Best Garmin Dash Cam: 57 vs. 67W vs. Mini 2 vs. Tandem

The Garmin 67W is the best all-round pick for broad forward coverage; the 57 is the value alternative, the Mini 2 is the discreet option, and the Tandem records the cabin.

Best overall: Garmin Dash Cam 67W, for its 1440p recording and 180-degree forward view. Choose the 57 if you want similar core features with a narrower 140-degree view; the Mini 2 if a discreet, tiny camera matters most; or the Tandem if you need to record the cabin as well as the road ahead. The 57 and 67W are the closest alternatives—the Mini 2 and Tandem solve different problems.

Garmin Dash Cam 57 vs. 67W: the main choice

Both cameras record at up to 1440p and include GPS, a 2-inch display, voice control, Wi-Fi, Garmin Drive app support, incident detection, HDR, Parking Guard support and driver-alert features. Garmin describes the 67W as sharing the 57’s core feature set but using a wider lens. The key difference is field of view: 140 degrees on the 57 and 180 degrees on the 67W. See Garmin’s Dash Cam 57 specifications and Dash Cam 67W specifications.

What the 67W’s wider lens changes

The 67W can show more of the scene to either side, which may help capture cross traffic or context at intersections. A 180-degree view is not rear coverage, however, and does not replace a camera aimed through the back window. Wider lenses can also make distant objects look smaller and may create more distortion near the edges. That is a practical optical trade-off, not a Garmin-published comparative test result.

When the 57 makes more sense

The 57 offers the same stated 1440p recording class and main feature set in a narrower view. If you do not need the extra side coverage, it is the value alternative—particularly when its current price is meaningfully lower. Its 140-degree view may concentrate the image over a narrower scene and appear less extreme, but Garmin does not publish a controlled image-quality comparison between the two.

Is 1440p worth choosing over the Mini 2’s 1080p?

The 57 and 67W offer a 2560 × 1440 recording mode; the Mini 2 records at 1920 × 1080. Higher resolution can retain more spatial detail for signs and plates, but it cannot guarantee that a plate will be readable. Lighting, motion, focus, distance, windshield cleanliness, compression and mounting position all affect the recorded result. The 67W’s wider field of view also spreads its image across more of the scene, so resolution and coverage are separate advantages.

The 57 and 67W also support 1080p at 60 frames per second, while 1440p is available at 30 fps with HDR. In broad terms, 1080p/60 prioritizes smoother motion; 1440p/30 prioritizes spatial detail. Neither setting is automatically better in every driving condition. Garmin lists these recording modes in its 47/57/67W owner’s manual.

When to choose the Mini 2

The Mini 2 is the choice when a small, low-profile camera matters more than the 57 and 67W’s extra features. It records 1080p with a 140-degree view, has no display or GPS, and does not include the driver-alert features listed for the 57 and 67W. Garmin says the Mini 2 records date and time but is not GPS-enabled; the 57, 67W and Tandem can include date, time, speed and location. The Mini 2 does offer voice control and Wi-Fi/app connectivity. See Garmin’s connected dash-cam feature announcement.

That makes the Mini 2 a reasonable fit for a vehicle with little windshield space, a temporary installation or a driver who wants less visible hardware. Its tiny body means footage review and location verification rely more on a phone and the video file; it is a poor fit if GPS metadata, an onboard screen, 1440p or driver alerts are priorities.

Where the Tandem fits—and what it does not do

The Tandem records both the road ahead and the cabin: it has two 180-degree lenses, one facing forward and one aimed inside. It is the specialist option for rideshare, taxi, fleet or personal-security use where an interior record matters. It is not a conventional front-and-rear dash-cam kit: the interior lens does not provide rear-window road coverage. Garmin’s dash-cam series page and model comparison describe the product differences.

Recording passengers raises privacy and consent questions that vary by jurisdiction. Garmin warns that some places regulate or prohibit dash-camera use and that owners are responsible for complying with local rules. Check the requirements that apply where you drive before recording a cabin.

Parking Guard: power is the deciding factor

Parking Guard is not simply a setting that makes a camera watch indefinitely after you turn off the engine. The camera needs an always-on power source and suitable connectivity for app-based features. Garmin documents its Constant Power Cable, which connects through the vehicle’s OBD-II port, and a microUSB Parking Mode Cable for compatible older models including the Mini 2, 57 and 67W. Follow Garmin’s Parking Guard power and installation guidance rather than improvising a hardwire connection.

