New Atlas and RV.com highlighted different models for different uses; their selections are useful starting points, not standardized test winners. First decide whether you want a self-propelled vehicle or a trailer, then compare the rig’s layout, loaded weight, terrain capability, utilities, price and local service support.
How to read the 2025 picks
This is a retrospective of vehicles that received editorial attention in 2025, not a definitive ranking for every buyer. New Atlas presented rigs that made an impression during the year, while RV.com chose favorites in separate categories. Neither roundup used a common scoring system to compare, for example, a luxury Class A motorhome with a small off-road trailer. The dates below are dates of New Atlas coverage, not confirmed first-sale or delivery dates.
Start with the type of setup you want. A camper van or motorhome is both living space and the vehicle you drive. A travel trailer, fifth wheel or truck camper needs a suitable tow vehicle. Expedition motorhomes and 4×4 conversions prioritize access to rougher routes, but an off-road label is not a guarantee that a particular rig can handle every surface or trail.
- Fit: Check occupant and sleeping capacity, floor plan, storage, and the rig’s length, width and height against how and where you travel.
- Weight and drivetrain: For a towable, compare the actual loaded trailer and its tongue or pin weight with the tow vehicle’s ratings and payload—not just the trailer’s marketing category. For a motorized RV, consider the chassis, drivetrain and intended roads.
- Utilities: Compare battery, charging, solar, freshwater and waste capacity with your expected use. Specifications alone do not establish how long you can camp without hookups.
- Ownership: Check the price and exact build sheet for the model year you want, along with warranty terms, dealer support, service access and local availability.
New Atlas’ notable large RVs and campers of 2025
New Atlas’ selections span production-oriented vehicles, unusual configurations and concepts. The roundup is best read as a collection of noteworthy designs rather than a ranked buying guide.

Torsus Praetorian off-road motorhome
Covered by New Atlas on June 15, 2025, the Praetorian is a 4×4 bus platform converted into an expedition motorhome. The appeal is the large, self-propelled format for travelers who want living space in a rugged-platform vehicle. New Atlas used “camp-anywhere” language, but that is promotional framing, not a tested guarantee of access or capability on every route.
Robeta Ananya
New Atlas covered the Ananya on August 5, 2025, describing it as a luxury “glampervan.” The publication called it the “world’s first” in its description; that is an attributed editorial claim, not an independently established category-wide fact. Treat the name and positioning as a cue to investigate its specific layout, equipment and market availability.
Auriga Explorer
In its October 5, 2025 coverage, New Atlas described the Auriga Explorer as an expandable camper truck with a pop-top and three slide-outs, accommodating four. It is a pickup-based camper concept or model, not a large van. Buyers comparing it with a van should consider the complete truck-and-camper dimensions, payload and configuration, not just the number of berths.
Storyteller Overland family Mode Sprinter
New Atlas covered this family-oriented Sprinter on March 27, 2025. Its distinguishing feature is a hard-sided pop-up arrangement with five sleeping berths, more than the common four-berth layout noted in the roundup. Sleeping capacity does not by itself show whether the layout will suit a particular family; check how the berths are arranged and what space remains for daily use.

New Atlas reported on September 23, 2025, that Thor Industries had introduced the Embark as a range-extended electric Class A motorhome. The article called it the market’s first of its type. Keep that “first” claim attributed to New Atlas and dated: a market-priority claim can be disputed or overtaken, and the coverage does not establish real-world range, efficiency or current orderability.
Lifestyle Iconn E4 XK
In coverage dated June 29, 2025, New Atlas described the Iconn E4 XK as a hybrid caravan/trailer with seating and sleeping space for five and a side-wall gourmet kitchen. Terminology and equipment can vary by market and build, so confirm the manufacturer’s exact model name, configuration and specifications before comparing it with other towables.
Rossmönster Skye Van
New Atlas featured the Skye Van on March 12, 2025, positioning it as a Sprinter-based camper for upscale comfort and backcountry use. That combination may interest travelers who want a van format without giving up a more comfort-oriented interior. The description does not establish a particular level of off-road capability; verify the drivetrain, tires, ground clearance and equipment on the actual build.

