The analysis found 6.4 complaints per 10,000 sold for 2011 and 7.9 for 2006. Those figures help narrow a search; they are not a guarantee about any individual car. For 2012–2016 Focuses, identify the transmission carefully: Ford documented clutch-shudder and transmission-control-module concerns involving certain cars equipped with the DPS6 automatic.
Which Ford Focus years look best for reliability?
In Milemark’s 2026 comparison of U.S. NHTSA complaints and manufacturer-reported sales for 2005–2018 Focuses, 2011 had the lowest reported complaint rate, at 6.4 per 10,000 sold. The 2006 model was next at 7.9 per 10,000 sold. These are reported complaints—not confirmed mechanical failures, an official NHTSA reliability score, or a forecast for a particular vehicle. The rates are from the comparison’s U.S. 2005–2018 dataset; they do not distinguish every trim, transmission configuration, mileage level, or maintenance history. The markedly higher 2012–2018 aggregate was driven in part by shifting complaints, but complaint counts alone cannot identify the cause or establish that every car has the same problem.
Why the DPS6 automatic deserves special scrutiny
Ford issued separate customer satisfaction programs for certain Focuses fitted with the DPS6 automatic. They are specific to eligible vehicles, not proof that every Focus in the stated years is affected. A manual-transmission car is not included in Ford’s TCM program described below.

TCM symptoms and the 14M02 program
Ford’s August 2019 supplement to Customer Satisfaction Program 14M02 covered certain 2012–2016 Focus vehicles equipped with the DPS6 automatic. Ford described possible intermittent loss of transmission engagement, a no-start condition, or lack of power, often with a check-engine light, associated with electrical circuit failures within the transmission control module (TCM). The document stated TCM coverage of 10 years or 150,000 miles from the warranty start date, whichever came first, for eligible vehicles. Those were dated, time- and mileage-limited terms; they do not show that a particular car is currently covered. Ford’s 14M02 Supplement 4
Clutch judder and the 19N08 program
Ford’s August 2019 Customer Satisfaction Program 19N08 applied to certain 2014–2016 Focus vehicles with the DPS6 automatic. It described intermittent clutch judder or shudder during light acceleration from a stop or during shifts. The stated extension was a one-time seven years or 100,000 miles from the warranty start date, whichever came first. Because the program had specific eligibility and time/mileage limits, ask Ford to check the car’s VIN and program history rather than assuming the extension remains available. A Ford technical bulletin from 2016 also addresses DPS6 clutch shudder and possible fluid leakage in certain 2012–2016 Focus automatics. It says the specified service procedures are for trained technicians and should not be performed by do-it-yourselfers. Ford’s 2016 technical bulletin
How to evaluate a specific Focus before buying
A favorable model-year rate is only a screening tool. Compare the actual cars on transmission, repair documentation, recall status, condition, and history rather than choosing by year alone.

- Identify the transmission. Confirm the configuration from the vehicle’s documentation or have a qualified mechanic verify it. If it has the DPS6 automatic, ask specifically about shudder, slipping, loss of engagement, no-starts, and prior clutch or TCM repairs.
- Ask for service invoices and repair history. Look for documented transmission work and evidence that any applicable campaign or repair was completed. A seller’s verbal assurance is not a substitute for records.
- Check recalls by VIN. Use NHTSA’s official recall lookup to check for open recalls on the exact car. An AP report in December 2024 described earlier recalls involving around 1.5 million 2012–2018 Focus sedans related to a purge-valve/software issue that could deform the fuel tank and cause loss of power. That history does not tell you whether a particular vehicle has completed required work; the VIN lookup is the relevant check. Associated Press, December 2024
- Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. Ask the inspector to assess operation, maintenance, signs of damage or leaks, and any transmission concerns. A model-wide complaint comparison cannot reveal hidden damage or poor maintenance on the car in front of you.
- Compare the whole vehicle. Consider mileage, rust, title status, condition, maintenance, and local availability alongside model year and complaint-rate context.
How to use the year ranking
If two Focuses are otherwise comparable, 2011 or 2006 is a reasonable place to start based on this complaint-rate comparison. The evidence does not establish that either year will outperform every newer or older example; nor does it rank individual trims or powertrains. For a 2012–2018 car, the higher aggregate complaint rate supports extra scrutiny, especially when the vehicle has a DPS6 automatic, but the decision still turns on that car’s inspection, documentation, and recall status.
