Best Classic American Luxury Sedans for Comfortable, Low-Cost Cruising

The 1985 tested Buick Electra led a small period mileage comparison, but no classic luxury sedan is automatically cheap to own. Compare exact configurations, condition, local repair access and real fuel use.

The 1985 Buick Electra is the strongest mileage lead in the period comparison available here: the tested Electra returned about 21 mpg overall, versus about 17 mpg for the tested Mercury Grand Marquis and Chrysler Fifth Avenue. Those are results for specific test cars, not a guarantee about every year or surviving example. For an old luxury sedan, “low-cost” is an ownership question—not a promise of cheap fuel, repairs, or parts. Start with the condition and configuration of the individual car, then verify its actual highway fuel use and local service costs.

What “low-cost cruising” means for a classic luxury sedan

A large, comfortable old sedan can be pleasant on the highway without being inexpensive to own. Fuel economy is only one part of the calculation. A car that uses less fuel on a period test may still be the wrong choice if its condition is poor, needed parts are difficult to source locally, or its repair needs outweigh its asking price.

The evidence supports a comparison of historical classifications and a small set of 1985 fuel-economy observations. It does not establish current market prices, modern reliability rankings, safety winners, or cost per mile. Treat the figures below as context for choosing what to inspect—not as a present-day buying verdict.

  • Comfort: Assess the actual ride, noise, seat support, and condition of the cabin in the car you are considering.
  • Fuel: Match mileage claims to the car’s model year, engine, transmission, equipment, and driving conditions. A period test or rating is not a promise for an old car today.
  • Ownership: Check structural condition, repair access, local parts availability, and likely work before deciding that a low asking price or favorable mileage makes the car inexpensive.

How these cars fit the period luxury market

“Luxury” did not mean only Cadillac or Lincoln. Consumer Guide’s retrospective on its 1970 guide placed the Buick Electra and Oldsmobile 98 in a “Luxury Standards” tier below the “Prestige” group, which included Cadillac DeVille, Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham, Imperial Crown and LeBaron, and Lincoln Continental. That distinction helps explain why an Electra or 98 can be a useful comparison with a prestige sedan without treating the cars as identical in status or equipment.

The 1970 figures below are original-period specifications reported in Consumer Guide’s retrospective, not current prices or measurements of every later model. The two cars were both listed at 225 inches long and 4,500 pounds in the specified sedan configurations.

1970 model Period classification Base sedan price then Overall length Curb weight Base engine
Buick Electra Luxury Standard $4,461 225 inches 4,500 pounds 455-cubic-inch V8, 370 hp
Oldsmobile 98 Town Sedan Luxury Standard $4,451 225 inches 4,500 pounds 455-cubic-inch V8, 365 hp

These are historical new-car prices, not a guide to what either car costs now. The numbers also describe the 1970 range; they should not be transferred to an Electra or 98 from another model year.

What the 1985 fuel-economy comparison does—and does not—show

A January 1985 Consumer Reports comparison, reproduced by Mike’s Cars, recorded about 21 mpg overall for its tested Buick Electra and about 17 mpg overall for its tested Mercury Grand Marquis and Chrysler Fifth Avenue. The report framed the appeal of the large-car experience as “The quiet and comfort of the large-car ride.” The result offers a useful period snapshot of the trade-off, not a universal ranking of the model lines.

Tested car in the January 1985 report Reported overall fuel economy How to interpret it
Buick Electra About 21 mpg Observation for the specific test car; not a rating for every Electra engine or year.
Mercury Grand Marquis About 17 mpg Observation for the specific test car; not a rating for every Grand Marquis configuration.
Chrysler Fifth Avenue About 17 mpg Observation for the specific test car; not a rating for every Fifth Avenue configuration.

The Buick result does not prove that every Electra will out-mile every Grand Marquis or Fifth Avenue. The 1985 comparison included a four-door Electra with a 3.8-litre V6 option, but the mileage observation should still be attributed to the tested car rather than extended to all Electras or treated as a model-wide guarantee. Do not combine that 1985 information with the 1970 Electra’s 455-cubic-inch V8 specifications.

