2017 is a reasonable Ford Flex model year to shortlist based on one analysis of owner complaints, but no source reviewed establishes a single, definitive “most reliable” year. ForCar’s NHTSA-complaint analysis gives 2017 its lowest complaint rate per estimated production run; other sources measure reliability differently and point to different years. Treat year-level data as a screening tool, then judge the specific Flex by its records, condition, mileage and VIN-specific recall status.
Which Ford Flex years look best for reliability?
The most defensible answer is to put the 2017 Flex on a shortlist—not to call it a proven winner. ForCar’s analysis of NHTSA complaint records reports 1.24 complaints per production run for 2017, the lowest figure among the model years in its displayed series. That is a result of one source’s method, not an official failure rate or a prediction about any individual vehicle.
Other evidence does not produce a consistent year ranking. CarComplaints.com shows 2013 with the most raw complaint reports on its model-year comparison, but names 2010 as its worst year after considering other factors. Consumer Reports’ search summary says the 2019 Flex is more reliable than other vehicles from the 2019 model year. These findings use different measures, so they should not be combined into a single ranking.
What the year-by-year evidence measures
ForCar: complaints adjusted by production-run count
ForCar says it analyzes NHTSA complaints for Flex model years 2009–2019. It groups reports by the first 11 VIN characters, which it calls production runs, then divides complaint counts by the number of runs. Its page, updated September 2026, reports 42 complaints across 34 runs for 2017, or 1.24 per run. For comparison, it reports 531 complaints across 75 runs for 2013, or 7.08 per run; 60 across 33 for 2012, or 1.82; 234 across 70 for 2014, or 3.34; and 240 across 60 for 2019, or 4.00. The adjustment is an exposure proxy, not a measured number of vehicles on the road or a controlled reliability test. Complaint submissions are not verified failures, and a complaint-per-run ratio is not the percentage of Flexes that will need a repair. ForCar also cautions that newer model years have had less time to accumulate complaints.
CarComplaints.com: raw complaints and its own worst-year designation
CarComplaints.com’s comparison shows 2013 with the highest raw complaint total, while its site methodology identifies 2010 as the worst year after considering factors such as repair cost and mileage. The site highlights reports of engine failure and internal water-pump coolant leakage for 2010, and door-ajar warning problems among 2013 reports. Consumer Reports: survey-based comparison
Consumer Reports describes its reliability history as based on subscriber surveys. Its search-result summary says the 2019 Flex is more reliable than other vehicles from the 2019 model year and reports four recalls for that vehicle. The underlying reliability page was not available to inspect, so no exact score or trouble-spot details can be established from that summary. Complaint totals favor no simple interpretation: older vehicles have had more time to generate reports, while raw counts do not account for how many vehicles were built. Normalizing by production runs changes the comparison but still does not establish a true defect rate. Survey-based comparisons answer yet another question: how owners report reliability relative to vehicles from the same model year.

What to check before buying a used Ford Flex
Year-level rankings cannot establish the condition of the vehicle you are considering. Use them to decide where to look closely, then assess that Flex on its own evidence:
- Review maintenance records. Look for a consistent service history and investigate gaps, repeated repairs or unresolved warning lights.
- Match mileage to condition. Mileage alone does not establish reliability; compare the wear and documented upkeep with the vehicle’s age and use.
- Arrange an independent inspection. Ask the inspector to assess the specific vehicle and investigate concerns suggested by its history, rather than assuming a reported problem affects every car of that year.
- Check recall status by VIN. A published recall count for a model year is not confirmation that a particular Flex has an open, incomplete or applicable recall.
- Compare the actual cars available. A well-documented example with sound condition may be a better choice than a nominally favored year with an uncertain history.
Does a particular engine, trim or drivetrain make the Flex more reliable?
The available year-level evidence does not provide a controlled comparison by engine, trim or drivetrain. The Flex was offered with naturally aspirated and twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 options, and configuration availability varied during its 2009–2019 run, but these sources do not establish a reliability winner among them. The same limitation applies to fuel economy: the complaint and survey summaries discussed here do not establish an MPG winner. Reliability, fuel use and configuration should be evaluated separately using evidence suited to each question.

The Ford Flex spans model years 2009–2019 and is described in the model-history overview as a single-generation vehicle, with a mid-cycle refresh in 2013. Consumer Reports’ overview search result also calls 2013 a redesign year.