Pebble motorized trailer
New Atlas’ July 2, 2025 article described Pebble as a production camper trailer that can propel and hitch itself. Those are meaningful technology and availability claims, but the roundup alone does not establish current orderability or delivery geography. Prospective buyers should check the maker’s current production status, delivery area, operating requirements and support arrangements.

Bürstner Signature
Covered by New Atlas on September 15, 2025, the Signature is a “plus-camper” concept built around transforming space, fiberglass construction and upscale trim. Its flexible design is the point of interest; the roundup does not establish current pricing or availability. Confirm the specific model year and whether the configuration is offered in the market where you plan to buy.
AC Future Transforming Home RV
New Atlas covered this multi-expanding RV prototype on January 9, 2025, after it was shown at CES 2025. It is useful as an example of space-expanding design, but should be treated as a prototype—not as a commercially available RV on the evidence in that coverage.
InTech flagship trailer
In a January 14, 2025 feature, New Atlas described InTech’s flagship as a dual-axle family trailer with hideaway or transforming features and rugged construction. The roundup supplies a broad design description rather than a full specification sheet. Compare the exact floor plan, loaded weight, dimensions and equipment for the model and trim you are considering.
RV.com’s category favorites and buyer-facing examples
RV.com’s January 9, 2025 roundup selected favorites in distinct categories. The descriptions below identify the use cases the publication highlighted; a category pick is not proof that the vehicle will fit every buyer in that category.

Lance 1172 Truck Camper
RV.com listed this truck camper with two slide-outs, a dry bath, kitchen, dinette and couch. Its source-era figures were a dry weight of 4,063 lb, a length of 20 ft 4 in, sleeping capacity of five to six and MSRP of $84,266. Dry weight is not the loaded weight, and truck compatibility depends on the actual truck’s payload and ratings as well as the camper’s loaded configuration.
Coachmen Euro 25EU
RV.com highlighted the Euro 25EU as a compact Class A. Its inclusion is a reminder that motorhomes need not be full-size luxury coaches, but the roundup does not provide dimensions or a full equipment comparison for this model.

Newmar King Aire
The King Aire was RV.com’s luxury motorhome example. The roundup listed a source-era MSRP of $1,637,440, making it a very different proposition from the more compact or towable picks on the same list. The figure is not a current quote or transaction price.
SylvanSport GOAT
RV.com selected the GOAT as an off-road pop-up camper and utility trailer. It listed a source-era MSRP of $19,495. Its compact trailer format is unlike a self-contained motorhome, so compare the trailer’s intended use and equipment as well as the tow vehicle it requires.
Westfalia Wave Pop-Top
RV.com listed the Wave as a Class B camper van that sleeps six. Check the actual sleeping arrangement and how the pop-top is used when evaluating that capacity; a berth count alone does not describe everyday cabin space.
Outside Van Parks
The Parks was highlighted as an AWD Sprinter Class B. All-wheel drive may be relevant to a buyer’s routes, but the label alone does not establish off-road performance. Check the specific build and equipment against the surfaces and conditions you expect to encounter.
Keystone Montana High Country 397FB
RV.com chose this model as a family fifth wheel. A fifth wheel needs a compatible tow vehicle and hitch setup; compare the actual loaded trailer weight, pin weight and truck ratings before treating a published tow-vehicle category as a match.
Living Vehicle HD30
RV.com highlighted the HD30 as an off-grid trailer and listed a 100-gallon freshwater tank, 600 W solar array and 4,800 Wh lithium battery. These are published configuration specifications, not a promise of a particular number of days away from hookups. Weather, sunlight, charging, water use and power consumption all affect practical autonomy.
Ember Overland Edition 221MSL
RV.com’s off-road trailer pick was listed with 1,200 W of solar. Solar wattage alone does not establish how much power will be available in a particular location or season, or how long the trailer can operate without hookups.

