There is no single best splice for every automotive wire. Follow the vehicle- and circuit-specific service procedure first. If it permits a crimp repair, a correctly sized splice made with its matching crimp tool and sealed as specified is a sound general approach. Solder is acceptable in some procedures, but only within their stated wire-size and location limits.
Choose the method the vehicle procedure allows
Check the wiring diagram and repair instructions for the exact vehicle, model year and circuit before cutting or joining a wire. The allowed method can depend on wire gauge, location and circuit type. The cited procedures illustrate why one technique cannot be treated as universal: International specifies a crimp method for 10–22 AWG wires of like diameter, while its solder method is limited to 16 AWG and smaller. Ford’s 2021 model-year security/remote-start installation procedure permits crimping or a two-wire solder splice for 16–22 AWG, and restricts its solder-tap method to interior use. Chrysler directs technicians to use the wire gauge specified in the service manual wiring diagram or its substitution chart. Do not choose a connector based only on appearance: match its size and construction to the conductor, and confirm the repair is allowed for that circuit. Mopar wiring repair

How to make a permitted crimp splice
- Make the circuit safe. Disconnect the battery ground or negative terminal as directed by the vehicle’s service instructions. Observe any circuit-specific precautions.
- Use the specified wire and connector. Confirm the conductor gauge and select a splice and crimp tool intended for that wire size. The International procedure describes joining wires of like diameter.
- Strip without damaging strands. Use the strip length specified by the procedure or connector instructions. Avoid cutting or nicking strands; Ford instructs the installer to strip the wire again if strands are cut during its procedure.
- Insert and crimp fully. Put the conductors fully into the splice. Use the matching crimp chamber and complete the tool’s ratchet cycle where specified. Follow the connector and vehicle instructions rather than improvising a crimp shape.
- Check the joint. International calls for a gentle tug on the wires and a continuity check. Ford also instructs the installer to inspect the completed crimp.
- Seal and support it. Place the specified heat-shrink tubing over the repair and heat it as directed until the seal forms; the cited procedures describe adhesive or hot melt flowing from both ends. Ford cautions that its procedure requires a shielded heat gun. Secure and route the harness to prevent chafing or trapping.
- Restore power and test. Reconnect the battery as directed, then verify the affected circuit or system operates correctly.
If the vehicle procedure permits solder
Use solder only where the circuit-specific instructions allow it, and stay within their wire-size and location restrictions. The cited International and Ford procedures specify rosin-type solder; Ford describes mildly activated rosin solder, and neither calls for acid-core solder. Follow the specified joint method, insulation and sealing steps, and allow the joint to cool before moving wires when instructed. Do not substitute a solder tap for a two-wire splice simply because it is easier to fit.
Take extra care with SRS wiring
Airbag and other supplemental restraint system wiring is safety-critical. Do not apply a generic crimp-or-solder rule to it. A GM bulletin dated April 2016 for a particular seat/SIR repair requires correct wire-pair identification, crimping and soldering repair clips, a butane-fueled iron, and restoration and checking of the SIR system. It warns that electrically powered soldering equipment could induce voltage and cause deployment or component damage in that specified circuit. Materials and final checks
- Automotive splice connectors sized for the actual conductor, plus the matching crimp tool if crimping is permitted.
- Adhesive-lined heat-shrink tubing when required by the repair instructions.
- A way to verify circuit continuity and function after repair.
- Harness routing and securement that prevent chafing, pinching or contact with moving or hot parts.
Verify that any connector is suitable for the wire gauge and the circuit’s environment. The cited documents do not provide comparative splice-failure statistics or prove a universal best method. The Ford procedure is for a 2021 model-year installation; the GM bulletin is dated April 2016 and addresses a particular repair. Neither it nor the other cited procedures replaces the current, exact vehicle service information.
