There is no single best American hybrid for every driver. If you mean hybrids sold by U.S.-based automakers, the current candidates include the Honda Civic Sedan Hybrid and Ford’s Escape Plug-In Hybrid, F-150 PowerBoost Hybrid, and Maverick Hybrid; if you mean vehicles assembled in the United States, verify the exact model year and configuration before deciding. The right choice depends first on whether you want a sedan, SUV, or pickup—and, for a plug-in hybrid, whether you can charge it regularly.

What “American hybrid” means here

“American” can refer to a brand headquartered in the United States, a vehicle sold in the U.S. market, or a vehicle assembled in the United States. These are different criteria. This guide compares U.S.-market models from American automakers alongside a U.S.-market Toyota and Honda example; it does not claim that every listed vehicle is assembled in the United States. If domestic assembly matters, check the exact model year and configuration rather than relying on the brand name. The editorial ranking of American-made hybrids from Car and Driver is a separate, publisher-specific ranking, not an official standard or an independent test for this guide.

Best options by vehicle type

Vehicle Type Published efficiency or electric range Best fit What to verify
Honda Civic Sedan Hybrid (2026) Conventional hybrid sedan Honda lists EPA estimates of 50 city / 47 highway / 49 combined mpg. Drivers who want a compact sedan and do not want to plug in. Confirm the rating for the specific trim and current vehicle label.
Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid Plug-in hybrid SUV Ford’s hybrid page displays an EPA-estimated 42 city / 35 highway / 38 combined mpg for a configuration; it should not be applied to every model or trim. Drivers seeking an SUV with a plug-in option and access to charging. Check the exact configuration’s EPA label, electric range, price, and availability.
Ford F-150 PowerBoost Hybrid Hybrid pickup Ford identifies it in its current hybrid lineup; the cited page’s displayed mpg figure is configuration-specific and is not a model-wide rating. Pickup shoppers who need to assess hybrid power alongside their work, towing, and payload requirements. Verify the exact truck configuration’s EPA rating, capability figures, price, and availability.
Ford Maverick Hybrid Compact hybrid pickup A model-level current EPA rating is not established here. Shoppers considering a smaller pickup rather than a sedan or SUV. Confirm model-year availability, configuration-specific EPA rating, price, and capability.
Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid Plug-in hybrid hatchback Toyota reports up to 52 mpg combined and up to 44 miles of EPA-estimated all-electric range; trim and configuration can affect the figures. Drivers who want a plug-in vehicle with a substantial stated electric range and still need hybrid operation. Check the exact trim’s EPA figures and whether regular charging suits your routine.

How to choose the right one

Choose by body style and daily use

  • Sedan: The 2026 Honda Civic Sedan Hybrid is the clearest conventional-hybrid sedan candidate in this group. Compare its passenger and cargo space with your needs, then confirm its rating by trim.
  • SUV: The Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid is the SUV option here, but its plug-in system changes the decision: consider charging access and electric range, not just gasoline mpg.
  • Pickup: The F-150 PowerBoost and Maverick Hybrid serve different size and capability needs. Compare the specific truck’s payload and towing requirements against its exact configuration; do not infer capability from the word “hybrid.”
  • Hatchback: The Prius Plug-in Hybrid is the option for drivers who want an electrified hatchback and can make use of charging.

Separate conventional hybrids from plug-in hybrids

A conventional hybrid does not require a charging routine. A plug-in hybrid adds the choice of charging for electric driving, so the useful comparison includes electric range and charging access as well as gasoline fuel economy. Toyota’s Prius figures are stated as “up to” values, and the applicable result depends on trim/configuration. For the Escape, the displayed Ford mpg figure applies to a configuration, not every trim; consult the exact vehicle’s EPA label before comparing.

Compare like with like

EPA fuel-economy numbers are configuration-specific estimates, not guarantees of what every driver will achieve. Compare the same model year and drivetrain, and check the rating for the trim or configuration you would actually buy. The 2026 Fuel Economy Guide is a reference for vehicle ratings; the window label for the specific vehicle is the relevant check at purchase.

What the broader fuel-economy figures do—and do not—tell you

The EPA’s 2025 Automotive Trends Report, published in February 2026, projected that hybrids would account for 19% of new vehicle production in model year 2025. That is a projection, not a confirmed final share. The report also gives model-year 2024 manufacturer fleet-level fuel-economy figures of 22.8 mpg for Stellantis, 22.9 mpg for GM, and 23.4 mpg for Ford. Those are fleet averages across manufacturers, not ratings for any individual hybrid. See the EPA report highlights and the full EPA Automotive Trends Report.

Before you buy

  • Decide what “American” means for you: U.S.-market brand, U.S.-based automaker, or U.S. assembly.
  • Identify the exact model year, trim, drivetrain, and configuration; confirm its EPA rating rather than using a broad brand or model claim.
  • For a plug-in hybrid, assess whether you can charge where you park and compare the applicable electric range as well as fuel economy.
  • For a pickup, match the exact configuration’s capability to your intended use.
  • Check current pricing, local availability, and incentives directly with the manufacturer or dealer; these vary and are not established by the figures above.
