Before buying, match two things in the owner’s manual: the SAE viscosity (such as 0W-16, 0W-20, 5W-20, or 5W-30) and the required performance or manufacturer approval (such as API, ILSAC, dexos, Ford, Chrysler, ACEA, or another named specification).
As a broad, conditional recommendation, Mobil 1 Extended Performance 0W-20 Full Synthetic Motor Oil, 5 Quart is a strong choice for a 2022 vehicle that specifically calls for SAE 0W-20 and accepts the product’s listed API, ILSAC, or applicable OEM requirements. It is not a universal substitute for 0W-16, 5W-30, diesel oil, European-engine oil, or any other grade or approval listed in your manual.
Why there is no single “best oil” for every 2022 vehicle
“2022” identifies the model year, not the engine design. A 2022 Toyota, Ford, Chevrolet, Honda, BMW, diesel pickup, hybrid, and turbocharged crossover may all require different oil grades and approvals. Requirements can also differ between engines sold under the same model name.

Ford directs owners to the maintenance section of the owner’s manual because the required oil grade, filter, capacity, and service interval vary by vehicle and engine. Chevrolet gives similar guidance and identifies dexos1 as the relevant gasoline-engine specification for applicable GM vehicles. The safest buying rule is therefore:
- Find the exact SAE viscosity in the owner’s manual.
- Match the required API, ILSAC, dexos, Ford, ACEA, or other manufacturer approval on the container.
- Confirm the oil capacity, filter, and change interval separately.
Brand matters after those requirements have been satisfied. A premium oil in the wrong viscosity or without the required approval is not the right oil.

Best broad recommendation for 0W-20 applications
Mobil 1 Extended Performance 0W-20 Full Synthetic Motor Oil, 5 Quart
This is the strongest broad recommendation in this guide for vehicles whose manuals specify SAE 0W-20. Mobil lists the product with API SP and ILSAC GF-6A/GF-7A compatibility and provides manufacturer information covering applicable vehicle requirements across its viscosity range.
Compatibility warning: Check your manual before purchasing. The oil must match the required SAE grade, API or ILSAC category, and any named OEM approval. A five-quart jug also may not equal your engine’s actual refill quantity.
Do not use this recommendation as permission to replace a required 0W-16, 5W-30, 0W-40, diesel specification, European approval, or other specialized oil requirement. Mobil’s own product information instructs consumers to check the owner’s manual for viscosity, API classification, and builder approval; that vehicle-specific check is more important than the brand name.
Common 2022 oil requirements compared
| Vehicle or application example | Requirement shown in the research | What it means when shopping |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid | ILSAC GF-6B SAE 0W-16 | Use 0W-16. Toyota permits 0W-20 only as a temporary substitute when 0W-16 is unavailable, with replacement by 0W-16 at the next oil change. |
| 2022 Toyota Corolla | Requirements vary by engine; examples include 0W-20 for the 2ZR-FAE and 0W-16 for the M20A-FKS | Identify the engine before buying. The 2022 Corolla maintenance guidance also distinguishes service treatment when a substitute oil is used. |
| Applicable 2022 Chevrolet or other GM gasoline vehicle | Correct SAE grade from the manual plus dexos1 full synthetic where specified | Look for the required dexos1 designation, not merely a general “full synthetic” label. ACDelco dexos1 Gen 3 is GM’s current passenger-car engine-oil specification and is described as backward-compatible with earlier dexos1, ILSAC GF-6, and API SP oils. |
| 2021–2024 Ford Bronco Sport 2.0L EcoBoost example | SAE 5W-30 | This illustrates why 0W-20 cannot be generalized to every 2022 vehicle. Follow the exact Ford engine recommendation. |
| Diesel or European-engine application | May require a diesel-specific, ACEA, or named manufacturer approval | Do not substitute a generic passenger-car 0W-20 merely because its API or ILSAC category looks current. |
These are examples, not a fitment chart. Trim, engine, fuel type, transmission, market, and production configuration can change the required oil. Use the manual or the manufacturer’s vehicle-specific lookup for the final answer.
How to read the oil container
SAE viscosity: the numbers and “W”
A label such as 0W-20 describes the oil’s viscosity behavior at low and operating temperatures. The “W” refers to winter performance; the second number describes the oil’s higher-temperature viscosity classification.
Rank #2
- Advanced protection against the four main causes of engine breakdown: wear friction heat and deposits
- Delivers 40% stronger wear protection than industry standards to reduce friction and improve fuel economy
- Provides 15% better deposit defense vs. industry standards, keeping engines cleaner for smoother performance and longer-lasting protection
- Up to 2.5X better heat protection vs. industry standards to fight harmful sludge formation and thermal breakdown
- Engineered for excellent low-temperature flow, reducing metal-to-metal contact during cold starts — when most engine wear typically occurs
Common grades on 2022 passenger vehicles include 0W-16, 0W-20, 5W-20, and 5W-30, but frequency is not permission to substitute one for another. A thinner grade can be required for fuel economy and engine design, while another engine may need a different high-temperature viscosity or a manufacturer-specific formulation.
API and ILSAC categories
API’s guidance says owners should consult the owner’s manual before using its category charts. Current gasoline-engine categories are designed to address concerns such as low-speed pre-ignition, timing-chain wear, deposits, sludge, fuel economy, and emissions-system protection. Newer categories can cover some earlier performance requirements, but an OEM’s named approval still controls when the manufacturer requires one.
Look for the applicable API mark, ILSAC designation, or manufacturer approval on the container. “Full synthetic” describes the base-oil formulation; it does not, by itself, prove that the oil meets your engine’s required specification.
Specification-specific alternatives
For applicable GM vehicles: ACDelco dexos1 Gen 3
ACDelco dexos1 Gen 3 Full Synthetic 0W-20 Motor Oil is a sensible GM-specific option when the vehicle requires SAE 0W-20 and dexos1. It belongs in the GM-specific category, not in a universal recommendation. Confirm both the viscosity and dexos requirement in the manual.
For Toyota vehicles requiring 0W-20: Genuine Toyota oil
Genuine Toyota 0W-20 Motor Oil is a reasonable OEM-branded choice for a Toyota whose manual specifies 0W-20. Toyota also sells and recommends checking the owner’s manual for the correct viscosity. Do not assume it fits every 2022 Toyota: the Highlander Hybrid example requires 0W-16, and the 2022 Corolla’s requirement varies by engine.

