Modern vehicles are larger overall, but there is no single useful “average car” that accurately describes width, length, and height. The clearest current fleet-level measure is EPA footprint—the space defined by a vehicle’s length and width. Average new-vehicle footprint grew from 48.9 square feet in model year 2008 to 51.5 square feet in 2024, a 5.4% increase. The EPA projects 51.8 square feet for model year 2025.

That trend does not mean every new car is longer, wider, and taller than every older car. It largely reflects a change in what people buy: smaller cars represent a smaller share of the new-vehicle market, while SUVs, pickups, truck-based SUVs, and other larger categories have become more prominent.

- A simple average of every nameplate gives each model equal weight.
- A sales-weighted average gives more influence to vehicles that sell in greater numbers.
- A sedan-only average looks very different from an average including SUVs, pickups, minivans, and full-size vans.
- An average of new vehicles differs from an average of every vehicle currently on the road.
For that reason, an exact number such as “the average car is 72 inches wide, 190 inches long, and 60 inches tall” can be misleading unless the source defines its vehicle sample and calculation. The better approach is to combine a fleet trend with representative vehicle specifications and then measure the particular vehicle and space that matter to you.
Are modern vehicles getting bigger?
Yes—if “bigger” means that the average new vehicle occupies more length-and-width space. The EPA’s Automotive Trends Report uses footprint, a measure based on vehicle length and width, to track this change.
| Model year | Average new-vehicle footprint | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| 2008 | 48.9 sq. ft. | Earlier fleet baseline |
| 2024 | 51.5 sq. ft. | 5.4% larger than the 2008 average |
| 2025 projection | 51.8 sq. ft. | Continued, modest increase |
The change from 48.9 to 51.5 square feet is about 2.6 additional square feet of footprint on average. That is not the same as adding 2.6 square feet to one specific vehicle, and it is not a measurement of the vehicle’s total three-dimensional volume. Footprint does not tell you how high a vehicle is, how much cargo volume it has, or whether it will fit under a particular garage door.

Why the average new vehicle feels much larger
The main explanation is market composition rather than uniform growth in every dimension. The EPA describes the increase in industry-wide footprint as larger than the increase within any single vehicle type because the market has shifted toward larger categories.
In practical terms, a driver who once saw mostly compact cars and midsize sedans may now encounter more compact and midsize SUVs, full-size pickups, truck-based SUVs, and other tall vehicles. Even if a current sedan has dimensions similar to an older sedan, the typical new vehicle around it may occupy more road and parking space.
This is why two statements can both be true:
- Modern vehicles are larger on average across the market.
- A particular modern car may be shorter, narrower, or lower than a particular older vehicle.
Current examples: sedan versus compact SUV
Official specifications show why “bigger” must be separated into length, width, and height. The following are representative 2025 examples, not an all-market average.

| Vehicle | Length | Width | Height |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 Toyota Camry | 193.5 in. | 72.4 in. | 56.9 in. |
| 2025 Toyota RAV4 | Approx. 180.9 in. | 73.0 in. | 67.0 in. |
| 2025 Honda CR-V | 184.8 in. | 73.5 in. | 66.2 in. |
The Camry is almost 13 inches longer than the listed RAV4, yet the RAV4 is about 10 inches taller and slightly wider. The CR-V is also shorter than the Camry but taller and wider. A compact SUV can therefore create more door, roof, and overhead-clearance problems even when it takes up less front-to-back space than a sedan.