For added context, the EPA’s 1978 California Gas Mileage Guide said its estimates came from controlled tests of well-maintained vehicles and cautioned: “No standardized test of this type can ever represent each person’s individual driving.” The guide reported that more than half of surveyed drivers said their average mileage was within 2 mpg of the estimate, while about 10 percent reported mileage more than 5 mpg away. Those figures concern driver reports against that guide’s estimates; they do not predict what a decades-old sedan will return now.

The practical lesson is to compare like with like. A highway estimate, an overall result from a magazine test, and a figure printed in an advertisement have different origins. Even when two numbers both use mpg, they need not describe the same route, test method, vehicle condition, or configuration. Before treating a historic number as relevant, identify what it actually describes and how closely the car for sale matches it.

Which sedans are worth considering?

Buick Electra: the mileage lead in the cited 1985 comparison

If fuel economy is a priority and you are comparing the specific cars represented in the 1985 report, the Electra is the best place to start: its tested example returned about 21 mpg overall, compared with about 17 mpg for the tested Grand Marquis and Fifth Avenue. The evidence does not establish that an Electra is the least expensive car to own today, or that a different Electra engine, transmission, or model year will produce the same result. Inspect the actual car and verify its configuration before using the period figure in your decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That makes the Electra a lead to investigate, not an automatic winner. Ask the seller for the year and powertrain details, and compare those details with the test car before drawing a mileage conclusion. Then weigh the car’s condition and local repair needs. The 1970 Electra’s large 455-cubic-inch V8 is one historical configuration; it is not interchangeable with the 1985 test comparison.

Oldsmobile 98 Regency: a long-running rear-drive option

The 1977–1984 Oldsmobile 98 Regency generation is a rear-wheel-drive choice with sedan and coupe body styles. Classic & Sports Car describes the 1977 launch range as including Luxury and Regency trims and a 5.7-litre, 170-hp V8. A turbodiesel V8 joined during the 1978 model year; the publication characterizes that engine as fragile. Do not assume a diesel car is a low-cost choice based on fuel type alone.

The same account says the 98 continued through 1984, then changed to a smaller front-wheel-drive model for 1985, and describes surviving examples as readily available. That historical observation can help identify candidates, but it does not guarantee a good car, a particular local supply, or affordable parts. Confirm the generation and drivetrain you are looking at: a 1985 98 is not the rear-wheel-drive 1977–1984 car.

For a buyer who specifically wants the earlier rear-drive car, the model-year boundary is important enough to check against the vehicle itself rather than assume from a badge or seller description. The launch engines and later diesel option are also not equivalent ownership propositions. If considering the turbodiesel, take the source’s fragility warning seriously and base the decision on a careful inspection and a realistic local repair estimate, not a general belief that diesel means economical.

Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham and DeVille: prestige-class comfort, condition first

Consumer Guide’s 1970 classification places Cadillac DeVille and Fleetwood Brougham in its Prestige group. For later cars, Classic & Sports Car says Cadillac dropped the Fleetwood designation for model year 1987 and continued building the saloon through 1992 after exterior changes. A nameplate alone is therefore not enough to identify a specific car’s year or configuration.

Classic & Sports Car describes parts for these Cadillacs as reasonably easy to find and cheap. Treat that as a general editorial observation, not a current quote or guarantee of local availability, price, or repair access. Ask shops and parts suppliers in your area about the exact car and the work it needs before relying on that description.

The period prestige label may help explain the Cadillac’s place in the market, but it cannot tell you how well a particular example has been maintained. For any Fleetwood Brougham or DeVille, verify the model year and identity, then price the parts and service required by that car. Broad statements about parts are a useful reason to make inquiries, not a substitute for a supplier confirming stock and fitment.

Mercury Grand Marquis and Ford LTD Crown Victoria: traditional large-car twins

The January 1985 report describes the Grand Marquis and Ford LTD Crown Victoria as traditional rear-wheel-drive large cars and identifies them as twins. The tested Grand Marquis returned about 17 mpg overall in that comparison. That figure is useful for understanding the period fuel-economy trade-off, not for estimating every Crown Victoria or Grand Marquis or judging current reliability and running costs.

The twin description gives shoppers a reason to compare both nameplates, but it does not make every year, engine, or individual car identical. Check the exact configuration and condition of the one being offered. If the attraction is the traditional large-car format, also take a highway drive to assess whether its actual ride, noise level, seats, and cabin suit you; a period report’s general praise for large-car comfort is not a guarantee about a worn example.

