A hatchback keeps a car-like footprint but adds a wide rear opening and folding seats; a crossover may suit bulky loads better if you want a taller, more upright cargo area. Before choosing, compare seats-up and seats-folded capacity—and check whether your actual gear fits through the opening and across the floor.
Which body style should you consider first?
Hatchbacks: more flexible space in a car-like shape
A hatchback is the natural first alternative if you want to stay close to a sedan’s driving format and overall footprint. Its rear liftgate makes the cargo area easier to access, and foldable rear seats let you trade passenger room for longer loads. For example, Honda lists 24.5 cu ft behind the rear seat in the 2026 Civic Hatchback, compared with 14.8 cu ft in the 2026 Civic Sedan. The Civic Hatchback has a 60/40 split-folding rear seatback, so you can fold one side for cargo while retaining a rear passenger seat on the other. Honda lists a hybrid option with 200 total-system horsepower on the 2026 Civic Hatchback specifications page; that figure is trim-specific and does not establish fuel economy or overall ownership value.

Compact crossovers: consider them for a taller cargo area
A compact crossover is worth comparing if you regularly carry taller objects or prefer a more upright loading position. Toyota’s comparison page lists the Corolla Cross at 24.0 cu ft with the rear seats up and 88.4 cu ft with the rear seats down. What should you check beyond cargo volume?
A capacity figure cannot tell you whether a stroller, instrument case, bike, or box will fit. Before you buy, compare these practical details on the exact trim you are considering:

- Seats-up and seats-folded capacity: Check both measurements, and make sure each vehicle’s figure describes the same seating configuration.
- Opening and cargo shape: Look at the width and height of the hatch opening, floor length, and width between the wheel wells. A large volume figure may not help if your item cannot pass through the opening.
- Loading height: Consider how high you must lift heavy or awkward items into the cargo area.
- Passenger-seat flexibility: A split-folding seatback can preserve a rear passenger place while carrying a longer load.
- Vehicle footprint and ride height: Consider parking and maneuverability as well as the taller loading position of a crossover.
- Powertrain needs: Compare the specific versions you would actually buy; a horsepower figure alone does not tell you fuel economy or total ownership value.
If possible, bring measurements of your largest regular cargo item to the dealership and test-fit it. Confirm the precise model year and trim: manufacturer pages may change, and stated capacities can use different measurement conventions.

Can a roof box solve occasional cargo needs?
A roof box can add room for occasional trip overflow, but it is not a substitute for enclosed interior cargo space. Honda lists a 13 cu ft short roof box for the 2026 Civic Hatchback accessory range and says its midsize box adds 3 cu ft, for 16 cu ft total. The same accessory information describes a Honda roof rack with a 154-pound maximum load capacity; Honda instructs owners to check the vehicle label, installation instructions, and owner’s manual. Those details apply to the described Honda accessories, not to every vehicle or roof box.
