The best electric family vehicle depends on how many people you carry, whether you need a third row, your budget, and how often you take longer trips. For a two-row shortlist, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 combines a lower listed starting price with a broad range of EPA estimates. For three rows, consider the Kia EV9 or Hyundai Ioniq 9; for a premium large-family option, consider the Lucid Gravity. These are electric SUVs, not a ranking of every electric body style, and the listed prices and ranges vary by configuration.

How this family-EV ranking works

There is no single family-EV winner. A two-row SUV may suit a household that mostly drives locally, while a third row can be essential for larger families or frequent passenger duty. The figures below follow Car and Driver’s 2026 family electric SUV ranking, which says its ratings draw on roughly 200 data points, including acceleration, handling, comfort, cargo space, efficiency, value, and driving enjoyment. Prices are listed starting prices and ranges are EPA estimates from that ranking; confirm the current price, equipment, and EPA range for the exact trim you are considering.

That is one publisher’s method, not a universal score. iSeeCars describes a different approach for its 2026 family rankings, combining reliability analysis and NHTSA and IIHS safety ratings with family-oriented considerations such as safety, storage or towing, comfort, and connectivity. A model’s position can therefore depend on what a ranking weighs.

Best electric SUVs for families, ranked

Rank Model Listed starting price EPA-estimated range Family fit
1 Lucid Gravity $81,550 337–450 miles Premium large-family candidate; compare the needed seating configuration and price against your budget.
2 Hyundai Ioniq 5 $36,650 245–318 miles Two-row option with a lower listed entry price; Car and Driver highlights its spacious interior and fast charging.
3 Kia EV9 $56,545 230–304 miles Three-row SUV for families needing additional seats.
5 Hyundai Ioniq 9 $60,605 311–335 miles Three-row alternative for additional passenger capacity.

Rank, price, and range are from Car and Driver’s 2026 ranking, viewed October 8, 2026. Prices and ranges span model configurations; they are not promises that every trim costs or travels the same. The ranking does not list a number-four entry in the figures summarized here.

1. Lucid Gravity: premium space and long-range potential

Car and Driver ranks the Gravity first and lists a starting price of $81,550 with EPA-estimated range of 337–450 miles. That makes it worth considering when a family wants a large, premium SUV and has the budget for it. The ranking alone does not make it the right choice for a typical household: compare the specific seating layout, trim price, and actual passenger and luggage needs before treating its top position as a recommendation for your family.

2. Hyundai Ioniq 5: two-row value candidate

The Ioniq 5 is ranked second, with a listed starting price of $36,650 and EPA-estimated range of 245–318 miles. Car and Driver describes a spacious interior and fast charging. Its two-row layout may make more sense than a larger, costlier SUV if you do not need a third row. Test your own child seats and luggage in the configuration you plan to buy; a general ranking cannot establish whether a specific seat fits behind another.

3. Kia EV9: three rows for a larger household

The EV9 is ranked third, starting at $56,545, with an EPA-estimated range of 230–304 miles. Kia’s 2026 product page lists an available 99.8-kWh battery and towing capacity of up to 5,000 pounds, both dependent on configuration. Kia also says the 2026 EV9 received a five-star NHTSA overall score and a 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award; treat the NHTSA statement as Kia’s attribution and check the current official rating record for the vehicle configuration and model year. See Kia’s 2026 EV9 specifications.

5. Hyundai Ioniq 9: another three-row option

Car and Driver lists the Ioniq 9 at $60,605 starting, with estimated range of 311–335 miles, and ranks it fifth. Its three-row layout puts it on the shortlist for families needing more passenger capacity. Compare the actual trim’s price and equipment with the EV9 rather than assuming the listed starting prices represent equivalent vehicles.

Which electric SUV has a third row?

Among the models detailed in this ranking, the Kia EV9 and Hyundai Ioniq 9 are three-row candidates. The Lucid Gravity is described here as a premium large-family candidate, but confirm the exact seating configuration you would purchase. Seating count alone does not settle fit: bring the people and child seats who will use the vehicle, and check access to the rearmost seats and the luggage space left when all required seats are occupied.

