For a street-focused starting point, Ford’s X2-head 347 package is the clearest manufacturer-documented example—but it is a matched engine combination, not proof that the X2 is a universal winner. For a custom build, choose heads to suit the cam, compression, intake, exhaust, fuel, target RPM and intended use, then verify fit and clearances.
What heads work on a 347 stroker?
A 347 is a 302-based Windsor small-block Ford build. Ford lists its M-6009-347 short block at 347 cubic inches, with a 4.030-inch bore and 3.400-inch stroke. The short block is intended to be completed with the builder’s chosen heads, cam and oil pan, so the displacement alone does not identify the right head. Ford Performance’s short-block specifications also call for checking piston-to-valve clearance and identify head-family fitment limits; confirm the exact head and short-block part numbers before assembly.
Which heads make sense for a street 347 Mustang?
Ford X2: a documented street-cruising reference
Ford’s X2347D street-cruiser engine pairs X2 heads with a matched cam, Edelbrock Performer RPM Air-Gap intake and Holley carburetor. Ford describes the package as optimized for street cruising on pump gas. Its published head specifications are a 64 cc chamber, 1.94-inch intake valves and 1.54-inch exhaust valves. These figures describe the head; they do not establish its superiority over other heads or predict output on a different combination. See Ford’s X2347D product description.
Ford Z2: another Windsor option to evaluate
Ford specifies the Z2 for 289, 302 and 351W engines. It has a 63 cc chamber, 2.05/1.60-inch intake and exhaust valves, OEM intake and exhaust port locations, and 1.65-ratio stud-mount rocker arms. Those features make it a distinct option to assess against the rest of a custom 347, not a guaranteed bolt-on performance upgrade. Ford instructs installers to check both piston-to-valve and radial valve clearance before installation. Consult the Z2 specifications and installation warning.

When is the Z304D a suitable choice?
The Z304D is a more specialized competition-oriented option, not the default street recommendation. Ford lists 204 cc intake and 85 cc exhaust ports, a 63 cc chamber, and suggested 2.02/1.60-inch valves. The bare head requires competition valve work and bowl blending. Ford also warns that its raised exhaust port may call for custom headers and that its tall ports will not match every intake. Check the intended manifold, exhaust system, machining and vehicle application before choosing it. Ford’s listing carries a competition/off-highway warning; see the Z304D specifications.
How should you compare heads for a custom build?
There is no controlled apples-to-apples test in the cited Ford material comparing X2, Z2 and Z304D heads on the same 347. Compare the complete combinations instead of relying on a head name or a single dimension.

- Complete disassembly and thorough cleaning via hot tank & pressure tested to confirm casting integrity
- New valve seats installed as necessary
- New valve stem seals installed on all our heads & all valve guides are replaced with new ones as necessary.
- Valve job Performed with all required angles & vacuum tested seals to ensure perfect compression.
- All necessary parts are cleaned and inspected before final assembly to meet AERA specifications
- Intended use and RPM: Decide whether the Mustang is primarily a street cruiser, street/strip car or competition build. Ford positions the X2347D as a street-cruising package and its sealed 347 as a circle-track engine.
- Matched components: Confirm the cam, compression, intake, carburetion or EFI, rocker ratio and valve springs work together. The X2347D and Ford’s racing package are described as complete combinations, not head-only upgrades. Ford’s X2347 EFI crate-engine information is another example of a specified package.
- Geometry and fit: Compare chamber volume, valve size, port volume and location, and the intake-manifold match. Port dimensions alone do not establish power on your engine.
- Assembly and clearance: Have the builder check piston-to-valve and radial clearance, along with valve job, rocker and pushrod setup, springs and any required machining.
- Vehicle constraints: Verify the Mustang’s year-specific accessory and exhaust clearance, plus any emissions rules that apply where the car will be registered or driven.
Why a horsepower figure does not rank cylinder heads
Ford lists its sealed circle-track 347 at 415 hp at 6,000 rpm and 400 lb-ft at 4,900 rpm, with headers and a 650 CFM Holley carburetor. That figure belongs to a complete racing combination using Z heads, a specified cam and rocker setup, and a Victor Jr. intake; Ford describes the engine for asphalt and dirt circle-track use. It is not a street-Mustang result or a measurement of the heads alone. See Ford’s sealed racing engine listing.

What to confirm before buying
- Write down the exact short-block and head part numbers, along with the cam, pistons, intake, fuel system and planned RPM range.
- Ask the engine builder or manufacturer to confirm head-family compatibility and any required machining or valve work.
- Verify piston-to-valve and radial clearance during assembly; do not assume a Windsor designation guarantees clearance.
- Check intake-port alignment and exhaust/header fit in the actual Mustang, especially when considering the Z304D.
- Confirm that the resulting setup suits the car’s street, competition and emissions requirements.
