Best Electric SUVs and Crossovers for 2026

The best electric SUV depends on your budget, charging access, passenger needs and driving routes. Here are the strongest 2026 choices by use case.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is the best all-around electric SUV or crossover for many U.S. buyers because it combines a roomy five-seat cabin, competitive range, available all-wheel drive, and exceptionally quick DC charging. It is not the right answer for everyone, though. Choose the Chevrolet Equinox EV for mainstream value, the Tesla Model Y for charging-network and software convenience, the Kia EV9 for a usable third row, the Rivian R1S for adventure and towing, or the BMW iX for luxury refinement.

The best choice depends less on a ranking than on four practical questions: how much you can spend after options and fees, whether you can charge at home, how far you drive between charging opportunities, and how many people and how much cargo you need to carry.

Quick answers

Best for Recommended model What stands out Main drawback
Best overall Hyundai Ioniq 5 Roomy cabin, distinctive design and very fast charging Five seats only; range and price vary sharply by drivetrain and wheels
Best mainstream value Chevrolet Equinox EV Practical crossover packaging and multiple configurations Trim-specific pricing and equipment require careful comparison
Best charging-network convenience Tesla Model Y Integrated route planning and broad Supercharger consideration Interface, service, insurance and changing prices will not suit every buyer
Best three-row family SUV Kia EV9 Genuinely useful third row and 800-volt charging Higher trims become expensive and the base battery has modest range
Best luxury SUV BMW iX Quiet ride, high-quality cabin and strong performance High purchase, option, insurance and repair costs
Best adventure SUV Rivian R1S All-wheel-drive capability, ground clearance and towing potential Expensive, with less universal service coverage

These are use-case recommendations, not universal test results. Edmunds, Car and Driver and Consumer Reports use different scoring, testing and reliability evidence, so their winners can differ.

How to choose an electric SUV

Compare the exact trim, not just the model name. Battery size, drivetrain, wheel diameter, heat-pump availability, charging hardware, seating and driver-assistance equipment can all change with the trim.

  • Price: compare the transaction price after destination, required packages, dealer fees, financing and verified incentives.
  • Range: use the EPA figure for the exact configuration, but allow a margin for highway driving, cold weather, battery age and charging stops.
  • Charging: consider the charging curve, battery preconditioning, connector compatibility and the chargers on your actual routes—not just the advertised peak kilowatt figure.
  • Space: check rear-seat comfort, cargo behind each row, child-seat access, frunk storage and roof or hitch capacity.
  • Ownership: obtain an insurance quote, locate service centers and review warranty, recall and software-update information.

Best overall: Hyundai Ioniq 5

The 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 5 is the strongest default recommendation for buyers who want a comfortable, distinctive five-seat crossover without moving into luxury pricing. Its tall body creates a spacious cabin, the rear seat is useful for adults, and its available all-wheel drive adds traction without turning it into an off-road SUV.

Hyundai lists EPA-estimated range from 245 miles for the standard-range rear-wheel-drive model to 318 miles for several long-range rear-wheel-drive configurations. Exact range changes with battery, drivetrain, trim and wheels. Hyundai also advertises approximately 20 minutes from 10% to 80% on a suitable 350-kW DC fast charger. That is a manufacturer estimate under favorable conditions, not a guaranteed stop time; battery temperature, state of charge, charger output and vehicle configuration matter.

The Ioniq 5 is especially appealing to road-trippers who value a short charging stop. Its limitations are equally important: it is not a three-row vehicle, rear visibility and exterior proportions may not suit every driver, and an AWD or large-wheel version can cost more while traveling fewer miles per charge. Confirm whether the particular vehicle has native NACS hardware or requires an adapter, because connector equipment varies by model year and configuration.

Best value-oriented choice: Chevrolet Equinox EV

The Chevrolet Equinox EV is one of the most important alternatives for shoppers replacing a compact or midsize gasoline crossover. It offers mainstream packaging, a comfortable five-seat layout and multiple trim and drivetrain combinations rather than forcing every buyer into a premium-priced model.

Do not judge it by an old headline price. Chevrolet’s live configurator is the appropriate source for current MSRP, destination, range, equipment and availability. Range varies by trim, drivetrain and wheel size, and the cheapest version may not include the battery, all-wheel drive or convenience features a buyer expects.

The Equinox EV can make more sense than a smaller Hyundai Kona Electric when rear-seat and cargo space matter. The Kona remains easier to park and may cost less. The Kia Niro EV is another practical option, but its DC fast-charging capability is less impressive than newer 800-volt-platform rivals. Compare the final dealer price, not the advertised base MSRP.