THOR Outlaw
RV.com selected the Outlaw as a Class A toy hauler, a motorhome format for buyers who want cargo or recreational equipment space as part of the vehicle. Review the garage and living-area layout alongside the vehicle’s dimensions and carrying capacities for the intended load.
Storyteller Overland GXV HILT
RV.com highlighted the HILT as a heavy-duty expedition motorhome. Its listed figures were a 27 ft length, 19,500 lb GVWR, sleeping capacity of four, 16.8 kWh house batteries, 120-gallon freshwater capacity and source-era MSRP of $446,322. The power and water figures describe capacity, not real-world runtime or time off-grid; actual results depend on use and conditions.
A named opinion on a couples’ trailer
RV.com contributor Josh Winters (@JOSHTHERVNERD) favored the 27-foot Keystone Cougar 22MLS for couples and noted that many half-ton trucks can tow it. That is his opinion, not a general towing guarantee: compatibility depends on the specific truck, payload, ratings, hitch and loaded trailer.
What the published prices and specifications can—and cannot—tell you
The MSRP examples in RV.com’s January 2025 roundup show how widely its featured RVs differed in price. They are historical list prices reported in that roundup, not current offers, transaction prices or directly comparable ownership costs.
| RV.com example | Source-era MSRP | Other listed detail |
|---|---|---|
| SylvanSport GOAT | $19,495 | Off-road pop-up camper/utility trailer |
| Lance 1172 Truck Camper | $84,266 | Dry weight 4,063 lb; sleeps five to six; 20 ft 4 in long |
| Storyteller Overland GXV HILT | $446,322 | GVWR 19,500 lb; sleeps four; 27 ft long |
| Newmar King Aire | $1,637,440 | Luxury motorhome |
RV.com’s figures are useful as source-time reference points, but not as a current budget. Model year, trim, options, dealer pricing and inventory may change. The same caution applies to capacities: a tank, battery or solar-array rating is a component specification, not an independently measured performance result.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose among the different RV types
Choose the basic format first
A self-propelled camper van or motorhome combines the living space and driving vehicle. A travel trailer, fifth wheel or truck camper separates them, so you must also account for the tow vehicle, payload and hitch arrangement. A motorized trailer such as the Pebble, as described by New Atlas, adds a distinct propulsion feature, but its current production and delivery status needs confirmation.
Match capability to the routes you actually take
“Off-road,” “overland,” AWD and 4×4 are not interchangeable performance guarantees. Look at the specific chassis and drivetrain, ground clearance, tires, dimensions, weight and any relevant equipment. Large expedition vehicles can offer more living space, but their size may limit where they can travel or park.

Verify fit using the exact build
For a towable, use the loaded rig’s actual numbers and the tow vehicle’s ratings, including payload; a dry-weight figure is only one part of the calculation. For any RV, confirm length, width and height against storage, parking and route constraints. Published capacities can vary by configuration, so obtain the build sheet for the specific model year and trim.
Test the layout against real routines
Sleeping capacity is only one measure of fit. Consider where people sleep, eat and store equipment, how the kitchen and bathroom work, and whether the space remains usable during bad weather or when beds are deployed. A family van with five berths, for example, solves a different problem from a roomy trailer designed for a fixed campsite.
Estimate autonomy from consumption, not headline numbers
Compare freshwater and waste capacity, battery storage, charging sources and solar equipment with your expected daily use. Sunlight and weather affect solar charging; appliances and habits affect power demand; water use determines how quickly tanks are depleted. The published figures for the Living Vehicle HD30, Ember 221MSL and GXV HILT do not establish a shared or guaranteed off-grid duration.
Confirm what is available where you live
Before shortlisting a 2025 feature or specification, ask the manufacturer or dealer for the current model year, exact equipment, order status and local service options. This matters especially for prototypes, attributed “first” claims and products whose production, delivery geography or configuration may have changed since the coverage date.

The RV Industry Association reported 342,220 wholesale RV shipments in 2025, up 2.5% from 2024. Its reported totals included 306,191 towable RV shipments and 36,029 motorhome shipments; the category table listed 232,530 travel trailers and 8,224 van campers (Type B). These are manufacturer shipments, not retail sales, registrations, demand measurements or evidence that any model in these roundups was popular. RVIA said November counts were revised upward by 99 units because of late survey responses.
RVIA President and CEO Craig Kirby said in the association’s December 2025 year-end shipment report: “2025 year-end shipments finished up slightly and in line with the forecasts shared by ITR Economics throughout the year,” The association’s 2025 profile also reported that 88 percent of U.S. and Canadian RV production was in Indiana and gave a $20.40 billion retail value for wholesale shipments totaling 342,220 units. Those profile figures are industry context, not model-level sales data.
