For the U.S. 2024 model year, the best hatchback depends on what matters most: the Toyota Prius and Prius Prime lead Kelley Blue Book’s ranking, while the Honda Civic Hatchback, Toyota Corolla Hatchback, Mazda3 Hatchback, Subaru Impreza, and Volkswagen’s GTI and Golf R offer different mixes of efficiency, space, traction, and performance. Treat that ranking as a shortlist, then compare the exact trim and powertrain you would buy.
How to choose a 2024 hatchback
Start with your main use rather than a single “best” label. A hybrid or plug-in hybrid suits a buyer prioritizing efficiency; a larger cargo area can matter more for regular hauling; all-wheel drive may be a priority for some drivers; and sport-focused models trade some economy or comfort for performance. Compare like with like: body style, trim, transmission, and drivetrain can change price, fuel economy, equipment, and capability.
Kelley Blue Book says its editors drove and ranked 2024 hatchbacks using safety, driving performance, cargo room, fuel economy, value, options, technology, and other factors. Its surfaced list places the Prius and Prius Prime at No. 1, the Civic at No. 3, and the Corolla Hatchback at No. 4, and also includes the Mazda3 and Volkswagen Golf range. That is one publisher’s editorial ranking, not a universal result or a substitute for comparing the configurations available to you. Kelley Blue Book’s 2024 hatchback ranking
Best hatchbacks of 2024 by priority
Toyota Prius and Prius Prime: efficiency-first choices
Kelley Blue Book ranks both the 2024 Prius and Prius Prime first in its surfaced listing. It reports 52 mpg combined for the Prius and 127 MPGe combined for the Prius Prime. Those are figures reported on KBB’s page; confirm the EPA rating for the specific model and configuration before comparing vehicles. The Prius is a conventional hybrid, while the Prius Prime is a plug-in hybrid: the latter is most compelling for drivers who can charge regularly and want to make use of its electric driving capability. The cited ranking data alone does not establish which one will cost less to own for a particular driver. Kelley Blue Book’s 2024 hatchback ranking

Honda Civic Hatchback: a balanced compact
The Civic Hatchback gives buyers several engine and transmission combinations, so its price and EPA economy are trim-specific. In Honda’s Aug. 9, 2023 U.S. release for the 2024 model, the LX was listed at $24,950 MSRP before destination and $26,045 including the stated $1,095 destination charge. These are launch-era prices, not current used-car values. Honda’s release lists combined EPA ratings from 29 to 35 mpg across the configurations shown. For one specific example, the EX-L with the 1.5-liter turbo and CVT was listed at 31/39/35 mpg city/highway/combined; the Sport Touring with a six-speed manual was listed at 28/37/31 mpg. Honda rates the 2.0-liter engine at 158 hp and the 1.5-liter turbo at 180 hp. Check the exact trim and transmission rather than applying one Civic figure across the range. Honda’s 2024 Civic Hatchback specifications and features
Honda’s comparison reports 24.5 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the second row for the Civic Hatchback. Measurement methods can differ between manufacturers, so use care when comparing that figure directly with another brand’s cargo claim. Honda’s comparison of 2024 hatchback cargo space

Toyota Corolla Hatchback: economy and value in Toyota’s comparison
Toyota’s 2023 comparison for 2024 models lists the Corolla Hatchback at a $23,505 base MSRP, 169 hp, and up to 32/41/35 mpg city/highway/combined. Those are comparison figures, not a present-day used-car price or a promise that every trim achieves the maximum rating. The comparison also cites a 60/40 split-folding rear seat. Toyota says its comparison uses JATO data and advises consulting full specifications for more detail, so verify trim-specific equipment and ratings before deciding. Mazda3 Hatchback: more power in the cited comparison
In the same Toyota/JATO comparison, the 2024 Mazda3 Hatchback is listed at a $25,690 base MSRP and 191 hp. The listed FWD economy is 26/36/30 mpg city/highway/combined, and the comparison notes a 60/40 split-folding rear seat. The cited horsepower advantage and Corolla’s higher listed fuel-economy figures describe those compared configurations only; they do not make either car the universal winner. Verify the precise trim and drivetrain in the full specification before using the figures to compare offers. Toyota’s 2024 Corolla and Mazda3 comparison

Subaru Impreza: consider its hatchback layout and traction needs
Subaru’s brochure describes the 2024 Impreza as a flexible hatchback with a 60/40 split-folding rear seat. It claims up to 100.5 cubic feet of interior space and references competitor measurements; treat that as Subaru’s own brochure claim, not a directly interchangeable cargo-volume measurement. Honda’s comparison reports 20.4 cubic feet behind the second row for the Impreza, versus 24.5 for the Civic Hatchback, but the figures come from a manufacturer comparison and measurement methods may vary. Check the specific Impreza configuration for drivetrain and equipment that matter to you. Subaru’s 2024 Impreza brochure Honda’s comparison of 2024 hatchback cargo space
Volkswagen Golf GTI and Golf R: performance-oriented options
Kelley Blue Book’s 2024 U.S. ranking describes Volkswagen’s Golf range as the GTI and Golf R. Do not assume a regular Golf hatchback was part of the U.S. lineup for this model year based on the ranking. The KBB listing supports considering the GTI and R as sport-focused choices, but it does not provide a trim-by-trim comparison here; check the exact car’s specifications and equipment before weighing it against the other models. What to compare before buying
- Price and condition: Treat advertised 2024 launch MSRPs as historical context. They do not tell you what a used 2024 hatchback costs today; compare actual local listings, mileage, condition, and trim.
- Fuel economy: Match EPA figures to the exact trim, engine, and transmission. A range spanning multiple Civic configurations, for example, is not one rating for every Civic Hatchback.
- Space: Compare rear-seat room and cargo with the seats up and folded, and check how each manufacturer measures volume. Cargo figures can be useful without being directly comparable.
- Traction and powertrain: Decide whether hybrid operation, plug-in charging, or a specific drivetrain matters for your routes and climate. Confirm availability on the precise configuration rather than relying on a model name.
- Safety and technology: Compare actual features by trim, including driver-assistance systems, rather than assuming every model includes the same equipment. Honda cautions that adaptive cruise control may not detect all objects and does not replace driver responsibility. Honda’s 2024 hatchback comparison
- Ownership questions: A publisher ranking or specification sheet does not establish reliability, resale value, repair costs, or the best choice for your circumstances. Check vehicle history, open recalls, and the features and condition of the individual car.