Best for charging-network convenience: Tesla Model Y

The Tesla Model Y remains a compelling choice for buyers who prioritize integrated software, route planning and access to a broad fast-charging network. Its hatchback body is highly practical for luggage, groceries and bulky cargo, and the updated 2026 model received changes to its styling, ride and cabin according to an Associated Press report on an Edmunds comparison.

Spigen Under Screen Storage Organizer for Tesla Model Y Juniper, 3 Highland
  • Upgraded Version: Our under screen storage organizer now includes a barrier that keeps your item from falling off and a cutout for the cabin temperature sensor for accurate climate control.
  • Smart Storage: Provide additional space both under and above the screen for easy access to your belongings.
  • Deep Silicone Padding: Reduce noise while increasing stability and protection for items in storage.
  • Easy Installation: Precise magnet attachment for quick and easy installation.
  • The Perfect Gift for Tesla Owners: A high-quality, practical accessory that suits everyday Tesla drivers—ideal for Christmas gift, father's day gift, New Years gift for family members or anyone who owns a Tesla Model 3/Y

Its advantage is not simply the vehicle’s peak charging specification. Tesla’s navigation, charging stops and network integration can reduce planning friction. Confirm current Supercharger access, adapter requirements and regional availability for the exact vehicle, since access for non-Tesla vehicles and charging arrangements can change.

The Model Y is not automatically the best fit. Tesla’s touchscreen-centered interface, limited physical controls, insurance pricing, service experience and rapidly changing trim prices may be deal-breakers. Its optional third row, where offered, is better treated as child-oriented or occasional seating than as a full-size family third row. Buyers who prefer a conventional interface or faster short charging stops may prefer the Ioniq 5, Kia EV6 or Ford Mustang Mach-E.

Best three-row electric SUV: Kia EV9

The Kia EV9 is one of the clearest choices for families that truly need three rows. Unlike many crossovers with nominal rear seats, the EV9 offers a genuinely useful third row, flexible second-row configurations and enough interior width to function as a family vehicle rather than an occasional novelty.

Kia’s 2026 build tool lists a $54,900 starting MSRP for the base configuration before destination, taxes, options and dealer charges. The build tool lists the base Light rear-wheel-drive model with 230 miles of EPA-estimated range; Kia’s overview presents higher figures for selected configurations, including an as-shown 280-mile figure and a maximum 305-mile figure. Higher-range, all-wheel-drive and GT-Line versions cost substantially more.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The EV9 uses an 800-volt charging architecture and offers NACS charging capability. It can seat up to seven in at least one configuration, but families should physically test the intended car seats, passengers and luggage. Third-row legroom, cargo space behind the third row and second-row captain’s chairs versus a bench can change the practical answer. Kia also says owners can access more than 47,000 DC fast chargers through Kia Charge Pass, including Tesla Superchargers; that is a manufacturer claim whose availability and terms should be checked by location and vehicle.

The Hyundai Ioniq 9 is a closely related three-row alternative. The Rivian R1S is better suited to adventure driving and towing, while the Volvo EX90 targets luxury buyers. Exact pricing, equipment, delivery timing and software status should be verified for each model year.

Best luxury electric SUV: BMW iX

The BMW iX is a premium five-seat SUV with a quiet, refined ride, a high-quality interior and strong performance. It is a better luxury recommendation than a simple range winner because comfort, cabin isolation and long-distance composure matter every day.

This is normal and does not indicate a product defect. Please see our dedicated crease recovery video in the main product video section for step-by-step instructions. Simply unroll the mats, lay them flat in a warm environment, and allow them to recover naturally. For stubborn creases, gently warm the affected area with a hair dryer on low heat while smoothing it by hand. Do not use high heat or place the heat source directly against the mat. Most creases will gradually disappear with proper recovery and normal use.

  • 【PREMIUM TPE WITH COMFORTABLE 3-LAYER DESIGN】: Made from odorless, flexible TPE that is soft yet durable. The multi-layer construction provides waterproof, anti-slip, and sound-dampening performance while maintaining a clean, factory-inspired look.

Edmunds places the iX among the leading luxury electric SUVs, and Consumer Reports includes the 2026 model in its electric luxury SUV coverage. Treat those as independent editorial context rather than a guarantee for every trim. BMW’s live configurator should be used for current range, pricing, options and incentives.

The iX’s disadvantages are financial as much as technical. Options can quickly raise the price, large wheels can reduce range, and insurance and collision repairs may be costly. The Cadillac Lyriq offers a quieter American luxury alternative at a potentially lower price. The Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV emphasizes serenity but is expensive. The EX90 adds a three-row layout and safety-led positioning. The Lucid Gravity promises exceptional range and space, but availability, service coverage, final EPA data and long-term support deserve careful verification.

