There is no single best 2025 Subaru for every driver: the Crosstrek and Forester are the strongest all-around choices in the available review evidence, the Outback suits buyers who want a wagon with extra ground clearance, and the BRZ is the distinct choice for a sports car. The published evaluations below come from Consumer Reports, Car and Driver, and Edmunds—not from CarCody’s own documented 2025 test drives.
Which 2025 Subaru is right for you?
Start with body style and use, not a single overall ranking. The Crosstrek is a compact SUV for urban driving and outdoor trips; the Forester emphasizes passenger access, visibility, and room; the Outback is a wagon with standard all-wheel drive and elevated ground clearance; and the BRZ is a performance-oriented sports car rather than a crossover alternative.
| Model | Best fit | What the cited evaluations highlight |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 Crosstrek | Compact-SUV versatility, including city use and wilderness outings | Consumer Reports cites ride comfort, fuel economy, standard all-wheel drive, and high ground clearance. It named the Crosstrek a 2025 Top Pick; Car and Driver included it in its 2025 Editors’ Choice list. |
| 2025 Forester | Visibility, easy entry, and a roomy five-seat SUV | Consumer Reports highlights comfort over bumps, a quieter cabin, and more cargo space than the predecessor. Edmunds’ comparison praised visibility and physical controls but preferred the Honda CR-V for acceleration and refinement. |
| 2025 Outback | Wagon practicality with ground clearance for light off-road use | Consumer Reports’ reprint points to elevated ground clearance and standard all-wheel drive, and recommends the Limited trim. Car and Driver included it in its 2025 Editors’ Choice list. |
| 2025 BRZ | A sports-car experience rather than family-SUV utility | Subaru’s January 29, 2025 announcement lists the BRZ in Car and Driver’s Editors’ Choice category for affordable sports cars. |
2025 Subaru Crosstrek: the compact all-rounder
Consumer Reports’ April 2025 Top Picks describes the Crosstrek as capable of serving both urban touring and wilderness adventure. Its assessment calls out an excellent ride, good fuel economy, standard all-wheel drive, and high ground clearance. Consumer Reports selected it as a 2025 Top Pick, while Car and Driver also named it an Editors’ Choice in the compact-SUV category.
Engine specifications vary by trim: Consumer Reports identifies a 152-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder in the base trim and says higher versions use a different engine. Check the exact 2025 trim’s specifications before comparing power or fuel economy; the base-engine figure should not be applied to the whole lineup.

2025 Subaru Forester: access, visibility, and comfort
Consumer Reports’ April 2025 review of the redesigned Forester praises its roomy cabin, easy entry, visibility, and ability to smooth bumps. It also reports a quieter cabin and more cargo space than the prior model. In that publication’s 2025 Top Picks report, the gas Forester received an overall score of 93 and was listed at 29 mpg overall. Those are Consumer Reports’ model-year-specific figures, not a current EPA estimate or a hybrid result.
There is a useful counterpoint for shoppers who care about acceleration and polish on the road. Edmunds’ comparison, republished by the Associated Press, favored the Honda CR-V over the Forester for acceleration and driving refinement, while recognizing Subaru’s visibility and physical controls. The comparison concerned the Forester’s base engine; it should not be read as a hybrid test or as current EPA data.

2025 Subaru Outback: wagon utility and ground clearance
The Outback combines wagon form with elevated ground clearance and standard all-wheel drive, features Consumer Reports says help with light off-road duties. Its reprinted review recommends the Limited trim. Car and Driver included the Outback in its 2025 Editors’ Choice list as a station wagon.
Keep the model year in view when shopping: the Consumer Reports reprint said a new Outback was expected for model year 2026. The evaluations discussed here apply to the 2025 model, not automatically to a later redesign.

2025 Subaru BRZ: the performance choice
The BRZ belongs on this list for a different reason from the crossovers and wagon. Subaru of America’s January 29, 2025 announcement says Car and Driver selected it in the affordable-sports-car category of its Editors’ Choice awards. That supports considering the BRZ if performance-car character is the priority; it does not make it a direct substitute for the Crosstrek, Forester, or Outback if passenger or cargo utility is central.

These are separate award programs, not one head-to-head Subaru ranking. Consumer Reports’ 2025 Top Picks and Car and Driver’s Editors’ Choice use different approaches. Car and Driver says its selection considers instrumented testing, reviewer evaluations, a vehicle’s intended mission, and its position in its competitive segment. Consumer Reports’ April 2025 introduction says each vehicle on its list achieved exceptional results in road-test performance and safety.

Safety awards need the same model-year and market precision as performance figures. Subaru Corporation’s 2025 Integrated Report states that, as of May 2025, one 2025 model-year vehicle had received an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award and two had received Top Safety Pick awards; it also reports eight 2025 models with five-star overall U.S. NCAP ratings. These are Subaru-reported, dated counts, not a current award tally for every model or trim. Check the relevant safety agency’s listing for the exact model year, trim, and region before relying on an award.
