Before choosing one, confirm compatibility for your exact make, model, year, engine, and the readings you want. No single gauge is guaranteed to show every parameter on every car.
What a car multi-gauge does
An aftermarket OBD-II multi-gauge presents selected live vehicle data as dashboard-style readings. NHTSA described the ScanGauge II as a user-installed digital multi-gauge, trip computer, and scan tool that processes OBD-II data streams into a virtual gauge format. That 2009 report is a historical description of the product category, not evidence of current product performance: NHTSA report DOT HS 811 092.
A display can only show data available from the vehicle and supported by the device and its setup. Some readings may require an additional sensor or accessory. “Performance monitoring” means observing readings; it does not by itself mean the gauge can tune the vehicle or improve its performance.
Three ways to display vehicle data
| Approach | Documented example | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Dedicated OBD-II display | Edge Insight CTS3: Edge describes customizable touchscreen layouts, readings such as boost, EGT, RPM, and transmission temperature, performance tests, and accessory expansion. These are manufacturer-described features, not independent test results. Edge product page. | Vehicle and parameter support, screen readability, alerts, and any extra sensors or accessories. |
| Phone-based OBD-II system | AutoMeter DashLink II: AutoMeter’s catalog describes an OBD-II module used with an iOS or Android device, with customizable display, logging, and diagnostic functions. AutoMeter catalog. | Phone compatibility, mounting and visibility, connection setup, and whether the logging features meet your needs. |
| Vehicle-specific gauge | P3 Gauges publishes installation guidance organized around vehicle platforms and advises checking operation before final installation. P3 Config & Install Guide. | Exact platform fit, installation steps, available readings, and sensor requirements. |
How to choose a multi-gauge for your car
- List the readings you actually want. Identify specific parameters—such as boost, EGT, RPM, or transmission temperature—rather than relying on a broad promise of “dozens” of readings.
- Check your exact vehicle configuration. Compare your make, model, year, and engine with current manufacturer compatibility information, then verify that each desired parameter is supported. Edge describes CTS3 coverage as applying to “most” 1996-and-newer OBD-II vehicles; that is not a guarantee for an individual vehicle.
- Choose the display and connection style. A dedicated unit supplies its own screen; a phone-based setup relies on a compatible mobile device and a suitable mount; a vehicle-specific gauge may offer platform-oriented installation. Consider whether the display will be easy to see in your intended location.
- Check for extra setup requirements. Ask whether your chosen readings need sensors or accessories beyond the OBD-II connection, and whether you want alerts, logging, diagnostic functions, or performance tests.
- Follow the product’s installation guidance and verify operation. For a vehicle-specific installation, use the instructions for your platform and confirm the gauge works before completing final installation, as P3’s guide advises.
What the feature claims do—and do not—establish
Edge’s product description says the Insight+ uses plug-and-play installation through the OBD-II port with no wiring required, and describes real-time readings including boost, EGTs, regen cycles, RPM, rail pressure, fluid temperatures, and other parameters on a 5-inch full-color capacitive touchscreen with auto-dimming. Those are Edge’s product claims. They do not establish that every listed reading is available on every vehicle, nor do they represent independent testing.
