For securing two or more bikes to one fixed anchor, a long, independently rated chain is usually the most practical starting point. A chain-and-U-lock bundle adds flexibility, but can be heavy to carry. Cyclingnews names the Hiplok DXXL as its best e-bike lock for multiple bikes; its chain and U-lock together weigh nearly 6 kg, making it a more natural fit for home or fixed storage than an everyday commuting lock. The right choice depends on how many bikes you need to secure, the anchor, where you park and the requirements of your insurer.
What is the best bike lock for multiple bikes?
For several bikes locked to one suitable anchor, choose a substantial steel chain with enough usable length to pass through each frame and the anchor. A chain-and-U-lock set is another option when you want the chain’s reach and a U-lock you can use on its own. Neither arrangement is theft-proof: security also depends on the anchor, parking location, lock fit and the time the bikes are left unattended.
The clearest named multi-bike example in the sources is the Hiplok DXXL chain-and-U-lock bundle. Cyclingnews’ 2026 e-bike lock guide calls it “Best for multiple bikes.” That is an editorial product recommendation, not proof that it is the best choice for every rider or a controlled comparison of every multi-bike setup.
Hiplok DXXL: reach with a significant weight trade-off
Cyclingnews reports a 4,825 g chain and a 1,128 g U-lock, for a combined weight of nearly 6 kg. The guide gives a 14 mm chain and U-lock, three coded replaceable keys, and a Sold Secure Diamond rating. It describes the pieces as usable together or separately and notes that the loop-end links limit how easily the chain can be shortened. These specifications and the rating are reported by the review; check Sold Secure’s current listing for the exact model before relying on the certification.

#1 Best Overall
- Portable & Rugged: The Sportneer bike u lock is both portable and heavy-duty. It measures 7.76x5.02inches, with a thickness of 0.67inches/17mm, and weights 1.64lbs. Plus, its unique polygonal lock body design and silicone coating resist water, dust, and dirt, keeping your bike scratch-free and in tip-top shape.
- Easy to Install & Use: Equipped with a 5ft steel cable and a bracket, the bike lock can secure wheels, frames, or other bikes to posts, fences, or poles. Better yet, the bracket fits bike tubes with a diameter under 26mm/1.02inch-38mm/1.5inch, allowing you to lick your bike with ease.
- Boosted Security & Anti-Theft: Thanks to the zinc alloy lock core and alloy steel lock head, this bike U-lock can withstand hydraulic shear forces up to 12 tons. It‘s tough as nails, resisting cutting, sawing, smashing, and drilling to protect your bike from potential theft.
- Added Convenience and Peace-of-Mind: No more stress of being locked out if you lose your primary key. For extra peace of mind, we’ve included two bike lock keys so that you can carry one and keep the spare at home or in the office, ensuring you won‘t be stranded without access to your bike.
- Wide Applications: Use the bike locks alone or paired with the steel cable--you make the choice! It‘s perfect for securing bicycles, children’s bikes, electric bikes, ladders, barbecue grills, sports equipment, lawnmowers, gates, and more. Make sure to check the size to ensure a perfect fit.
The weight and configuration make the set a candidate for securing several bikes at home or at another fixed storage location. If you will carry a lock throughout the day, consider whether that nearly 6 kg combined load is practical.
Chain, U-lock or cable: which setup fits?
| Option | Best suited to | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Long chain | Several frames, a wide or awkward anchor, or fixed storage | Reach and flexibility come with added weight; check the usable length and rating for the exact model. |
| Chain-and-U-lock bundle | A multi-bike setup where you also want a U-lock that can be used separately | More configurations, but the combined load can be substantial; the Hiplok DXXL set weighs nearly 6 kg according to Cyclingnews’ 2026 guide. |
| Hardened-steel U-lock | Locking a frame to a compatible rack when a compact lock is preferable | May not reach several frames or a large anchor as readily as a chain. The City of Toronto recommends hardened-steel U-locks and says they deter theft better than cable locks. |
| Cable used as a secondary loop | Adding coverage for a wheel alongside a primary lock | Do not rely on a cable as the only lock. Toronto’s example uses one to supplement a U-lock. |
| Indoor bike room or individual locker | Long-term or overnight parking where the facility is available | Requires access to suitable secure storage. |
How to secure several bikes to one rack
- Choose a suitable anchor. Use a rack fixed to the ground or a wall. Toronto recommends racks with at least two points of contact so the frame and wheels can be secured together; it considers trees, sign poles and fences less secure than an anchored rack.
- Arrange the bikes within the chain’s reach. Bring them close enough to the rack that the chain can pass through every frame and close around the anchor without leaving excessive slack. Confirm the usable length against the actual rack and bike arrangement before relying on it.
- Secure each frame. Where the chain allows, pass it through each bike’s rear triangle and a wheel, then around the fixed anchor. Check that neither the bikes nor the closed lock can be lifted free. This is practical routing guidance, not a guarantee against theft.
- Cover any wheel the main lock cannot reach. Add a secondary lock or cable for an uncovered wheel; Toronto describes a cable as a supplement to a U-lock.
- Choose the parking location carefully. Prefer visible, well-lit, well-travelled locations where possible. For long-duration or overnight parking, Toronto recommends an individual bike locker or indoor bike room when available.
Check ratings, fit and insurance requirements
Compare more than a rating label. Confirm the exact model’s current independent certification, whether its length and shape fit your bikes and anchor, and whether you can manage its weight. Sold Secure says its product range changes monthly, so search its current catalogue for the precise model rather than relying on a brand statement or an older catalogue. Its 2025 catalogue, for example, listed the BTWIN LOCK C900M as Pedal Cycle Silver; that dated entry is not a substitute for checking the live listing.

Ask your insurer which lock and rating it requires for your particular policy. The sources do not establish one universal rating threshold or insurance rule, and municipal parking guidance is not an insurer standard.

A strong lock cannot compensate for an unsuitable anchor or an exposed parking spot. Toronto’s advice is to use an anchored rack, favour visible and well-travelled locations, and use a more secure facility for overnight or longer parking where possible. The city states: “If you must park your bicycle for a longer period of time or overnight, it is best practice to use a more secure facility, such as individual bike lockers or indoor bike rooms.” This is City of Toronto guidance, not a universal local requirement.
