The best large SUV of 2023 depends on what you need it to do: the Chevrolet Tahoe is a strong all-around choice, the Ford Expedition stands out for towing, the Toyota Sequoia pairs a standard hybrid powertrain with notable output, and the Jeep Wagoneer leads a five-model passenger-volume comparison. For more cargo behind the third row, compare extended-length models such as the Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon XL and Jeep Wagoneer L. The right pick depends on body length, seating layout, engine and trim—not just the name on the tailgate.
What counts as a full-size SUV?
Here, “large SUV” means a traditional U.S. full-size, three-row SUV such as the Tahoe, Expedition, Sequoia, Wagoneer, Armada or Yukon. Some are also sold in extended-length forms that trade easier maneuverability for more cargo capacity. These are not interchangeable: engines, drivetrain, seating arrangement and trim can change performance, towing limits, fuel economy and passenger space.
There is no single objective winner across every criterion. The recommendations below reflect published comparisons and editorial assessments, not a uniform test of every trim. Use them to build a shortlist, then verify the specifications of the exact vehicle you plan to buy.
Which 2023 large SUV should you shortlist?

What are the differences between the leading models?
Chevrolet Tahoe: a balanced standard-length option
Car and Driver’s ranking points to the Tahoe’s quiet interior, cargo room and towing capability as strengths. MotorTrend reports that the 2023 Tahoe and GMC Yukon share a platform and components and have the same engine-family choices and maximum tow figures in the configurations it discusses. Fuel-economy and towing figures vary with engine and drivetrain. MotorTrend lists 21 mpg city and 28 mpg highway for the rear-wheel-drive 2023 Tahoe with the 3.0L diesel. For the 5.3L V8, it gives maximum tow ratings of 8,400 lb for 2WD and 8,200 lb for 4WD. Those figures apply to the named configurations, not every Tahoe. MotorTrend’s Tahoe–Yukon comparison
Ford Expedition: consider it for towing and capability
Car and Driver describes the Expedition as a three-row SUV with off-road capability and towing capacity above 9,000 pounds. Treat that as a model-line headline, not a rating for every Expedition: the actual tow limit depends on equipment and configuration. Match the specific vehicle’s rating to the trailer and load you intend to tow.
One comparison caveat matters: MotorTrend’s December 2022 on-paper comparison uses a 2022 Expedition in at least one table. Do not treat those specific table values as 2023 specifications. MotorTrend’s comparison

Toyota Sequoia: hybrid output, with a row-three trade-off
The redesigned 2023 Sequoia uses a standard i-FORCE MAX twin-turbo V6 hybrid powertrain. Toyota reports 437 hp and 583 lb-ft, plus 22 mpg combined in its comparison with a Tahoe configuration shown at 17 mpg combined. Those manufacturer figures make the Sequoia an efficiency standout in that comparison, but they do not establish a universal real-world fuel-economy ranking. Check the EPA listing for the specific year, engine and drivetrain.
Passenger space is a separate consideration. MotorTrend’s comparison table gives the Sequoia 28.1 inches of third-row legroom, less than the Tahoe, Expedition and Wagoneer figures in that table. If adults or older children will regularly ride in the third row, try the seats in person rather than relying on overall passenger-volume figures. MotorTrend’s comparison
Jeep Wagoneer and Wagoneer L: room, but distinguish the versions
MotorTrend’s five-vehicle comparison identifies the standard Wagoneer as the largest vehicle in its set and lists 179.2 cu ft of passenger volume. Its table also gives the Wagoneer 36.6 inches of third-row legroom, compared with 34.9 inches for the Tahoe. These are figures from that particular comparison, not a complete market-wide ranking. Do not conflate Wagoneer with Grand Wagoneer, or a standard-length SUV with its L version. Car and Driver reports 44 cu ft behind the third row for the Grand Wagoneer L. GMC Yukon and Yukon XL: Tahoe capability with a different emphasis
The Yukon shares much of its underlying capability with the Tahoe, according to MotorTrend, while placing more emphasis on upscale materials and technology. Compare equivalent engines, drivetrains and equipment before weighing prices. For extra length and cargo utility, the Yukon XL belongs on the same extended-body shortlist as the Suburban and Wagoneer L.

