Lifters transfer camshaft movement to the valves; changing them does not guarantee a specific horsepower gain. Before buying, confirm the exact engine and camshaft specifications, then match the lifter type and any required retention parts.
What do engine lifters do?
A lifter, also called a tappet, follows a camshaft lobe and transfers its movement into the valvetrain. In an overhead-valve (OHV) pushrod engine, that movement typically travels through pushrods and rocker arms to open the valves. In an overhead-cam (OHC) engine, the related component may instead be a hydraulic lash adjuster or a direct-acting bucket tappet; these are not generic pushrod lifters, and their dimensions and application specifications matter.
The engine’s original design and camshaft specification determine which components fit and work correctly. US Seal Inc.’s Valve Lifter Technical Guide puts it plainly: “OEM specification determines lifter type.”
What’s the difference between hydraulic and solid lifters?
| Type | How it manages clearance | Service consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Hydraulic | Oil pressure acts on an internal plunger to take up valve-train clearance automatically. | Confirm the specified lifter and operating requirements for the engine and camshaft. |
| Solid (mechanical) | Clearance is set as a specified valve lash rather than taken up by a hydraulic plunger. | Set and periodically check lash to the engine or camshaft manufacturer’s specification. |
Hydraulic designs generally reduce routine lash adjustment, while solid lifters require a specified clearance and periodic checks. Neither is a universal upgrade over the other: use the type called for by the camshaft and engine specifications. The Hot Rod lifter explainer also describes the distinctions between mechanical and hydraulic designs.

Flat tappet vs. roller lifters
| Design | Cam contact | Fitment considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Flat tappet | A slightly crowned lifter face slides against the cam lobe and rotates during operation. | The lifter and cam must be a compatible set and match the engine application. |
| Roller | A small wheel rolls against the cam lobe. | The design needs an appropriate anti-rotation arrangement, such as a specified dog-bone, link-bar, or tray setup. |
Flat tappet and roller systems use different contact arrangements and can be paired with different cam profiles. That does not establish a guaranteed power increase or a universal advantage for one design. A roller conversion is not a matter of buying lifters alone: the engine’s guides or retention arrangement and the rest of the valvetrain must be suitable. Follow the camshaft and engine manufacturer’s specifications.
What causes lifter tick?
A ticking sound is a clue, not a diagnosis. A hydraulic lifter may not have filled with oil, may leak down, or may have a sticking plunger. Oil-delivery problems can also affect operation. Other possibilities include worn lifter faces or cam lobes, failed rollers, and unrelated valvetrain faults.

- Replaces Part Numbers: 5184377AG, 5184378AG, 5184379AG, 5184380AG, 5184296AH, 5184332AA, 5184562AC, 5184331AC, 5184595AE, 5184596AE. The 66pcs full kit includes 24 rocker arms, 24 valve lifters, camshaft components, and required gaskets — everything needed for a complete valvetrain overhaul, no extra parts required
- Premium Quality: The main body of the kit is made of high-strength alloy material, combined with cold forging technology, which can enhance the surface hardness of the rocker arm shaft and adapt to various working conditions
- Oil Circuit Optimization: Built in pressure oil channel design, which can still form an oil film under different conditions, reducing friction risks and further reducing wear
- Perfect Adaptation: Each set of components has been balanced and calibrated to avoid resonance during high-speed work, matching the precision assembly requirements of the engine
Check the oil supply and inspect the related components using the engine-specific service procedure rather than replacing lifters based on sound alone. The MasterTechPrep training explainer describes lifter fill, leak-down, sticking, and wear-related issues, and notes that a manual or special tool may be used for a leak-down check. The correct test and procedure vary by engine.
If lifters, pushrods, or rocker arms are being reused, keep wear-matched parts in their original positions and orientations. Mixing them can change how previously run-in contact surfaces meet.

How do I choose the right lifters for my engine?
- Identify the exact engine. Gather the vehicle’s year, make, and model, plus the engine code or displacement. Establish whether it is OHV or OHC; an OHC lash adjuster or bucket tappet is not interchangeable with a generic pushrod lifter.
- Identify the camshaft. Record the camshaft make, model, and specifications. If the cam is being replaced, use its manufacturer’s lifter requirements rather than choosing by vehicle description alone.
- Verify the lifter type and dimensions. Check the engine or camshaft manufacturer’s catalog for the required hydraulic or solid design, flat tappet or roller configuration, and exact application dimensions.
- Confirm roller retention parts where applicable. If the specification calls for a hydraulic roller, verify the required dog-bone, link-bar, tray, or other anti-rotation setup. Do not assume the lifters alone complete a conversion.
- Match the choice to the intended use. OEM street replacement, performance, and racing applications may have different design and maintenance requirements. Follow the relevant manufacturer’s specifications, including any lash checks or service procedures.
A recommendation cannot be made responsibly from “best lifters” alone. Without the engine and camshaft details, a generic list cannot establish fitment. The US Seal technical guide covers lifter types and application considerations; confirm the final part number against the exact engine and camshaft catalog.
