The best left running board is the one that fits your exact truck and makes the step where you need it—without compromising the clearance or access your work and driving require. Check year, make, model, cab, and bed before comparing width, length, traction, and installation. The examples below illustrate different designs; they are manufacturer listings, not a tested ranking.
What running boards add to a truck
Chevrolet describes its assist steps—also called running boards or side steps—as a stepping surface for getting in and out, reaching the roof or bed, and helping shield outer body panels from stones and debris. Chevrolet also describes textured surfaces for traction and corrosion resistance on the products discussed here. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independent performance findings.
Boards vary substantially in form. The examples here range from a 3-inch flat, high-clearance off-road step to a 6-inch-wide rectangular wheel-to-wheel board. A separate Chevrolet work step listing gives a 2.63-inch step height. Those figures describe different products and measurements; they are not directly interchangeable measures of comfort or protection.
Start with exact fitment
Fitment is the first buying check. A board that fits one cab or bed configuration may not fit another, even within the same truck model. Confirm the exact year, make, model, cab, and bed on the live product listing, and look for exclusions.

- TYGER lists Kobra applications for specified 2015–2026 F-150, 2022–2026 F-150 Lightning, and 2017–2026 F-250/F-350 Super Duty trucks. Its listing restricts fitment to four-door SuperCrew configurations and excludes SuperCab.
These examples show why a generic “fits F-150” or “fits Silverado” claim is not enough. Model-year ranges and cab exclusions can change; use the manufacturer’s current fitment selector before ordering.
Compare board shape, coverage, and clearance
Choose based on where you need a foothold and how much clearance you want to retain. A narrow, flat step may suit a truck used on trails where a lower-profile design matters. A broad wheel-to-wheel board can offer a larger stepping surface and reach farther along the truck. A drop-step design places a step below the board, which may help with entry but should be assessed against the ground clearance stated for the exact product.

Chevrolet lists a warranty term of 12 months or 12,000 miles, or the remaining bumper-to-bumper warranty if longer, for the Silverado 1500 wheel-to-wheel assist steps. The accessed listing does not state a year for that warranty term. Review the current warranty terms for the specific part and vehicle.

Check installation requirements
Installation details are product-specific. Chevrolet says the cited assist steps include mounting hardware and an instruction sheet, require no drilling, and can be installed or removed without special tools. TYGER describes the Kobra as a bolt-on installation with included brackets and hardware. Follow the instructions for the exact part and application; do not assume that another board uses the same mounting points or process.
- Confirm the full truck configuration in the manufacturer’s fitment selector.
- Check the listing for included brackets and hardware, drilling requirements, and installation instructions.
- Before installation, compare the supplied components and instructions with the truck and stop if the application or parts do not match.
Choose for your use, not a universal ranking
- For trail-oriented use: Consider a design explicitly described as high-clearance, then verify its fit and position against your truck and driving needs.
- For a broad foothold or access along the bed: Compare the listed width and length of wheel-to-wheel options, while checking whether that coverage suits your bed and cab.
- For a lower step position: Look at drop-step designs and the manufacturer’s stated clearance, recognizing that specifications alone do not establish real-world performance.
- For work-truck use: Compare the step location, surface, fitment, installation requirements, and warranty rather than relying on the word “work” in a product name.
No independent comparative test in the available product information establishes one of these boards as best overall. The practical choice depends on exact fitment and the trade-off you prefer between foothold size, coverage, clearance, and access.

Care and replacement
Chevrolet advises replacing worn or missing step pads when damage is noticed because damaged pads can lose gripping ability. It also advises replacing an assist step or affected components if damage could compromise function. Chevrolet says its cited steps are car-wash safe when properly installed, while recommending that owners check local car-wash fit concerns. These care and wash statements apply to Chevrolet’s cited products, not automatically to every running board or wash system.