How much range does a family EV need?

Start with your ordinary daily mileage, then consider how often you drive beyond the vehicle’s practical charging range and where you can recharge. The ranking’s EPA estimates span 230 to 450 miles across the configurations shown, but the range attached to a model is not a charging-speed figure and does not tell you how quickly a road-trip stop will be. Check the EPA estimate for the precise trim, then plan longer trips around available charging stops and the time your family can spend at them.

Four wear-resistant off-road tires, LED headlights, and a working horn complete the realistic ride-on experience for kids
  • Mostly local driving: A lower-range trim may work if your routine is comfortably within its usable trip range and you have dependable charging access.
  • Frequent road trips: Compare the exact trim’s range and charging capability, and map charging stops along routes you actually use.
  • Cold-weather use: iSeeCars notes that all-wheel drive may give families in colder climates greater confidence. Treat AWD as a use-case choice, not a universal family requirement.

Check the family fit before choosing a trim

Published rankings do not provide a uniform cross-model test of child-seat installation or cargo capacity with every row in use. A showroom check is especially important for a three-row vehicle: the seats that look useful in a specification sheet may leave less room for the luggage your family carries.

  1. Bring your child seats. Install them in the seating positions you expect to use, and check buckle access, front-seat clearance, and whether adults can reach the third row.
  2. Load the family’s usual gear. Test the stroller, bags, sports equipment, or other bulky items with the needed passenger seats upright.
  3. Compare equivalent trims. Confirm seating, drivetrain, battery, range, and equipment on the exact versions being priced; model-wide starting prices are not like-for-like comparisons.
  4. Check car-seat information. NHTSA provides a car-seat Ease of Use Ratings tool as a separate resource. It does not replace trying your own seat in the vehicle.

How to read the safety evidence

IIHS’s 2026 full-electric award list names the 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 5, 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 9, 2026 Kia EV9, 2026–27 Rivian R1S, and 2027 Tesla Model Y as Top Safety Pick+ recipients; the 2026 Ford Mustang Mach-E is listed as a Top Safety Pick. Awards are tied to model years and IIHS size categories, so they are not a direct cross-size crash comparison. IIHS cautions: “Thus, a small car that qualifies for an award might not protect its occupants as well as a bigger vehicle that doesn’t earn the award.” Review IIHS’s 2026 full-electric award list.

NHTSA’s 2026 model-year page lists the Rivian R1S and Tesla Model Y Long Range among vehicles selected for 5-Star Safety Ratings testing. Selection for testing is not a star-rating result. The Ioniq 5 appears separately on an advanced crash-avoidance verification-testing list, which likewise should not be described as a crash-test rating. Check the specific vehicle in NHTSA’s rating lookup rather than inferring a result from inclusion on a testing list. Use NHTSA’s vehicle safety ratings lookup.

A vehicle without an NHTSA New Car Assessment Program rating is not thereby shown to fail federal safety standards: NHTSA says unrated vehicles are manufacturer-certified as complying with applicable federal motor vehicle safety standards. Model year and, where applicable, build-date conditions matter when checking awards or ratings.

Other family-relevant models to investigate

The Ford Mustang Mach-E, Rivian R1S, Tesla Model Y, and Volvo EX90 also appear in safety or testing sources. That is not the same as being ranked among the family SUVs listed above. Consider them if their size, seating, and trim choices fit your needs, and verify the exact model-year safety information and vehicle specifications before comparing.

Make the shortlist match your household

  • Need two rows and want a lower listed entry price: Start with the Ioniq 5, then verify rear-seat and cargo fit in person.
  • Need three rows: Compare the EV9 and Ioniq 9 on equivalent trim equipment, price, and range.
  • Want a premium large-family vehicle: Consider the Gravity, while confirming its configuration and total price align with your budget.
  • Safety is a priority: Check the model-year-specific IIHS award and NHTSA result, and distinguish a testing selection from a published rating.
