- Match capacity to the actual vehicle and recovery. Check GVWR and the winch maker’s documentation, then account for recovery conditions and the complete system rather than assuming a single rating guarantees suitability.
- Confirm the tool’s intended use. A hand winch for pulling or positioning and a dead-load cable puller have distinct uses. Do not substitute one for a vehicle-mounted recovery winch without documentation establishing suitability.
- Check the whole setup. Verify mounting and system components against the instructions for the specific winch and vehicle.

Polaris’s recovery guidance says to keep people out of line with the winch cable where possible, protect a tree with a strap when using it as an anchor, and maintain at least five full turns of cable on the drum.