Best for adventure and towing: Rivian R1S

The Rivian R1S is the electric SUV to consider when ground clearance, all-wheel-drive capability, cargo flexibility and towing matter more than low price. It also provides a real three-row layout, making it more versatile than many performance-oriented electric crossovers.

R1S range, motors, battery, tire choice, seating, towing capability and price vary considerably by configuration. Confirm the exact tow rating, payload, hitch equipment and trailer-brake compatibility before buying. Towing can reduce range dramatically, and off-road tires or high-clearance configurations can reduce it even without a trailer.

Rivian’s service-center geography is another part of the decision. A capable vehicle is a poor fit if routine service or a repair requires an impractical trip. For a less adventure-focused family vehicle, compare the EV9, Ioniq 9 and EX90.

Other electric SUVs worth considering

  • Ford Mustang Mach-E: a sporty five-seat crossover with a familiar dealer network and performance-oriented GT and Rally variants. Performance equipment can raise cost and reduce range.
  • Kia EV6: a sleek, quick-charging alternative to the Ioniq 5. It is sportier and less boxy, but not as naturally cargo-friendly.
  • Hyundai Kona Electric: a compact urban-friendly choice that is easy to park and potentially less expensive than larger EVs.
  • Kia Niro EV: efficient and practical for daily use, although its charging performance trails newer platforms.
  • Cadillac Lyriq: a comfortable, quiet luxury crossover with a lower-key driving character.
  • Volvo EX90: a three-row luxury SUV. Verify software features, equipment and delivery status by production batch.
  • Hyundai Ioniq 5 N: the extreme-performance version of the Ioniq 5 for buyers willing to trade efficiency, ride comfort and cost for track-focused ability.
  • Toyota bZ: worth comparing when local availability and pricing make it competitive, particularly for buyers who prefer Toyota’s dealer network.
  • Tesla Model X: a fast, spacious and technologically distinctive luxury SUV, but expensive and not ideal for shoppers who dislike Tesla’s interface or service model.
  • Cadillac Vistiq and Escalade IQ: larger luxury alternatives for buyers who need more presence and space. Their price, dimensions and operating costs are substantially higher.

Range: how much is enough?

Use these as planning bands, not promises:

  • About 200–250 miles: adequate for many urban and suburban drivers who charge at home.
  • About 250–320 miles: the most comfortable mainstream range band for mixed daily use and occasional trips.
  • More than 320 miles: helpful for frequent highway travel, cold climates, towing or drivers with limited charging access.

The highest advertised number may belong to a rear-wheel-drive version with small wheels. AWD, larger wheels, cold weather, highway speed, roof cargo and towing can all reduce usable distance. EPA range is a standardized estimate, not a guaranteed travel distance, and drivers should plan to reach a charger with a reserve rather than at zero percent.

Car and Driver identifies the Lucid Gravity as a potential long-range leader with a maximum estimated range of 450 miles, but any non-final or manufacturer-estimated figure must be distinguished from a finalized EPA rating. Compare the exact trim using the U.S. Department of Energy vehicle database and the manufacturer’s current specifications.

Charging and home ownership

Level 1

Level 1 uses an ordinary household outlet. It is slow, but it can work for a low-mileage driver with dedicated parking and many hours between trips.

Level 2

Level 2 normally uses a 240-volt circuit and is the usual overnight home-charging solution. Installation may require a new circuit, permits, longer conduit or an electrical-panel upgrade. The charger itself is only part of the cost.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DC fast charging

DC fast charging is primarily for road trips and quick top-ups. Peak power is not the same as charging time: the vehicle may accept high power only through part of the battery’s charge window. Battery preconditioning can improve results, especially in cold weather.

Before buying, answer these questions:

  1. Do you have dedicated parking?
  2. Can the electrical panel support a 240-volt circuit?
  3. Do you need landlord, homeowner-association or utility approval?
  4. Which connector does the exact vehicle use, and is an adapter included?
  5. Is the nearest fast charger reliable, compatible and open when you need it?
  6. What will public charging cost on your regular routes?

Drivers without home charging can still make an EV work with dependable workplace or local public charging. Exclusive reliance on public DC fast charging is usually less convenient and may cost more than home Level 2 charging. Compare local stations using PlugShare, Electrify America, EVgo, ChargePoint and the DOE station locator. Station status, pricing, idle fees and membership terms vary by location and time.

