Best High-Pressure Engine Oil Pumps for Performance: How to Choose

The best high-pressure oil pump depends on engine fitment and oil demand. See how Melling’s 10295 and 10296 differ, and what to verify before installation.

There is no single best high-pressure oil pump for every performance engine. The right pump depends on the exact engine family, its oil demand, and the build’s clearances and oil-system layout. For compatible GM Gen III/IV applications, Melling’s 10295 is a stock-volume, high-pressure option; the 10296 is high-volume and high-pressure. Neither is a universal LS upgrade: verify fitment and choose volume to match the engine builder’s requirements.

High pressure and high volume solve different problems

A pump’s pressure-relief setting and its displacement are separate characteristics. A stronger relief spring delays the relief valve opening, changing pressure behavior at higher engine speeds. Melling says the high-pressure spring does not affect performance at low engine speeds. A high-volume pump instead moves more oil per revolution by increasing gear or gerotor displacement.

More volume is appropriate when the engine needs more flow—not simply because it is modified. Melling identifies increased bearing clearances, high-RPM operation, remote filters or external coolers, and some engine modifications as reasons for added oil flow. Its guidance says engines without increased oil demand should use stock volume. Melling characterizes its high-volume pumps as delivering an average 20% more flow; that is a manufacturer statement, not an independent result or a figure that applies to every model. See Melling’s oil-pump selection guidance.

Two Melling options for listed GM Gen III/IV applications

The figures below are specifications in Melling’s GM Gen III/IV application chart, not universal pressure targets. Confirm that the chart lists your exact application before considering either pump.

Melling Oil Pump, Wet Sump, Internal, Standard Volume, High Pressure, 7/8 in Inlet, GM LS-Series, Each
  • High Pressure
  • Standard Volume
  • Includes optional +25 psi high pressure spring for the COPO Camaro engines.
  • Stock Volume, 10 PSI increase in pressure over M295 oil pump.
  • Uses 7/8" diameter standard bolt on screen
Model Volume type Displacement Relief-valve specification What to consider
Melling 10295 Stock-volume, high-pressure 0.96 cubic inches per revolution 47 psi Listed as a performance option for compatible applications. Melling’s product information describes a high-pressure spring and an included optional standard-pressure spring; confirm application and current instructions.
Melling 10296 High-volume, high-pressure 1.14 cubic inches per revolution 47 psi Consider only where the application is compatible and the engine’s oil demand justifies increased volume.

How to choose a pump for your build

  1. Identify the exact engine. Confirm make, engine family, year and application, then check the pump’s current manufacturer catalog for fitment and stock-pump interchange. A model number that fits one application is not evidence of fitment to another.
  2. Establish the engine’s oil demand. Ask the engine builder whether bearing clearances, intended RPM, or additions such as a remote filter or external cooler call for increased flow. If demand has not increased, Melling advises using stock volume.
  3. Choose volume separately from pressure. Decide whether the engine needs stock or increased displacement, then verify the pressure-relief spring configuration the builder specifies. Do not treat “high pressure” as a synonym for “high volume,” or infer that a high-volume pump is automatically better for a performance build.
  4. Verify the pickup and pan as a system. Check the pickup tube and screen interface, pan depth, and screen-to-pan clearance for the specific pump and installation. Melling’s features chart specifies a minimum clearance of 3/8 to 1/2 inch; follow the selected pump and engine instructions for the build. See the Melling High Performance Oil Pump Features Chart.
  5. Read the current product instructions before assembly. Confirm the selected pump’s application, included or optional springs, and installation requirements with Melling’s product information and the engine builder. Melling says each pump is individually tested for pressure and flow under conditions intended to duplicate actual engine operating conditions; this is the manufacturer’s description, not an independent comparison of pumps. Which pump is best for an LS-style performance build?

There is no blanket answer for LS engines. In Melling’s GM Gen III/IV chart, the 10295 is the stock-volume, high-pressure example, while the 10296 adds volume but retains a 47 psi chart relief specification. Choose between them only after confirming the specific engine application and the builder’s oil-demand requirements; the chart does not establish that every LS engine needs higher volume.

  • [Engine Oil Pump]: The oil pump is the power source for oil circulation in the engine lubrication system. It circulates oil to the engine bearings, camshafts and pistons, among other components, reducing the risk of engine wear. A failed oil pump will cause low oil pressure, engine overheating, and an unusual noise coming from the engine. If you notice any of these symptoms, you need to replace your oil pump.
  • [Excellent Performance]: The oil pump compatible with 6.0 oil pump. By circulating the oil supply, it ensures that all internal parts of the engine are adequately lubricated and cooled, which reduces the risk of wear and damage and prolongs the lifespan of the engine
  • [Buy with Confidence]: A-Premium offers a one-year unlimited-mileage guarantee on our meticulously crafted oil pump. We offer a wide variety of automotive accessory categories, ensuring that you can hit the road with peace of mind
