The best classic car for beach cruising depends on the kind of coastal drive you want: a purpose-built, roofless beach car for distinctive style, a utility-derived open car for a more upright look, or a conventional convertible for familiar open-top touring. The Citroën Méhari is the practical-minded beach-associated choice in this group; the Fiat 500 Jolly is the style-led pick; and the Mini Beach Car is the standout for rarity. These are choices for paved roads and beach-town streets—not recommendations for driving on sand.
What counts as a classic beach car?
“Beach car” can describe more than one kind of vehicle. Some were purpose-built as open-air leisure cars, with few barriers between occupants and the surroundings. Others began as utility or military-inspired designs and later acquired beach-town appeal. A third option is a conventional classic convertible selected for a scenic drive to the coast.

That distinction matters when you choose. A roofless body can deliver a particularly open-air experience, but the available descriptions do not establish comparative comfort, luggage capacity, weather protection, reliability, or ease of entry. A classic convertible may look more familiar, but it is a different proposition from a purpose-built spiaggina. The shortlist below treats these vehicles as coastal-road cruisers; it does not establish that any is suitable for beach sand.

Purpose-built beach cars
Fiat 500 Jolly: the style-led spiaggina
The Fiat 500 Jolly is a recognizable beach-car conversion based on the Fiat 500. Its umbrella-like canvas roof and wicker seats make its leisure-car purpose unusually clear. Classic & Sports Car describes it as one of the best-known beach cars, making it a natural choice for someone who values a distinctive period look over a conventional enclosed-car layout.
Its profile is also a reminder not to equate fame with easy sourcing. The available account supports treating the Jolly as rare and considering sourcing carefully; it does not establish current supply, asking prices, or a typical market value. If you are considering one, verify the identity and condition of the particular car, and ask a marque specialist what documentation and parts support are available for that example.
Mini Beach Car: the design-and-rarity choice
The Mini Beach Car is one of the most unusual designs on this list. MINI’s heritage account describes a variant with no doors and a floating roof, an exceptionally airy arrangement that prioritizes access and openness over the enclosed-car conventions most drivers expect.
Recommended Free Tools
Its production history is unusually specific. MINI says Longbridge records document 14 left-hand-drive cars made between 1961 and 1962. The company estimates that at least 16 BMC examples were built overall, including at least one additional right-hand-drive car loaned to Queen Elizabeth II; coachbuilder Pavesi also made further cars. The exact total is therefore not a simple factory-count figure, and the Pavesi cars are outside the stated BMC estimate. The history establishes exceptional scarcity, not the number currently available to buy.
Choose the Mini Beach Car for its design and historical interest rather than assuming it will work as an everyday vehicle. Its doorless layout is a defining feature, but the available source does not compare ease of entry, weather protection, or practical use with other cars. A prospective buyer should assess those points on the specific vehicle and intended route.

Citroën Méhari: the utility-minded beach classic
The Citroën Méhari brings a more utility-oriented character to open-air motoring. It used a 2CV-derived frame and plastic body panels mounted on a tubular structure. Classic & Sports Car reports that around 145,000 were built before production ended in 1987, a much larger production run than the Mini Beach Car figures documented by MINI.
Hagerty UK says the designer chose greater ground clearance and larger wheels, and describes the fiberglass body as not rusting. Keep that statement scoped to the body material: it does not mean every metal component is immune to corrosion or establish how a particular surviving car has fared. Its design makes the Méhari the clearest utility-oriented option among the purpose-built beach-associated cars here, but the sources do not establish modern-day reliability or parts availability.

Open cars with utility or military roots
Volkswagen Thing / Type 181: upright and utilitarian
The Volkswagen Thing, also known as the Type 181, offers a different story from the purpose-built leisure cars. It is an open, Beetle-derived car that was initially developed as a military vehicle rather than as a California beach car. That origin makes it a fitting choice for readers who like a practical-looking, upright design and the contrast between a work-oriented beginning and later beach-town associations.
Do not treat its popularity as a beach image as evidence of sand-driving capability. The historical description establishes its military development and open-car character; it does not establish suitability for beach terrain, comparative comfort, or the condition of any particular example.
Mini Moke: a compact cult classic
The Mini Moke was intended as a light military vehicle and was later adopted for beach use. Hagerty UK characterizes it as a cult classic with a simple-to-run Mini basis. That is the publication’s general description, not the result of a current ownership test or a guarantee about maintenance for an individual car.

