The strongest documented candidate for airbag crash-data reset is a LAUNCH X-431 Android diagnostic device with the relevant function available for your vehicle. LAUNCH’s maintenance-information PDF describes a function to reset crash data and recycle an airbag ECU, but it does not establish support for every X-431 model or vehicle. Confirm coverage for your exact year, make, model, SRS module, and software before buying or attempting a reset.
What counts as an airbag crash-data reset tool?
These tools and services do different jobs. A crash-data reset or ECU-recycling function is not the same as reading or clearing ordinary SRS diagnostic trouble codes, and neither is the same as retrieving event data recorder (EDR) information. Treat the operation your vehicle needs—not a product’s broad “airbag” label—as the starting point.
- Crash-data reset: A specific function intended to address crash data stored in an SRS control module. Support depends on the vehicle, module, device, and software.
- Ordinary SRS code clearing: Reads or clears diagnostic trouble codes. A crash record may not be clearable as a routine fault; Autel community posts describe such cases, but they are anecdotal and not repair instructions (Autel discussion of a recorded crash).
- EDR retrieval: Retrieves event information from supported modules for investigation. It does not establish that crash records can be cleared or that a deployed restraint system is ready for service.

Why LAUNCH X-431 is the closest match for reset
Among the options documented here, LAUNCH is the one that directly describes a crash-data reset function. Its maintenance-information PDF says the function is used to reset airbag crash data to recycle an airbag ECU. That supports considering an X-431 device only when the precise function is listed for the specific application you need.
The PDF is from 2021 and does not provide a current vehicle-by-vehicle compatibility matrix. It therefore cannot answer whether a particular X-431 model, current software release, vehicle year, or SRS module is supported. Check current manufacturer coverage before purchase, and get confirmation for the exact application rather than relying on a generic claim that a scanner “supports airbags.”

When Bosch CDR is the right kind of tool
Bosch CDR is relevant when the job is retrieving EDR information, not resetting crash data. Bosch describes CDR as a retrieval product, and its 110-141 D2M kit page lists supported module categories including ACMs. Direct-to-module access can matter when vehicle electrical power or DLC access is compromised, but a D2M cable does not itself imply reset capability.
Plan for the documented setup requirements: Bosch says D2M kits require the CDR DLC Kit, and its CDR homepage states that the CDR DLC Base Kit requires separately sold CDR software and a Windows-based PC. Check Bosch’s current supported-vehicle and module information for the precise retrieval application.

How to verify a reset tool before buying
- Identify the job. Determine whether you need a crash-data reset, ordinary SRS fault diagnosis, or EDR retrieval. Do not treat those operations as interchangeable.
- Pin down the application. Record the vehicle year, make, model, and the SRS module involved. Ask the manufacturer or seller to verify that exact application and event condition.
- Confirm the complete setup. Verify the device family, software release, application or license requirements, operating-system requirements, and any vehicle-specific cable. A function documented for a product family does not prove it is included on every device.
- Check the workflow. Establish whether the job uses an in-vehicle diagnostic connection, direct-to-module EDR retrieval, or bench-file processing. These workflows are not substitutes for one another.
- Follow the vehicle’s repair procedure. Confirm the appropriate manufacturer repair information and complete the required restraint-system repairs before deciding whether reset or reprogramming is appropriate.
What a reset tool cannot establish
A reset function alone does not establish that a vehicle’s restraints have been repaired, that a module is suitable for reuse, or that a particular repair is approved. The sources cited here do not support a universal reset recommendation, comparative success rates, or numeric rankings. Choose based on verified application coverage and the correct operation, then follow the vehicle-specific repair procedure.
Autel forum discussions include questions about reprogramming an SRS module after a crash and why a module would not reset. One discussion concerns a specific 2008 Hyundai Sonata; its replies should not be generalized into a procedure for other vehicles (Autel Support Communities; specific crash-record discussion).