Chrysler Fifth Avenue: a comfort comparison in a smaller size class

The 1985 report describes the Fifth Avenue as a rear-wheel-drive, dressed-up medium-sized Dodge Diplomat or Plymouth Gran Fury—not a full-size car. Its tested example returned about 17 mpg overall in the comparison. It may suit a shopper interested in a traditional, comfortable sedan who does not need the dimensions of the largest alternatives, but compare its actual cabin and trunk space with your needs rather than relying on its styling or name.

Its size distinction can matter if you are shopping for the comfort and traditional rear-drive character rather than maximum exterior dimensions. Still, the report’s description does not supply a measurement of a particular car’s passenger or luggage space. Try the seats and assess the cabin and trunk in person, especially if you expect to use the car for long trips.

Period mileage figures: match the exact car before comparing

Old mileage numbers are easy to misuse because a model name can cover multiple engines, transmissions, and equipment packages. Period advertising and standardized test estimates are not interchangeable with one another or with a present-day road result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, Click Americana reproduces period advertising for two different 1978 Oldsmobiles: an Omega Brougham with a standard 231 V6 and manual transmission, advertised at 28 mpg highway, 16 city, and 19 combined; and a Cutlass Supreme Brougham with an available 260 V8 and automatic transmission, advertised at 27 highway, 19 city, and 22 combined. These are manufacturer-advertised estimates for distinct cars and configurations, not independent modern tests and not figures for the larger 98 Regency.

  • Confirm the model year, engine, transmission, and equipment before comparing a mileage figure.
  • Check whether the number is an EPA estimate, a manufacturer advertisement, or an observed result from a particular test car.
  • Use the figure to choose what to investigate, then ask for actual fuel-use records or measure consumption over your own representative driving if the car is available.
  • Do not assume a well-maintained test vehicle and a decades-old example in unknown condition will perform alike.

The EPA’s 1978 guide offers a useful reminder about the limits of even standardized estimates: it tested well-maintained vehicles under controlled conditions and noted that individual driving could differ. Its report that over half of surveyed drivers were within 2 mpg of estimates, while about 10 percent were more than 5 mpg away, is a description of surveyed drivers in that period—not a forecast for your route or for a vehicle that has aged for decades.

If the seller has records, look for a meaningful series of actual fuel-use figures rather than relying on a single claim. If there are no records, keep the historical comparisons in perspective and plan to learn the car’s consumption under your own driving. None of the cited period numbers supplies a current cost-per-mile figure, because fuel use, present fuel prices, repair needs, and the vehicle’s condition all matter.

How to judge whether an example can be affordable to own

There is no supported current price or cost-per-mile winner among these models. Use a specific-car comparison: a lower purchase price or an attractive period mileage number cannot compensate automatically for condition problems, unavailable parts, or repairs that make the car unsuitable for your budget.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the exact car. Record its model year, body style, trim, engine, and transmission. This matters especially for the 1977–1984 rear-wheel-drive 98 versus the smaller 1985 redesign, and for the distinct 1978 Oldsmobile configurations advertised with different engines and transmissions.
  2. Inspect the structure and condition. Check for rust and structural damage, and have an independent mechanic inspect the car before purchase. The evidence does not establish a model-specific reliability or safety winner, so condition must be evaluated on the individual vehicle.
  3. Test the comfort you actually want. Drive it at highway speed where legal and practical. Pay attention to ride, noise, seat condition and support, and whether the cabin and trunk meet your needs. A model’s luxury tier or period description cannot tell you whether this particular car remains comfortable.
  4. Price the known work. Turn inspection findings into a written list of needed repairs and get local estimates for parts and labor. Ask suppliers and repair shops about the exact year and configuration rather than assuming a general parts-availability statement applies where you live.
  5. Check fuel use on the car in front of you. If the seller has credible records, review them; otherwise, treat historic figures as context. A representative drive or a fuel-use log after purchase is more useful for your own budget than applying one period test number to a different engine or vehicle condition.
  6. Compare total purchase-and-repair exposure. Compare the asking price plus inspection findings and foreseeable work across the candidates. No present-day market prices or comparable maintenance totals are established here, so obtain current local figures before choosing.