The Moke belongs on a coastal-cruising shortlist if you want a compact, open-air vehicle with an unusual military-to-leisure history. Before buying, ask a specialist about the exact car’s condition, support for its parts, and whether its layout works for your passengers and luggage. The source material does not provide a model-specific reliability comparison or current parts inventory.
Classic convertibles for a coastal drive
Chevrolet Corvette convertible: the sports-car alternative
A Corvette convertible is the sports-car choice rather than a purpose-built beach car. Chevrolet’s heritage history covers Corvette generations beginning in 1953, giving the name a long-running place in the marque’s story. Its appeal in this shortlist is the combination of a classic sports-car identity and open-top touring, not a claim that it shares the layout or utility of a Jolly, Méhari, Moke, or Thing.
“Corvette” spans multiple generations, so a buyer must identify the exact year and specification before making a decision. Chevrolet’s heritage overview is useful for the model’s history, but it does not supply a single set of dimensions, ownership costs, current values, or condition guidance that applies to every generation.
1959 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz: big-fin luxury
The 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz is the large, conspicuous choice. General Motors’ Heritage Collection calls it the quintessential “big fin” convertible and describes its extensive chrome and leather. GM gives its weight as two-and-a-half tons and records a 1959 production price of $7,401. That price is historical, not a current valuation.
GM also says cruise control was a first for a production Cadillac in 1959 and describes the model as highly collectible. This is a luxury-oriented convertible, not a compact runabout. Its size and character make it a very different answer from a small open beach car; readers should consider the intended roads, parking, and the individual vehicle’s condition rather than assuming that the beach association makes it easy to use.

Porsche 356 Cabriolet: a smaller sporting option
The Porsche 356 Cabriolet suits a reader looking for an open-top classic with a sporting identity. Porsche’s account of the 356’s early production explains that the flat engine was moved to the rear and that the cabriolet was produced alongside the coupé. The Cabriolet’s folding top gives it a more conventional convertible arrangement than the doorless Mini Beach Car.
Porsche says the 356 C Cabriolet continued into model year 1965. That detail identifies the end point given for that version; it should not be read as a claim that every 356 Cabriolet is a 356 C or that the model’s whole production history ended then. When comparing candidates, confirm the exact series and year rather than relying on the broad 356 name.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose for your kind of coastal cruising
Start with the body style you actually want
- For purpose-built beach-car character: consider the Jolly, Mini Beach Car, or Méhari. Their designs are explicitly associated with open-air leisure or beach use, but they differ substantially in look and layout.
- For a utility-derived appearance: consider the Thing or Moke. Their military beginnings are part of their appeal, but do not confuse that history with proof of sand capability.
- For a conventional convertible: consider the Corvette, Eldorado Biarritz, or 356 Cabriolet. These are open-top classics with different sporting, luxury, and size profiles.
Match the car to the route and occupants
Think through the paved trip you expect to make: how many people need to ride, how much luggage they will bring, whether you need a roof that closes, and how easy it is for everyone to get in and out. The sources describe body layouts, but they do not offer standardized measurements or tests that let you rank these cars for capacity or comfort. Inspect the specific vehicle in person where possible and try the seating and luggage arrangement with the intended occupants and bags.
Weather protection is another model-specific question. A canvas or folding roof is not a standardized promise about how well a particular car seals, and a roofless or doorless layout has obvious exposure that should be weighed against the open-air experience. Ask the seller or a specialist to demonstrate the roof and closures, and check their condition rather than inferring performance from the model name.

Separate rarity from purchase availability
Production history can help explain why two cars are different propositions, but it cannot tell you how many sound examples are for sale today. MINI’s documented production account makes the Mini Beach Car especially scarce in historical terms; the Méhari’s reported run of around 145,000 indicates a substantially larger original production scale. Neither figure establishes present-day inventory, value, or the condition of surviving cars.

For any rare or unusual variant, ask for documentation supporting its identity and history. Have a qualified specialist inspect the specific car, and establish what parts and expertise are accessible before committing. These are sensible due-diligence questions, not claims that one model is reliably easier to own than another.
Account for coastal exposure without assuming a model-specific remedy
Coastal use makes it worth asking how the car has been stored and exposed, and what inspection or care a specialist recommends for that vehicle. The sources here do not provide model-specific salt-air maintenance instructions, so there is no evidence-based universal checklist of treatments to apply to all eight cars. For the Méhari in particular, the plastic or fiberglass body description should not be mistaken for proof that its metal structure and other components cannot corrode.
What “best for the beach” does—and does not—mean
Mazda’s guidance uses the reader-facing question “What is the best vehicle for driving to the beach?” That wording usefully separates a road trip to a beach from driving on sand. The evidence here supports choosing a classic for coastal roads and beach-town streets. It does not establish that any vehicle on this list is suitable for sand, and the cars should not be presented as beach-terrain recommendations.
Historical beach associations can be misleading when taken out of context. The Thing and Moke began with military or light military ambitions; the Jolly, Mini Beach Car, and Méhari have more direct beach-car identities; and the convertibles are included because an open top can suit scenic touring. Those histories explain character, not off-road capability. If a planned route leaves paved roads, use vehicle-specific guidance and confirm what the vehicle is designed and equipped to do.
Bottom line: pick by purpose, not by the beach label
For a purpose-built look, the Fiat 500 Jolly is the style-led choice; for an unusually rare design, the Mini Beach Car is the historical standout; and for a utility-oriented beach-associated car, the Méhari has the most substantial production history in the supplied figures. The Thing and Moke bring military-derived character, while the Corvette, Eldorado Biarritz, and 356 Cabriolet are classic convertibles for readers who would rather take a familiar open-top touring route. Choose for the paved trip, the occupants, and the individual car’s condition—not an assumption that “beach car” means driving on sand.