Kelley Blue Book describes the Armada as a value-oriented choice with V8 performance. But in MotorTrend’s five-model comparison, it had the smallest passenger volume of the vehicles included. If cabin room is decisive, compare the actual seating positions and cargo needs rather than assuming that a full-size badge guarantees the most usable space.

Which large SUV has the most passenger or cargo space?
For passenger volume, MotorTrend’s five-model comparison puts the Wagoneer first at 179.2 cu ft. Its table also lists 36.6 inches of third-row legroom for the Wagoneer and 34.9 inches for the Tahoe. These measurements cover the source’s comparison set, not every 2023 full-size SUV, and passenger volume does not capture seat shape, access or comfort.
For cargo behind the third row, the available figure here is 44 cu ft for the Jeep Grand Wagoneer L, as reported by Car and Driver. The Suburban, Yukon XL and Wagoneer L are extended-body models worth comparing when you need to carry passengers and luggage together. Confirm cargo measurements and seat layouts for the exact model and trim; published figures are not necessarily based on identical measurement methods.

“Better buy” depends on the combination of purchase price, equipment, fuel use, passenger needs and towing capability that matters to you. Kelley Blue Book’s 2023 list includes the Expedition, Expedition MAX and Tahoe among its highest-rated models, and labels the Wagoneer L its least expensive listed entry at the displayed starting price. - Compare the same body length, engine, drivetrain and seating configuration; a base standard-wheelbase model is not an apples-to-apples match for a heavily equipped extended version.
- Check the window sticker and purchase documents for the actual vehicle’s equipment and configuration.
- Include fuel costs and the space you need with all intended seats occupied, not just the starting price.
- For towing, compare the vehicle’s documented maximum with your loaded trailer and account for the applicable payload and hitch limits.
How to verify fuel economy, towing and safety
Fuel economy
EPA certification information is organized by model year, and the agency’s certification-data resource is a starting point rather than a complete, easy-to-read comparison of every 2023 configuration. Look up the exact year, engine, drivetrain and body style in the EPA annual certification-data resource or current EPA vehicle lookup. Toyota’s Sequoia–Tahoe MPG comparison and MotorTrend’s Tahoe diesel figures are configuration-specific references, not substitutes for checking the exact vehicle.
Towing
Do not shop by the biggest number in a model’s advertising alone. Verify the specific SUV’s towing rating in its window sticker and owner documentation, then check the trailer’s loaded weight and the vehicle’s payload and hitch limits. An engine or drivetrain change can alter the maximum rating.
Safety
NHTSA’s 5-Star Safety Ratings assess frontal, side and rollover crash protection; one star is the lowest rating and five the highest. Its January 12, 2023 announcement listed some model-year 2023 vehicles planned for testing, including the Jeep Wagoneer and Nissan Armada. MotorTrend reports four overall NHTSA stars for the Tahoe and Yukon, with four frontal, five side and three rollover stars. Because the available evidence does not establish comparable records for every model in this shortlist, it is not enough to declare a safety winner. Check NHTSA’s current record for the exact model year and vehicle before comparing ratings.

What to check before buying
- Body length: Decide whether standard length will work for parking and maneuvering, or whether an extended body’s cargo room is worth the extra length.
- Third-row use: Sit in the third row and test access, especially if adults will ride there regularly.
- Seating layout: Confirm whether the vehicle has captain’s chairs or a bench. Car and Driver notes that the Tahoe/Suburban/Yukon family can offer nine-passenger seating with a front bench option, but availability depends on configuration.
- Exact capability: Confirm the selected vehicle’s tow rating, payload and drivetrain in its documentation instead of applying a model-line maximum to every trim.
- Exact efficiency and safety data: Use the EPA and NHTSA records for the model year and configuration you are considering.
