For many beginners, the Yamaha XT250 or Honda CRF300LS is a sensible place to start comparing: both have a published 32.7-inch seat height, though their weights and equipment differ. Neither is automatically the best choice for every rider. Fit, confidence, intended roads and trails, and budget matter more than a single spec. Sit on the exact model and trim, check local licensing requirements, and consider taking a beginner rider course before choosing.
What makes a dual-sport motorcycle beginner-friendly?
There is no manufacturer-defined beginner rating or independent comparison here that establishes one universally easiest or safest model. Use specifications as a shortlist, not a verdict.
- Fit: Seat height can influence how comfortable a stop feels, but it does not tell you how the bike will feel in motion. Sit on the exact model and trim; reach, balance, and confidence matter.
- Weight: A lighter motorcycle may be easier to manage after a tip-over, but the listed figures use different manufacturer terms—wet, curb, and kerb—and are not necessarily measured on the same basis.
- Riding plans: Consider how much highway travel you expect, the roads and trails you will use, and the speed and terrain involved. A bike that suits short local rides may not be the right fit for frequent faster-road travel.
- Practicalities: Compare fuel capacity with your intended routes, and check the specific trim’s ABS equipment and whether it can be adjusted for off-road riding.
- Total cost: Account for local taxes and fees, destination or freight charges, dealer fees, optional equipment, licensing, and protective gear—not just a listed starting price or MSRP.
Beginner dual-sport motorcycles to compare
The specifications below are manufacturer-published figures for the named market and model year. They are not a head-to-head test, and weight labels should not be treated as interchangeable.
| Model and market/year | Published specifications | Why it may suit a beginner |
|---|---|---|
| Yamaha XT250 — U.S., 2025 | 249cc; 32.7-inch seat; 291 lb wet. Yamaha listed a $5,499 starting price plus a $375 destination charge on its 2025 page. | A lower-seat, relatively light option to consider for riders who prioritize manageable fit. The listed price is specific to that model-year page and may not reflect current dealer pricing. |
| Honda CRF300LS — U.S., 2025 | 286cc; 32.7-inch seat; 311 lb curb; 2.1-gallon fuel capacity; ABS on both front and rear brakes. | Its low published seat height and stated front-and-rear ABS make it a useful comparison for riders seeking those features. It is heavier than the XT250 by the manufacturers’ stated figures, which use different weight terms. |
| Honda CRF300L — UK, 2025 | 286cc; 880mm seat; 142kg kerb weight; 7.8L tank; six-speed transmission; two-channel ABS. Honda states fuel consumption of 3.1 L/100km. | A standard 300-class option in the UK market. These UK figures should not be mixed with U.S. specifications or assumed to describe another market’s trim. |
| Kawasaki KLX300 — U.S., 2026 | 292cc; 35.2-inch seat; 302.1 lb curb; 2.0-gallon fuel capacity; 10.8 inches of ground clearance. | A standard lightweight dual-sport candidate. Kawasaki defines its curb weight as including fluids, more than 90 percent fuel capacity, and the supplied tool kit if applicable. |
| Suzuki DR-Z4S — U.S., 2025 | 36.2-inch seat; 333 lb curb; 2.3-gallon fuel capacity. Suzuki listed $8,999 MSRP before taxes and fees, destination, and optional equipment. | Compare it if its fit and intended use work for you, but its published seat height and curb weight make it less obvious for riders prioritizing a lower seat or low mass. |
Which one should you shortlist?
If seat height is your main concern
Start by sitting on the Yamaha XT250 and Honda CRF300LS: both are listed at 32.7 inches for their U.S. 2025 specifications. Their listed weights differ (291 lb wet for the Yamaha and 311 lb curb for the Honda), but those labels do not guarantee a like-for-like comparison. A shared seat-height figure also cannot determine which motorcycle will feel better balanced to you.

If you want a standard 300-class option
Compare the Honda CRF300L and Kawasaki KLX300, while keeping their markets and years straight: the cited Honda specifications are for the UK 2025 model, and the Kawasaki figures are for the U.S. 2026 model. The Kawasaki page lists 10.8 inches of ground clearance; the cited Honda UK page lists a six-speed transmission and two-channel ABS. Those details may help frame questions about your routes, but do not establish which bike is easier to ride.
If you are considering the Suzuki DR-Z4S
The U.S. 2025 DR-Z4S is the tallest and heaviest option in this list by its published figures: 36.2 inches and 333 lb curb. That may be a less comfortable starting point for someone who prioritizes a lower seat or lower stated weight. Whether it fits you depends on your body, experience, and intended riding.

Can a beginner ride a 300cc dual sport?
Engine displacement alone cannot answer that. The listed models range from 249cc to 292cc, but displacement does not establish a rider’s fit, confidence, skill, or whether a motorcycle suits a particular trail or road. Consider the motorcycle as a whole, sit on the exact trim, and choose training appropriate to your experience.
What to check before buying
- Confirm the exact bike: Verify model year, market, and trim with the manufacturer or dealer. A low-seat version such as the U.S. CRF300LS is not interchangeable with the UK CRF300L.
- Check fit in person: Sit on the motorcycle and assess whether you can stop and balance with confidence. Do not choose solely from a seat-height number.
- Match it to your routes: Consider highway frequency, road speeds, trail difficulty, fuel capacity, and whether the stated equipment suits your intended riding.
- Ask about ABS behavior: Confirm the precise trim’s ABS setup and whether it can be adjusted for off-road use; the listed ABS details do not establish off-road adjustability.
- Get a complete local cost: Ask a dealer for current availability and an itemized quote, including destination or freight, dealer charges, taxes, and required equipment. Listed prices are not a current out-the-door quote.
- Check local rules and training: Confirm licensing and road requirements where you live, then find an appropriate local beginner course.
Take a rider course before heading out
The Motorcycle Safety Foundation describes its Start Your Ride courses as suitable for people learning to ride or with limited experience. Its Basic RiderCourse description says it includes two five-hour sessions of on-bike instruction over a weekend and covers core riding skills and licensing. Schedules and licensing rules vary by location, so check with a local provider.