For 0W-16 vehicles
Use a quality 0W-16 product carrying the exact API, ILSAC, or OEM requirement listed in the manual. The Mobil 1 0W-20 recommendation above is not a permanent replacement for a vehicle designed for 0W-16. Toyota’s Highlander Hybrid guidance is explicit that 0W-20 is only a temporary substitute when 0W-16 is unavailable and should be replaced at the next oil change.
For 5W-20 or 5W-30 vehicles
Choose a full-synthetic product in the required grade with the required approval. The Ford Bronco Sport 2.0L EcoBoost example demonstrates that a 2022 vehicle may call for 5W-30, even though 0W-20 is common elsewhere. Follow Ford’s exact specification rather than relying on model-year averages.

Should you use full synthetic oil?
For many 2022 vehicles, full synthetic oil is the practical default because it is widely specified or recommended, performs consistently across temperature ranges, and is available in the required modern categories. But the decisive test is still the manual’s specification.
Full synthetic does not automatically authorize longer drain intervals. Use the vehicle’s maintenance schedule, oil-life monitor instructions, driving conditions, warranty requirements, and any special severe-service guidance. Do not extend the interval merely because the bottle says “extended performance.” Any mileage or protection guarantee made by an oil manufacturer is that manufacturer’s claim, not independent proof that every engine can safely exceed its prescribed interval.

Usually, a high-mileage full synthetic is worth considering only when the vehicle has substantial mileage or shows issues such as minor seal seepage. It may contain additive chemistry intended for older engines, but “high mileage” does not override the required viscosity or OEM approval.
For example, if the manual requires 0W-20 with a particular manufacturer approval, select a high-mileage 0W-20 product that also satisfies that approval. Do not move to a thicker 5W-30 simply because the vehicle has accumulated miles unless the manufacturer or a qualified technician supports that change.
Oil capacity and the filter matter as much as the oil
Buying a five-quart container does not mean your engine takes five quarts. Some engines require less, while others require more. The specified capacity may also differ depending on whether the filter is replaced.