Garmin Dash Cam™ X110, Compact 1080p HD Dash Cam
  • Easy-to-use premium dash camera records crisp 1440p HD video, and a wide 140-degree field of view captures details in bright and low light; automatically saves video of detected incidents (some jurisdictions prohibit use of this camera device)
  • Easy-to-view 2.4” LCD display for immediate playback
  • Built-in Garmin Clarity polarizer lens enhancement reduces windshield glare to clearly show important video details
  • Save time, and avoid downloading or editing large video files with the online Vault, which automatically stores important saved video clips so you can view and share with the Garmin Drive smartphone app; you can even access high-end features, such as dash cam live view (requires a paid Vault subscription and active Wi-Fi network connection; nonpaid users can only view and download files when near the dash cam)
  • Voice control lets you use spoken commands to save video, start/stop audio recording and more (available in English, German, French, Spanish, Italian and Swedish)

An always-on camera can draw from the vehicle battery. An OBD-II port may also be occupied, inaccessible or unsuitable for a particular vehicle. Garmin’s Mini 2 manual advises checking vehicle warranty provisions and disconnecting the accessory if it affects engine operation. Test your intended setup before relying on monitoring overnight.

Connected features, Vault and local recording

Wi-Fi links the camera with Garmin’s Drive app for setup, viewing and management. Parking Guard and Live View have additional power and connection requirements. Garmin Vault is online video storage, separate from ordinary local microSD recording: you do not need a Vault subscription just to record to a card. Garmin’s older launch announcement described saved clips being stored automatically for 24 hours with options for up to 30 days, but those limits should not be treated as confirmed current U.S. plan terms. Check Garmin Vault’s current plan page and Garmin’s Vault pricing support page for current price and included storage before subscribing.

Which Garmin dash cam should you buy?

  • Daily commuter who wants broad context: Choose the 67W if extra side coverage is useful and the price premium over the 57 is modest.
  • Driver who wants 1440p, GPS and a screen without the widest view: Choose the 57, especially if it costs less than the 67W.
  • City driver concerned about cross traffic: The 67W’s 180-degree view may capture more side context at intersections; it remains a front camera, not a substitute for rear coverage.
  • Rideshare or taxi driver: Consider the Tandem if interior footage is necessary, after checking local recording rules and current stock, warranty and return terms.
  • Rental-car user or driver who dislikes visible devices: The Mini 2’s tiny form is the strongest fit if 1080p, no GPS, no screen and no driver alerts are acceptable.
  • Driver who needs front-and-rear road footage: Do not buy the Tandem on the assumption that its cabin lens sees through the rear window. A compatible rear camera or a two-camera setup is the relevant alternative. Garmin markets Dash Cam Video Sync for compatible multi-camera footage; check current supported combinations and app limitations before choosing a setup: Garmin’s camera comparison and support information.
  • Driver who parks outdoors overnight: Choose based on the camera’s coverage, then confirm an appropriate always-on power accessory and connectivity arrangement will work in your vehicle.

Installation and ownership checklist

  1. Choose a reliable card. The 47/57/67W manual specifies microSDHC or microSDXC, Class 10 or higher, FAT32 and at least 8 GB. For repeated recording, a high-endurance card is a sensible choice; check Garmin’s current card guidance for compatible options.
  2. Mount for a clear, legal view. Position the camera near the rear-view mirror without blocking the driver’s visibility, and keep the lens level.
  3. Set it up and check the basics. Use Garmin Drive for setup and management, then verify the date and time, GPS where present, and audio settings.
  4. Review actual footage. Check daytime and nighttime video from your normal driving position rather than assuming resolution or field of view guarantees useful evidence.
  5. Test parking operation. Confirm power, Wi-Fi and app-based features behave as intended before relying on them while the vehicle is unattended.
  6. Check older-stock details. These models date from Garmin’s 2021-era connected lineup. Before buying old stock or a used unit, confirm the exact model number, warranty, return policy, firmware support, included accessories and condition of any included card.

Price and availability: verify before buying

These are older models, and Garmin’s retrieved product pages do not establish a reliable current U.S. selling price or confirmed in-stock status for every camera. Garmin’s 2021 launch announcement gave a suggested retail range of $129.99–$259.99 across the series; that is historical launch pricing, not a 2026 quote. Check the seller’s current price and stock for the exact model rather than using launch MSRP to decide whether the 67W premium is worthwhile. Garmin’s original announcement is here.

Driver alerts on the 57 and 67W, including forward-collision and lane-departure alerts, are assistance features—not a substitute for attentive driving or a guarantee of warning in every situation. Conditions can affect their operation, and regional availability varies for some warnings.