Use the same questions for every car on your shortlist. If one seller provides a detailed inspection and service records and another offers only a low asking price, those are not equal bases for comparison. Put the actual asking price beside the inspection findings and local estimates for needed parts and labor. This is more useful than comparing a historic new-car sticker price, an old advertisement’s mileage claim, or an unverified assertion that a model is cheap to maintain.

Parts availability deserves the same local check as repair pricing. The classic-car account’s comments about Cadillac parts and surviving Oldsmobile 98 examples are general observations; they do not confirm that the part you need is in stock nearby or that a shop will take on the repair. Call local suppliers and repairers with the exact year and configuration. If you cannot confirm access for a known repair, treat that uncertainty as part of the ownership decision.

Practical shortlist by priority

Your priority Candidate to investigate Evidence-based reason What remains to verify
Period test mileage lead Buick Electra The tested 1985 Electra returned about 21 mpg overall in the cited comparison. Exact test-car configuration, condition, and actual fuel use of the car for sale.
Rear-drive Oldsmobile luxury sedan Oldsmobile 98 Regency, 1977–1984 Documented rear-wheel-drive generation; surviving examples were described as readily available. Condition, engine, local parts and service access; be especially cautious about the turbodiesel the source characterizes as fragile.
Traditional large rear-drive car Mercury Grand Marquis or Ford LTD Crown Victoria The 1985 report identifies them as twins and as traditional large rear-drive cars. Exact year and powertrain, condition, fuel use, and repair costs.
Smaller-than-full-size comfort comparison Chrysler Fifth Avenue The report describes it as a rear-drive medium-sized sedan; its tested example returned about 17 mpg overall. Whether its actual cabin and trunk space suit you, and the condition and cost of the individual car.
Cadillac prestige-class sedan Fleetwood Brougham or DeVille Cadillac models occupied Consumer Guide’s 1970 Prestige group; a later Fleetwood-named saloon continued through 1992 after the 1987 designation change. Exact model identity, local parts availability, repair access, and vehicle condition.

Think of this as a shortlist for inspection rather than a ranked list of bargains. The Electra has the period mileage lead among the tested cars cited, while the 98 provides a defined rear-drive generation to seek out. The Cadillac, Ford and Mercury options, and the medium-sized Fifth Avenue, each answer a different size or period-classification question. The sources do not provide a current price comparison that could settle which one is the best value today.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which classic American luxury sedan gets the best gas mileage?

In the January 1985 Consumer Reports comparison reproduced by Mike’s Cars, the tested Buick Electra returned about 21 mpg overall, compared with about 17 mpg for the tested Mercury Grand Marquis and Chrysler Fifth Avenue. Those are observations for specific test cars, not guaranteed results for every model year or surviving example.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the 1985 Buick Electra a guaranteed 21-mpg car?

No. The 21-mpg figure is for the Electra tested in the 1985 comparison. Engine, transmission, equipment, condition, and driving all matter, so verify the configuration and actual fuel use of the car you are considering.

Which Oldsmobile 98 is rear-wheel drive?

The 1977–1984 Oldsmobile 98 Regency generation is described as rear-wheel drive. The 98 became a smaller front-wheel-drive model in 1985, so check the year and drivetrain rather than assuming all 98s are the same.

Is an Oldsmobile 98 turbodiesel a low-cost choice?

Fuel type alone does not establish low ownership cost. A turbodiesel V8 joined the 98 range during the 1978 model year, and Classic & Sports Car characterizes it as fragile. Have the individual car inspected and price its repair needs locally before deciding.

Are parts cheap and easy to find for these classic sedans?

Classic & Sports Car describes Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham and DeVille parts as reasonably easy to find and cheap, and describes surviving 98 examples as readily available. These are general observations, not guarantees of local stock, fitment, repair access, or present-day prices. Check with local suppliers and shops for the exact car.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the Chrysler Fifth Avenue count as a full-size sedan?

The January 1985 report describes it as a rear-wheel-drive, dressed-up medium-sized Dodge Diplomat or Plymouth Gran Fury, rather than a full-size car. Check the specific car’s cabin and trunk in person to see whether the space suits your needs.

The Bottom Line

The 1985 tested Buick Electra is the mileage lead in this small period comparison, not a proven modern ownership-cost winner. Compare exact year and powertrain, inspect the individual car, test its highway comfort, and get local estimates for parts and repairs before buying. Period prices and mpg figures provide historical context; the condition and costs of the car in front of you should decide the purchase.