Winter driving, towing and performance

Cold weather reduces range and can slow charging because the battery and cabin require more energy. The effect is not a universal percentage: temperature, speed, wind, tires, heating demand, route elevation and battery temperature all matter. In a cold climate, prioritize a heat pump where available, battery preconditioning, winter tires and the ability to precondition while plugged in. AWD improves traction; it does not eliminate winter range loss.

For towing, verify the factory tow package, hitch receiver, trailer-brake requirements, payload and exact trim rating. Do not choose on battery size alone. A large battery does not prevent a trailer from increasing aerodynamic drag and reducing range.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For performance, the Ford Mustang Mach-E GT or Rally is a strong everyday-performance choice, the Kia EV6 is a quick compact alternative, and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is the extreme option. High-output BMW, Mercedes and Rivian versions add acceleration but usually cost more, consume tires faster, ride more firmly and provide less range.

Safety and reliability

Use independent safety testing rather than manufacturer claims. The IIHS 2026 full-electric list includes Top Safety Pick+ recipients such as the Hyundai Ioniq 9, Kia EV9, Rivian R1S and Volvo EX90, plus a Top Safety Pick designation for the Ford Mustang Mach-E. Awards are specific to model year, equipment and sometimes production date.

A safety award does not make every driver-assistance system equivalent. Adaptive cruise control, lane-centering, automatic emergency braking, hands-free highway assistance and autonomous driving are different things. These vehicles require an attentive, supervising driver; they do not provide fully autonomous driving for ordinary consumer use.

Reliability evidence is thinner for newly introduced models. Check battery and vehicle warranties, recall history, service-center access, mobile service, parts delays, software-update practices and the manufacturer’s repair process. Consumer Reports’ reliability and owner-satisfaction data can provide context, but new vehicles may not have enough long-term information for a firm reliability verdict.

Can an electric SUV cost less to own?

It can, but not automatically. Compare electricity, gasoline, insurance, tires, depreciation, financing, charging installation, public-charging fees, maintenance and verified incentives.

Use these calculations with local prices:

Annual EV energy cost = annual miles ÷ real-world miles per kWh × electricity price per kWh

Annual gasoline cost = annual miles ÷ gasoline mpg × gasoline price per gallon

Real-world efficiency is more useful than the most favorable EPA figure for this calculation. A higher purchase price, expensive insurance or frequent public fast charging can erase operating-cost savings. Lease and purchase offers should also be compared separately because manufacturer support, residual values, mileage limits, excess-wear charges and end-of-term purchase prices differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Federal incentives and dealer pricing

Federal clean-vehicle rules are volatile. Eligibility can depend on the purchase date, vehicle MSRP, buyer income, battery-sourcing requirements, point-of-sale treatment, leasing structure and whether the vehicle is new or used. Do not assume a credit applies because an older listing says it does. Confirm the current rules with the IRS, the dealer and the relevant state or utility administrator before signing.

Likewise, compare the complete transaction price: destination, documentation fees, required options, AWD, wheels, charger installation, financing and dealer discounts. A low advertised MSRP may describe a trim that lacks the battery, heat pump, charging equipment or driver-assistance features you actually want.

When an electric SUV may not be right yet

Consider a hybrid or efficient gasoline crossover if you cannot reliably charge at home, workplace or nearby public stations; frequently tow long distances; live far from service support; or need predictable refueling on routes with weak charging coverage. An EV can still be suitable, but the charging plan must work before the vehicle is purchased.

Electric SUV buying checklist

  1. Identify your normal daily mileage and longest regular trip.
  2. Price the exact trim with destination, options and dealer fees.
  3. Check the exact EPA range and wheel/drivetrain combination.
  4. Plan your real routes with A Better Routeplanner and check live station status.
  5. Confirm NACS or CCS compatibility and adapter requirements.
  6. Get a home-charger and electrical-panel estimate from qualified professionals.
  7. Obtain an insurance quote before choosing a performance or luxury trim.
  8. Test-fit child seats and sit in every row with the intended passengers.
  9. Verify cargo room behind the third row, hitch equipment and towing limits.
  10. Check local incentives, service-center coverage, warranty terms and recall information.
  11. Test the interface, climate controls, visibility, driver display and smartphone integration.

Final decision guide

  • Choose the Hyundai Ioniq 5 for the best balance of space, comfort, style and fast charging in a five-seat crossover.
  • Choose the Chevrolet Equinox EV for mainstream practicality and value, after comparing the exact trim and dealer price.
  • Choose the Tesla Model Y when charging-network integration and software convenience are your highest priorities.
  • Choose the Kia EV9 or Hyundai Ioniq 9 when your family genuinely needs three rows.
  • Choose the Rivian R1S for adventure use, ground clearance and serious towing potential.
  • Choose the BMW iX for premium comfort and refinement.