- Designed for vehicles with 75,000 miles or more, Valvoline MaxLife Full Synthetic High Mileage Motor Oil helps maximize engine life and performance for the many miles still ahead
- Formulated with seal conditioners to help prevent oil leaks, reduce oil consumption, and improve fuel economy
- Delivers 50% stronger wear protection than industry standards for superior defense against friction and wear
- Provides 20% stronger sludge defense than industry standards to protect against harmful buildup and deposits
- Offers 2.5X better heat protection than industry standards to safeguard engines in extreme conditions
Before starting the job, verify:
- Engine oil capacity with a filter change
- Required oil filter part number or vehicle-specific fitment
- Whether the capacity is listed in U.S. quarts, liters, or another unit
- Recommended drain interval and oil-life-monitor procedure
- Whether the manual specifies a break-in, severe-service, towing, short-trip, or extreme-temperature schedule
After refilling, run the engine briefly, switch it off, wait according to the manual, and check the dipstick or electronic oil-level display on level ground. Add oil gradually rather than pouring the entire container in at once. Overfilling can be harmful.

A practical buying checklist
- Identify the vehicle: year, make, model, engine, fuel type, trim, and market.
- Open the correct manual section: look under maintenance, engine oil, fluids, or capacities.
- Write down the exact SAE grade: for example, 0W-16, 0W-20, 5W-20, or 5W-30.
- Write down every required approval: API, ILSAC, dexos, Ford, ACEA, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, VW, Chrysler, or another named standard.
- Check the front and back label: confirm the grade and approval are actually printed, not merely implied by marketing language.
- Buy enough oil: compare the engine’s filter-change capacity with the container size.
- Choose the correct filter: use the manual, manufacturer catalog, or a verified vehicle-fitment tool.
- Follow the interval: do not assume synthetic oil permits an extended drain schedule.
Bottom line: which oil should you buy?
If your 2022 vehicle’s manual calls for SAE 0W-20 and accepts the listed API, ILSAC, or applicable OEM requirements, Mobil 1 Extended Performance 0W-20 Full Synthetic Motor Oil, 5 Quart is a strong general-purpose choice.
If you own an applicable GM vehicle, consider ACDelco dexos1 Gen 3 0W-20 when the manual requires dexos1. If you own a Toyota that specifically calls for 0W-20, Genuine Toyota 0W-20 Motor Oil is a sensible OEM-branded alternative. For every other 2022 vehicle, start with the exact manual requirement rather than the model year or a popular internet recommendation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use 0W-20 in every 2022 car?
No. Some 2022 vehicles require 0W-16, 5W-20, 5W-30, 0W-40, diesel oil, or a European manufacturer approval. Use 0W-20 only when the exact engine’s manual allows it.
Is API SP oil suitable for a 2022 vehicle?
It may be, but API category compatibility is only one part of the decision. Confirm the SAE viscosity and any named OEM approval, such as dexos1, Ford, ACEA, or another requirement in the manual.

Does a 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid use 0W-20?
The cited 2022 Highlander Hybrid manual specifies ILSAC GF-6B SAE 0W-16. It permits 0W-20 only as a temporary substitute when 0W-16 is unavailable, followed by replacement with 0W-16 at the next oil change.
Does full synthetic oil allow longer oil-change intervals?
Not automatically. Follow the vehicle’s maintenance schedule, oil-life monitor, severe-service guidance, and warranty requirements. The oil manufacturer’s extended-performance claims should not be treated as universal permission to exceed the vehicle maker’s interval.
Do I need a five-quart jug for an oil change?
Not necessarily. Engine capacity varies, and the required amount may change when the filter is replaced. Check the manual and verify the level after refilling instead of assuming the container size equals the engine’s capacity.
The Bottom Line
Choose the specification first and the brand second. For a 2022 vehicle that specifically requires 0W-20 and accepts the listed approvals, Mobil 1 Extended Performance 0W-20 is a strong broad choice. Otherwise, follow the exact SAE grade, performance category, OEM approval, capacity, filter, and interval in your vehicle’s manual.
