Best Bike Pedals for Your Riding Style: Flat vs. Clipless

Choose bike pedals by riding style, shoe compatibility and how you want your foot to connect. Here’s how flats, SPD and SPD-SL differ.

The best bike pedals depend on how you ride, what shoes you want to wear, and whether you prefer a free-moving foot or a mechanical connection. Flat pedals are easy to reposition and step off; clipless pedals hold a compatible cleated shoe in place. Neither is universally better, and the choice alone does not establish a measurable power gain.

Flat or clipless pedals?

Start with the shoe-to-pedal connection. Flat pedals provide an open platform, typically with pins that grip the shoe outsole. You can reposition or remove a foot without releasing a cleat. Clipless pedals connect a compatible cleated shoe to the pedal; to get out, you release the cleat using the system’s technique.

Both systems are used for mountain biking. Shimano describes flats as useful when quick foot repositioning matters and SPD as a consistent mechanical connection; rider comfort and discipline also shape the choice. These are different ways of interfacing with the bike, not proof that one makes every rider faster. REI’s overview likewise recommends starting with riding type and the control or maneuverability a rider wants (REI’s bicycle-pedal guide; Shimano’s MTB pedal guide).

  • Choose flats if you want to place a foot down or adjust its position without a cleat-release motion, or prefer ordinary compatible footwear over cleated shoes.
  • Consider clipless if you want a mechanical shoe-to-pedal connection and are willing to use compatible shoes and learn engagement and release.

Which pedal suits your riding style?

There is no established universal ranking across flat and clipless pedals, or across riding disciplines. The following examples reflect Shimano’s recommendations for its own lineup, not independent comparative test results.

Downhill or gravity, clipless Robust SPD SAINT PD-M821
Trail riding, flat Flat platform DEORE XT PD-M8240
Gravity riding, flat Flat platform SAINT PD-G8040

Shimano positions the XTR PD-M9220 for trail or enduro with a raised platform and wider shoe-pedal contact area intended to support stability and control. Its product page says it works with existing SPD cleats, while noting that cleat spacers may be required depending on the shoe model. Check the shoe and pedal instructions before assuming the setup fits as-is (Shimano PD-M9220 product details).

Choosing flat pedals

Compare platform size and shape, thickness, pin layout, grip with your chosen shoe, durability, and serviceability. A larger platform may be a useful direction for support, but dimensions and shape still need to suit your foot and riding. The shoe matters: a flat mountain-bike shoe’s outsole works with the pedal pins, so judge grip as a shoe-and-pedal combination rather than by pedal design alone.

Choosing clipless pedals

Match the pedal to the discipline and the support style you want. For mountain biking, Shimano’s guidance ranges from compact SPD pedals for XC to larger-platform SPD options for trail and enduro; it also lists robust clipless options for downhill. Confirm the cleat and shoe fit before buying rather than choosing by the pedal name alone.

SPD or SPD-SL: what is the difference?

SPD is a two-bolt clipless system commonly used off-road. Its cleat is often recessed into a compatible shoe sole, which makes walking more practical. SPD-SL is a three-bolt, road-oriented system with a broader pedal-and-cleat interface. The systems are not interchangeable just because both are clipless (Shimano’s pedals and cleats guide; Shimano’s SPD-SL overview).

Before purchasing a clipless setup, verify all three parts: the shoe’s mounting pattern, the cleat, and the pedal system. A two-bolt-only shoe should not be assumed to accept an SPD-SL cleat. Some shoes have two-bolt, three-bolt, or dual mounting patterns, but dual compatibility is not universal. Follow the pedal and cleat instructions for setup (Shimano’s cleat-use manual).

Are flat pedals better for beginners?

Flats can be a straightforward starting point because you can put a foot down without learning how to clip in and release. That does not make them a rule for every new rider: a beginner who prefers clipless can learn the system before taking it onto technical terrain.

What if I ride indoors or walk in my cycling shoes?

For indoor cycling, ask the studio which pedal system its bikes use before buying shoes or cleats. Confirm whether the bike uses SPD, SPD-SL, or another setup, then match the shoe’s mounting pattern and cleat accordingly.

If you expect to walk in your shoes, recessed SPD cleats are generally more practical than exposed road-style SPD-SL cleats. The relevant question is not just which pedal is on the bike, but whether the complete shoe-and-cleat combination suits both riding and walking.

Checklist before choosing

  • Decide whether you want a flat platform or a clipless shoe connection.
  • Match the pedal style to your riding: road, XC, trail/enduro, downhill/gravity, commuting, or indoor cycling.
  • For clipless, confirm the shoe mounting pattern, cleat system, and pedal compatibility.
  • Consider walking needs and how comfortable you are learning clipless engagement and release.
  • For flats, compare platform dimensions, pins, grip with the shoe outsole, durability, and serviceability.
  • Follow the exact pedal and cleat instructions for installation and setup; tool fit varies by pedal model.
