These are trail-oriented off-road motorcycles, not one-size-fits-all choices. Seat height, wheel size, weight and controls can help narrow the options; only an in-person fit check can show whether a bike suits a particular rider.
Three beginner-oriented dirt-bike options to compare
The figures below come from manufacturers, not independent testing. The Honda and Yamaha figures are tied to the model years shown; the Kawasaki information available here does not identify a model year or provide a complete specification table.
| Model | Engine and controls | Seat height | Published weight | Wheel details |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 Honda CRF125F, standard | 124.9cc air-cooled four-stroke; fuel injection; four-speed manual; electric and kick start | 29.1 in | 194 lb curb weight | Not stated in the cited specification summary |
| 2026 Honda CRF125F Big Wheel | 124.9cc air-cooled four-stroke; fuel injection; four-speed manual; electric and kick start | 30.9 in | 199 lb curb weight | Larger wheels than the standard version; Honda positions it for taller riders |
| 2025 Yamaha TT-R125LE | 124cc air-cooled four-stroke; carbureted; five-speed; electric start | 31.7 in | 198 lb wet weight | 19-in front, 16-in rear |
| Kawasaki KLX140R L | Complete engine, transmission and starting specifications not stated in the retrieved Kawasaki information | 31.5 in | Not stated | 19-in front, 16-in rear; 10 in ground clearance |
| Kawasaki KLX140R F | Complete engine, transmission and starting specifications not stated in the retrieved Kawasaki information | Not stated | Not stated | Full-size 21-in front, 18-in rear wheels |
Sources: Honda’s 2026 CRF125F specifications, Honda’s CRF125F feature page, Yamaha’s 2025 TT-R125LE specifications and Kawasaki’s KLX140R family information. Honda reports curb weight while Yamaha reports wet weight; because the labels are not identical, the numbers should not be treated as a perfectly standardized head-to-head comparison.
How to choose by fit, rather than engine size alone
Start with the actual seat height and trim
Even these small-displacement trail bikes span a notable seat-height range: the standard Honda is listed at 29.1 inches, while the Big Wheel Honda, Kawasaki KLX140R L and Yamaha TT-R125LE are listed at 30.9, 31.5 and 31.7 inches respectively. Kawasaki’s F variant has larger wheels, but the cited family information does not give its seat height. Check the exact trim rather than assuming models with similar engine sizes fit alike.
A seat-height figure cannot tell you whether you can comfortably balance, stop or move the bike. Sit on the specific motorcycle, in riding gear if possible, and assess whether you can manage it confidently. Honda itself says, “It’s important to have a bike sized right for your rider.” Honda Powersports
Consider wheel size and intended terrain
Wheel size is one visible difference between trims. The Yamaha TT-R125LE and Kawasaki KLX140R L use 19-inch front and 16-inch rear wheels; Kawasaki’s KLX140R F uses 21/18-inch wheels. Honda says the CRF125F Big Wheel’s larger wheels raise the seat and add ground clearance, and describes it as a better fit for taller riders. That makes the Big Wheel worth comparing for a taller rider, not an automatic upgrade for every beginner.

Compare controls and weight labels before deciding
The published configurations differ in ways a new rider should consider. The 2026 Honda CRF125F has a four-speed manual transmission and both electric and kick starting. Yamaha lists the 2025 TT-R125LE with a five-speed transmission and electric start. The cited Kawasaki information does not establish comparable engine, transmission or starter details, so confirm those in the specification sheet for the precise model year and trim.
Weight matters when moving or balancing a motorcycle, but compare like with like where possible. Honda’s 194-pound standard and 199-pound Big Wheel figures are curb weights; Yamaha’s 198-pound figure is wet weight. The manufacturers’ labels are different, and the available information does not establish that these measurements use an identical basis.

What this comparison does not establish
- It does not verify ten distinct current recommendations. The available specifications cover three model families, with separate Honda and Kawasaki trims.
- It does not establish that any model is safe or easy for every beginner, or suitable for a particular rider’s age, size, skill or terrain.
- It does not establish street legality. These products are presented as trail or off-road motorcycles; check the laws and riding-site rules where you plan to ride.
- It is not a complete specification comparison for Kawasaki. Confirm current-year specifications with Kawasaki or a dealer before comparing the KLX variants on weight, controls or seat height.
Check fit and local rules before buying
- Choose the exact model year and trim you are considering; do not treat a Big Wheel or full-size-wheel version as interchangeable with the smaller-wheel trim.
- Review the maker’s specifications for seat height, wheel sizes, weight and controls, noting whether weight is described as curb or wet.
- Arrange an in-person fit check on the actual bike. A published seat height is a comparison aid, not a substitute for assessing balance and control.
- Confirm where the motorcycle may legally be ridden and what requirements apply to the rider and riding location.
The Yamaha manufacturer product page lists a 2025 TT-R125LE starting price of $3,599 before destination and other charges; treat that as a dated, potentially changed figure and confirm the current price with a dealer. Yamaha dealer and inventory information
