There is no single best intake manifold gasket for every engine. The right choice is the gasket that matches your vehicle’s exact engine and port geometry, withstands the fluids and operating conditions it will encounter, and is installed according to its product-specific instructions. Start with year, make, model, and engine—not a brand or a performance claim.
What an intake manifold gasket does
The intake manifold routes incoming air through runners toward the cylinders. The gasket seals the manifold to the engine, and depending on the design, may also seal passages that carry coolant. Because it can be exposed to oil and coolant as well as heat and engine vacuum, its materials and sealing construction need to suit the application.
How to choose the right gasket
Verify the exact application
Identify the vehicle’s year, make, model, and engine, then confirm the gasket configuration in the manufacturer’s current catalog. If the cylinder heads or intake manifold have been changed or their ports modified, verify those details too. A part described as fitting a broad vehicle range may still not match every engine in that range.
Compare port shape and size
Check the gasket openings against the actual intake manifold and cylinder-head ports. A misaligned opening can restrict the intended passage or fail to seal as designed. Some performance gaskets are made to be trimmed for modified ports; trimming is appropriate only when the product instructions permit it and dimensions have been checked. It is not a substitute for confirming fit.

Match construction to use
Manufacturers offer different combinations of fiber material, steel cores or carriers, molded rubber, and elastomeric or silicone sealing beads. Those features describe construction, not a universal ranking: whether they help depends on the engine and application. Distinguish a street repair from a modified, high-vacuum, racing, marine, or towing application, and choose a design whose stated use matches yours.
Check what the set includes
Some manifold installation sets include related seals needed for the job. Coverage varies by application, so check the current catalog entry and the package contents rather than assuming every kit includes the same parts. MAHLE lists examples for particular engine families; that does not establish fitment or kit contents for other engines.

Repair gaskets and performance gaskets are not interchangeable by default
For an ordinary repair, prioritize verified fitment, sealing design, and the manufacturer’s service guidance. A performance build may need a different material or port shape to suit a modified head, manifold, or operating condition. Fel-Pro describes some performance options as trim-to-fit fiber gaskets or solid metal-core choices. MAHLE describes fiber-faced, double-perforated steel-core options and port shapes for factory performance and aftermarket racing heads. These examples do not establish that the products fit the same engines; compare the actual dimensions and application information.
As a vehicle-specific example—not a recommendation for an unspecified vehicle—Fel-Pro identifies MS 98016 T as a PermaDryPlus option for selected GM truck and van applications, with year and engine ranges described on its technical page. Confirm the exact vehicle and current catalog fitment before buying.

What manufacturer testing can—and cannot—tell you
Fel-Pro reports that, in a dynamometer comparison, another gasket began leaking coolant after 140 hours, while its MS98003T gasket achieved more than 85% compression recovery. The reviewed page does not state the test year, and these are manufacturer-reported results rather than an independent, cross-brand comparison. They do not show that the same result applies to every engine, gasket, or operating condition. No universal winner follows from these figures.

Coolant leakage, overheating, a warning light, or rough running can be associated with an intake manifold gasket problem, but each can also have other causes. None of these symptoms alone proves the gasket has failed. If they occur, have the vehicle diagnosed rather than choosing a replacement gasket based on symptoms alone.

Install according to the specific gasket instructions
Sealant guidance varies by product. For its PermaDryPlus intake gaskets, Fel-Pro specifies clean, dry mating surfaces and no additional sealant on the gasket faces. It says RTV supplied with a set is used only at the bottom corners where the gasket meets the end seals, when the kit instructions call for it. This is not a universal rule for every brand or gasket design.
Fel-Pro’s technical sheet states: “To ensure these technologies work in the way they were designed to, these intake manifold gaskets must be installed on a clean, dry surface with no additional sealants used.” Follow the instructions supplied with the exact part being installed, including directions for orientation and any sealant locations.
