL DAY COMFORT - Made from soft silicone with ergonomic design, the low-profile shape sits flush with your ear canal, no interference with helmet. Comes with 3 sizes of ear tips (S/M/L), you can swap them to match your ear canal for the perfect-fit, keeping secure and comfortable.

Candidate Published fit clues What to verify in person or for the exact trim
Kawasaki Eliminator Kawasaki lists a 28.9-inch seat, a relaxed upright position, and estimated dry weight starting at 359.4 lb for the non-ABS version. Kawasaki notes that dry weight excludes operating fluids and other items. Kawasaki specifications Ready-to-ride weight, year and trim, ABS availability, foot placement, seat width, control reach, and comfort for a passenger or longer trip.
Honda Rebel 500 Honda’s page lists a 27.2-inch seat and says ABS is standard on all trims shown on that page. The page is year-specific. Honda Rebel 500 specifications Specifications for the current model year and your market, ready-to-ride weight, posture, individual fit, and comfort over your typical distance.

The seat figures are not a substitute for trying the actual bike. A narrower seat may allow a rider to reach the ground more easily than a wider seat at the same stated height, and the listed dry weight for the Eliminator is not the weight of a fueled, ready-to-ride motorcycle.

Safety matters more than a model label

Motorcycling carries substantial risk. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that 6,228 motorcyclists died in 2024, accounting for 16% of all traffic fatalities. That figure describes national fatalities, not the risk to an individual rider. NHTSA motorcycle safety

NHTSA advises riders to use a DOT-compliant helmet, improve visibility, ride sober, obtain proper licensing, and complete rider education. Its current page reports helmet use at 74% in 2023. NHTSA’s countermeasures guide summarizes estimates that helmets reduce rider fatalities by 22% to 42% and brain injuries by 41% to 69%; these are ranges summarized by the guide, not results of a new NHTSA study. For training, NHTSA says: “Contact your state motor vehicle administration to find a motorcycle rider-training course near you.” Licensing requirements vary by state, so check with your state motor vehicle agency.

Age statistics need careful interpretation. NHTSA’s guide, citing the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, reports that riders 50 and older accounted for 37% of motorcyclist fatalities in 2019, compared with 3% in 1975. Those are shares of fatalities in those years; they do not show that age causes crashes or predict any individual rider’s risk. NHTSA guide to the motorcycle safety problem

A practical way to make the decision

  1. Write down the rides you expect to take, including typical distance, road type, and whether you will carry a passenger.
  2. Compare the exact year and trim on manufacturer pages, including ABS availability and ready-to-ride weight where published.
  3. Visit a dealer and sit on the specific motorcycle. Check your footing, control reach, posture, and ability to maneuver it while stationary.
  4. Arrange a test ride if available, or take a qualified rider-training course before committing. Evaluate slow-speed control as well as comfort in motion.
  5. Choose based on fit and your ability to manage the bike—not on age, seat height, or a claim that a motorcycle is “easy” or “safe” for seniors.
