The shortlist below compares six compact-SUV candidates with published ratings, then puts those label figures beside a separate real-world test. It is not a definitive top ten: the available figures do not verify ten current compact models on a consistent basis.
Which compact SUVs have the best stated fuel economy?
The figures below are EPA combined ratings reported in Car and Driver’s 2026 SUV and compact-hybrid guides. Ranges reflect different configurations; they are not a promise that every trim earns the same rating.
| 2026 model | Reported combined fuel economy | Configuration note |
|---|---|---|
| Toyota RAV4 Hybrid | 38–43 mpg | The compact-hybrid guide lists the LE FWD at 43 mpg combined. Car and Driver’s broader SUV guide reports the range; its compact-hybrid guide identifies the LE FWD figure. |
| Kia Sportage Hybrid | 35–42 mpg | Range reported in Car and Driver’s 2026 broad SUV guide; exact result depends on configuration. Source. |
| Honda CR-V Hybrid | 35–40 mpg | Range reported in Car and Driver’s 2026 broad SUV guide. Source. |
| Ford Escape Hybrid | 40 mpg | Combined figure reported in Car and Driver’s 2026 broad SUV guide. Source. |
| Hyundai Tucson Hybrid | 35–38 mpg | Range reported in Car and Driver’s 2026 compact-hybrid guide. Source. |
| Mazda CX-50 Hybrid | 38 mpg | Combined figure reported in Car and Driver’s 2026 guides. Broad SUV guide; compact-hybrid guide. |
These are a useful shortlist, not a verified ranked top ten. Car and Driver’s general mileage list covers multiple SUV sizes, while its compact-hybrid guide focuses on hybrids and uses editorial evaluations. The Corolla Cross Hybrid appears at 42 mpg combined in the broad list, but that guide classifies it as a subcompact, so it is not included here as a compact SUV.
What did one real-world comparison find?
In Cars.com’s May 4, 2026 comparison, the Toyota RAV4 LE averaged 39.0 mpg and the Honda CR-V Sport Touring Hybrid averaged 34.4 mpg. Those are test results, not EPA label ratings.

Eight drivers rotated among eight vehicles on a roughly 220-mile route beginning in Santa Clarita, California. The route avoided Los Angeles traffic, included elevation changes and windy conditions, and averaged about 50–55 mph. Cars.com averaged trip-computer readings with pump-calculated fuel economy (miles driven divided by gallons used). Its full results were:
| Vehicle in Cars.com test | Average on the route |
|---|---|
| 2026 Toyota RAV4 LE | 39.0 mpg |
| 2026 Honda CR-V Sport Touring Hybrid | 34.4 mpg |
| 2026 Jeep Cherokee Limited | 34.2 mpg |
| 2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid SX-Prestige | 33.7 mpg |
| 2026 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid Limited | 32.7 mpg |
| 2026.5 Nissan Rogue Rock Creek | 31.6 mpg |
| 2026 Volkswagen Tiguan SEL R-Line Turbo | 30.9 mpg |
| 2025 Ford Bronco Sport Big Bend | 29.3 mpg |
All five hybrids in that specific group occupied its top five places. The route, vehicle selection, and conditions make this a useful comparison, but not a prediction for every owner or a substitute for an EPA label. Cars.com’s full test report gives the method and results.

How to compare the exact SUV you might buy
- Match the model year, trim, and drivetrain. A model-level range can span configurations with different ratings. Check whether the vehicle is front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive and compare the trim you intend to purchase.
- Compare city, highway, and combined MPG. Combined MPG is a useful quick comparison, but your driving mix affects which rating is most relevant. Verify the label for the exact configuration rather than assuming a model’s best figure applies across its lineup.
- Use the EPA comparison resource. The EPA directs shoppers to fueleconomy.gov to find and compare vehicles. Compare the exact version and use the same assumptions when estimating fuel costs; an annual estimate depends on mileage and fuel prices.
- Balance fuel use against your needs. Compare purchase price, passenger and cargo space, and equipment alongside MPG. If considering a plug-in hybrid, include whether you can charge it regularly: its fuel use depends in part on how it is operated and charged.
What should used-SUV shoppers check?
The EPA’s fuel-economy label guidance says its used-vehicle search accepts model year, make, model, engine, and transmission. For a properly maintained vehicle, the agency says the original EPA fuel-economy estimate remains the best indicator of average gas mileage over a typical 15-year life. Actual results still depend on the vehicle’s condition and how it is driven. Read the EPA’s label guidance.
