The right choice depends on the engine’s actual block and valvetrain, compression, heads and springs, transmission and converter, rear gearing, and intended use. Identify those details first; then compare only cams that fit the engine and the way you drive it.
What “stock 350” means matters
A stock 350 might be an original engine, a rebuild with factory-style parts, or a mostly standard engine with different heads, intake, compression, or transmission. Those combinations can need different cams. Before choosing a profile, confirm what is actually in the car rather than relying on the model year or a seller’s broad fitment label.
Identify the block and existing valvetrain
Chevrolet introduced roller cams in small-block applications in 1987, while earlier standard configurations are generally associated with flat-tappet cams. That is a useful clue, not proof: engine swaps and rebuilds can change the original configuration. COMP Cams outlines identifying features and hydraulic-roller block differences in its camshaft identification guide. Verify the block, cam type, lifters, and cam retention arrangement before ordering.
Record the engine combination
Find the compression ratio, cylinder-head type or casting, valve springs, rocker ratio, intake and exhaust setup, and whether the engine is internally stock. Chevrolet’s current 350 crate-engine listing provides one example specification: a 9.6:1-compression configuration with a hydraulic flat-tappet cam and 208° intake / 221° exhaust duration. Those figures describe that crate engine, not every factory or rebuilt 350.

Match the cam to how the car is used
Decide what matters most: low-speed response and smooth idle for daily driving, usable torque for towing, or a higher-rpm power range. Also account for the transmission, converter, rear gearing, and any need for steady idle vacuum. A cam’s published operating range and converter guidance apply to that cam and its stated application; they are not universal rules for all small-blocks.
- Daily street use: Prioritize the maker’s stated street range, idle behavior, and compatibility with your existing converter and gearing.
- Towing or heavy loads: Favor a combination intended to work in the engine’s low- and mid-range operating conditions, and confirm the maker’s guidance for your vehicle setup.
- Modified or higher-rpm use: Check that compression, head flow, springs, intake, exhaust, and supporting parts suit the profile. A cam alone cannot make an otherwise mismatched combination work well.
Published cams are comparison points, not universal picks
These examples illustrate why fitment and supporting parts matter. They are not a ranking for an unspecified stock 350.

| Cam | Published details | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| COMP Cams XE256H-10, part 12-234-2 | Hydraulic flat tappet; listed for Chevrolet 350 small-block applications. The listing gives 212°/218° duration at .050 inch and .447/.454-inch valve lift with 1.5-ratio rockers. | The listed dyno configuration was a 356-cubic-inch engine with 9.25:1 compression, aftermarket Dart heads, an Edelbrock intake, a Holley carburetor, and headers. Its results do not predict performance in a different, stock combination. Check the product listing for application and installation details. |
| COMP Cams 12-676-4 | 230/236 solid-flat street cam. COMP says it “will work with a stock converter, but best with a 2000 stall.” | This is a solid-flat profile, not a hydraulic-flat cam or a default choice when the engine’s valvetrain is unknown. Review its specific product listing and application requirements. |
Do not compare cams by advertised duration alone. The available manufacturer information does not establish one duration, lift, or lobe-separation target as best for every stock 350.
Check springs and the rest of the valvetrain
Replacing only the cam can leave the engine with springs that are not suited to the new lift and operating range. COMP Cams says factory springs are designed for stock, low-lift cams and advises using springs compatible with an aftermarket cam. Its technical guidance also says the suggested springs are required for its warranty. Check the exact cam and head instructions for spring installed height, travel and clearance, rocker geometry, and other requirements; see COMP’s valve-spring guidance.

A practical selection checklist
- Identify the engine: Record the block and model year, then verify the actual cam type and lifter arrangement.
- Document the combination: Establish compression, heads, springs, rocker ratio, intake, exhaust, and any internal changes.
- Describe the vehicle’s use: Note daily driving, towing, idle-vacuum needs, transmission, converter, and rear gearing.
- Shortlist compatible profiles: Compare the maker’s stated operating range, intended use, and required supporting parts—not just duration or lift.
- Confirm fitment before purchase: Check the exact block, lifters, springs, timing components, and installation requirements with the cam manufacturer’s application information.
For emissions-controlled vehicles, also verify applicable local requirements before changing the cam. The information above does not establish that any listed profile is legal for every vehicle or jurisdiction.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- The Legendary "Thumpr" Sound (107 LSA): The defining feature of this cam is the ultra-tight 107-degree Lobe Separation Angle. Why Buy It: This specific geometry creates early intake valve opening and long exhaust overlap, generating that highly desirable, rough, choppy, race-car idle that sounds far more aggressive than the cam actually drives.
