AWD and 4WD can both send power to all four wheels, but the labels do not guarantee the same design or capability. In general, AWD systems often adjust power automatically for changing road conditions, while many 4WD vehicles offer driver-selected modes and may include low range for demanding, low-speed work. The right choice depends on the specific vehicle, its tires and your intended use—not the badge alone.
What is the difference between AWD and 4WD?
All-wheel drive (AWD) and four-wheel drive (4WD) are common labels for systems that can deliver power to all four wheels. They are not universal engineering definitions: the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) notes that the terms are sometimes used interchangeably. In broad usage, AWD is commonly associated with light-duty passenger vehicles and variable power delivery; 4WD is often associated with truck-based vehicles, selectable driveline modes or low-range gearing. Check the specific vehicle’s specifications and owner’s manual to find out what its system actually does.
How AWD commonly works
AWD systems vary. Subaru describes on-demand AWD as normally operating in two-wheel drive and sending power to the other axle when sensors detect a need. Its description of full-time AWD says some degree of power goes to both axles. These are general patterns in Subaru’s explanation, not a rule for every automaker or model.
For a model-specific example, the 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross owner’s manual says its Dynamic Torque Control AWD system automatically switches between front-wheel drive and AWD in response to conditions such as cornering, hills, starting, acceleration and slippery roads. Other AWD systems may behave differently.

How 4WD commonly works
Many 4WD vehicles let the driver select a mode, and some provide high and low ranges. Subaru notes that many vehicles operate in two-wheel drive when 4WD is not engaged. Controls, operating limits and whether a vehicle has low range vary by model, so do not assume every 4WD system works alike.
What does 4WD low mean?
Low range is a setting for demanding conditions and low-speed driving; it is not a synonym for AWD or a mode to use simply because a road is slippery. Toyota’s 2026 Land Cruiser manual describes H4 as the high-speed position for normal driving and L4 as the low-speed position for maximum power and traction. Its examples for L4 include steep hills, off-road driving and hard pulling in sand or mud. Those instructions apply to that Land Cruiser: consult the manual for the exact vehicle before selecting or shifting modes.

Is AWD or 4WD better for your driving?
Neither is the universal winner. Use your normal driving and the terrain you expect to encounter to narrow the choices, then compare the exact vehicles. A drivetrain label alone does not establish ground clearance, tire suitability, off-road capability or safe operating limits.
| What to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Everyday road use | Does the system adjust power automatically, or must the driver select a mode? What conditions does the owner’s manual describe? |
| Low-speed or off-road use | Does the vehicle have low range? What terrain and operating conditions does its manual support? |
| Vehicle capability | Are ground clearance, tires and other specifications suited to the terrain you plan to drive? |
| Winter driving | Are the tires appropriate for winter conditions and the vehicle? What tire fitment and pressure does the vehicle specify? |
| Fuel economy | How do EPA ratings compare for the exact models, engines and configurations you are considering? |
For changing paved-road conditions
AWD may be convenient if you want a system that responds automatically rather than requiring you to select a 4WD mode. The behavior is model-specific, so check the vehicle manual instead of assuming every AWD system engages in the same way.

For low-speed off-road work
A properly equipped 4WD vehicle with low range may be useful for steep terrain or difficult pulling. Not every vehicle labeled 4WD has the same equipment or limits, and an AWD crossover should not be assumed suitable for off-road driving. Compare the intended terrain with the vehicle’s specifications and manual.
Do AWD and 4WD help in winter?
Drive system is only one part of winter driving; it does not replace suitable tires. Subaru advises: “In order to achieve the best possible performance in winter weather, both AWD and 4WD cars should be equipped with snow tires.” Check the vehicle manual for tire fitment guidance. NHTSA says the correct tire pressure is listed on the Tire and Loading Information label at the driver-side door edge or in the owner’s manual. The 2026 Corolla Cross manual also warns that different tires can affect vehicle systems.

Does AWD use more fuel than 4WD?
Subaru gives a broad qualitative comparison for traditional gas-powered vehicles: it says AWD vehicles are less fuel-efficient than front-wheel-drive (FWD) and rear-wheel-drive (RWD) vehicles, but more efficient than 4WD vehicles. The explanation gives no universal fuel-economy figure, and this comparison should not be treated as a result for every model. For a purchase, compare EPA ratings for the specific vehicles, engines and configurations.
