There was no single best car battery for 2022. The right replacement depended on the vehicle’s BCI group size, terminal position, battery chemistry, dimensions, cold-cranking requirement, and charging system. A more expensive battery—or one with a higher CCA number—was not automatically a better choice if it did not match the vehicle.
The recommendations below reflect battery tests and editorial picks available in 2022. Model availability, prices, and warranty terms may have changed, so use them as a historical buying guide rather than assuming every part number is still current.

How to choose the correct battery
- Find the required group size. Look in the owner’s manual, on the existing battery, or in a reputable vehicle-specific fitment catalog. Do not rely solely on a retailer’s “confirmed fit” badge.
- Confirm the terminal layout. A battery with the positive terminal on the wrong side can put the cable dangerously close to grounded metal, even if the case appears to fit.
- Match the battery type. If the vehicle was equipped with AGM, replace it with AGM unless the manufacturer specifically permits another technology. AGM batteries are designed for higher cycling demands, vibration resistance, and many start-stop systems.
- Compare the physical dimensions and hold-down. Verify length, width, height, base design, terminal style, and the vehicle’s retaining bracket. A loose battery can be damaged by vibration and may be unsafe in a collision.
- Meet or exceed the required ratings. Check CCA, reserve capacity, and—where listed—the manufacturer’s required amp-hour rating. Extra CCA cannot correct an incompatible battery.
- Check the production date and warranty. Prefer a battery that has not spent many months sitting in inventory. Consumer Reports’ buying guidance recommends a battery less than six months old, preferably around three months old.
- Check whether registration is required. Some vehicles, including certain BMW models, require the replacement battery to be electronically registered or coded so the charging system can manage it correctly.
Flooded lead-acid versus AGM
Flooded lead-acid batteries generally cost less and remain appropriate for many conventional vehicles. They are the normal choice when the manufacturer specifies a standard battery and the car does not have unusually high cycling or electrical demands.
AGM batteries hold their electrolyte in fiberglass mats. They are more resistant to vibration and leakage and are better suited to many start-stop vehicles and cars with substantial electrical loads. However, AGM is not automatically an upgrade for every car. It still has to fit the battery tray, terminal arrangement, hold-down, and charging system.

- ✅ Perfect Fit & Compatibility: BCI Group Size 47 (H5), 12V 60Ah, 680CCA, 100RC. Dimensions: 9.52" L x 6.89" W x 7.48" H. Terminal: Tapered terminal (Left negative (-), Right positive (+)). Ensure proper fit by comparing the size, terminal position, and CCA with your original battery. This ensures compatibility and avoids any fitment issues for your vehicle.
- ✅ Reliable Starting Power in All Conditions: Delivers 680 Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) for reliable engine starts, even in freezing weather. This automotive battery is built to perform consistently within a wide temperature range from -22°F to 158°F, withstanding short-term extremes from -40°F to 75°F, ensuring maximum performance no matter the weather.
- ✅ Advanced AGM Technology for High Performance: Specially designed for vehicles with start-stop technology and those requiring greater power, this AGM battery delivers up to 2X the cycle life of conventional batteries. With its high-density negative paste, it ensures improved conductivity, longer battery life, and faster recharge times. Maintenance-free design—no need to add liquid or water.
- ✅ Durable & Safe Design: This group 47 battery is 18X more vibration-resistant than standard batteries, ensuring a longer service life and reliable performance. Its leak-proof, non-spillable design offers enhanced safety, and the absence of free acid guarantees stable performance, preventing acid leakage and internal corrosion. Ideal for tough conditions.
- ✅ Not for Deep Cycle Applications: Please note that this is a starting battery and is not designed for deep-cycle applications such as solar or marine use. It is ideal for vehicles with higher electrical accessory loads or those that need a high CCA starting battery with enhanced cyclic performance. Verify that the battery type and specifications match your vehicle's requirements.
A vehicle originally equipped with AGM should generally receive an AGM replacement. Substituting a conventional flooded battery can reduce durability and may leave the charging and start-stop systems operating outside their intended design.
Battery specifications that matter
- BCI group size
- This identifies a battery’s general physical dimensions, terminal arrangement, and mounting characteristics. It is the first compatibility check, not merely a label for capacity.
- Cold-cranking amps (CCA)
- CCA measures the current a battery can deliver for 30 seconds at 0°F while maintaining at least 7.2 volts. It matters most in cold climates, but the battery must still meet the vehicle’s physical and electrical requirements.
- Cranking amps (CA)
- CA is measured at a warmer temperature than CCA. A large CA number should not be compared directly with a CCA number as though they were the same rating.
- Reserve capacity
- This indicates how long the battery can provide power if the engine is off or the charging system fails. Roughly 90 minutes is considered good and two hours better, although the vehicle manufacturer’s specification takes priority.
- Warranty
- Compare the free-replacement period, exclusions, seller eligibility, and whether coverage becomes prorated after the free-replacement period. A warranty may be rejected if the battery was bought from an unauthorized seller or used in an excluded application.
Common mistakes when buying a 2022 battery
Choosing the highest CCA
Higher CCA is not a substitute for correct fitment. It does not fix the wrong group size, terminal orientation, chemistry, hold-down, reserve capacity, or a failing alternator.
Assuming a group number guarantees fitment
Two batteries listed under the same group can still differ in terminal details, height, base configuration, or vehicle-specific requirements. Check clearance around the positive terminal and confirm that the factory retaining hardware fits.

Replacing AGM with a conventional battery
This is particularly risky in a start-stop vehicle. The car may demand frequent restarts and use a charging strategy designed for AGM technology.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTrusting an online fitment result without checking the manual
Car and Driver reported unreliable experiences with Amazon’s “Confirmed Fit” tool. Online catalogs are useful for narrowing the search, but the owner’s manual and an authoritative fitment source should settle the question.
Buying old shelf stock
A battery can be weak before installation if it has been stored too long or allowed to discharge. Inspect the date code, ask the seller to test it, and charge it when appropriate before installation.