As another reference point, a NHTSA compact-SUV study reported an average overall width of about 175 centimeters, or 68.9 inches, for its defined generic compact-SUV model. That is useful historical and research context, but it should not be treated as the current U.S. average: the study used a defined sample and older vehicle data.
Average car width: what the number really means
Manufacturer specifications generally distinguish a vehicle’s body width from its mirror-to-mirror width. For comparisons, use overall body width excluding mirrors unless the source explicitly says otherwise.
Body width is the dimension most relevant to the vehicle’s metal body and many parking-stall comparisons. But it is not always the width a driver needs in daily use. Actual space requirements can increase because of:
- side mirrors, especially when they are extended;
- running boards or side steps on pickups and SUVs;
- roof accessories or other protruding equipment;
- open doors and the room needed for passengers to enter and exit;
- the clearance required to walk between the vehicle and a wall or another vehicle.
For example, a garage that is technically wider than the vehicle body may still be uncomfortable if the driver must squeeze through a narrow gap or cannot open the doors far enough to load children or cargo.
Average car length: the front-to-back problem
Length determines whether a vehicle fits in a garage, parking stall, or confined driveway. It also determines how much room remains for a closed garage door, shelves, a workbench, bicycles, or storage behind the vehicle.

- [4 measuring methods and safety]: Digital calipers can be used to measure inner and outer diameters, depths and steps. The pins of the caliper are made of plastic, so there is no short circuit when measuring the battery or inside. Contact with the positive and negative poles. The safety is higher than that of metal calipers.
- [Measurement accuracy]: measurement range: 0-6"/0-150mm; resolution: 0.01"/0.1mm; accuracy: ±0.2mm/0.01. A perfect and accurate caliper measuring tool, suitable for home/jewelry/DIY measurement, please pay attention. This caliper is not suitable for professionals with high technical accuracy.
- [Inch/mm conversion]: Use Simhevn digital caliper to switch freely between inches and millimeters. The switching function of the two units can meet different needs. It is more convenient and widely used for measuring the value you want.
- [LCD and automatic shutdown]: High-quality and trustworthy digital calipers, LCD display screen reading is more convenient, quick and easy to get accurate results, open automatically turn on, and automatically turn off after 5 minutes of use. It is powered by a battery and includes a pre-installed battery and a spare battery.
- [Zero reset function]: Intelligent design, you can easily reset to zero by pressing the "Zero" button at any position of the measurement, and start a new measurement. It is very suitable for differential measurement, convenient for measurement, and easy to carry.
Published length may not include every item attached to the vehicle. When checking a real fit, account for a fixed trailer hitch, spare tire, rear-mounted rack, bike carrier, or other equipment. A vehicle that fits on paper can use up the remaining space once those accessories are installed.
Full-size pickups demonstrate why a single “average truck length” is particularly unhelpful. Ford specification materials show F-150 examples ranging from roughly 209.3 to 250.5 inches long, depending heavily on cab, bed, and configuration. The cited examples are about 79.9 inches wide excluding mirrors. A short-cab, short-bed pickup and a crew-cab, long-bed pickup can therefore differ by more than three feet in length while sharing the same model family.
Average car height: the overlooked clearance measurement
Height matters whenever the vehicle passes under or opens toward something above it. Check it for:
- garage doors and door mechanisms;
- parking garages and low structural beams;
- vehicle lifts;
- roof rails, crossbars, and cargo boxes;
- antennas and other roof-mounted equipment;
- an open liftgate or hatch near a low ceiling.
The Camry and RAV4 comparison makes the difference clear: the listed 2025 Camry is 56.9 inches high, while the RAV4 is 67.0 inches high. That 10.1-inch difference can matter far more in a garage than the RAV4’s shorter overall length.
Do not assume the height printed in a specification sheet is the maximum height of your finished vehicle. Roof rails, crossbars, a cargo box, antenna, suspension changes, or other accessories can add clearance requirements. Measure the vehicle as it will actually be used.
How to check whether your vehicle will fit in a garage
Do not use a generic average as a substitute for measuring. Check both the vehicle and the garage, and compare like with like.

Measure the vehicle
- Body width: record the manufacturer’s overall width and confirm whether mirrors are excluded.
- Mirror-to-mirror width: measure with the mirrors in the position you normally use to enter the garage.
- Overall length: include any hitch, spare tire, rack, or other permanently attached equipment.
- Maximum height: include roof rails, crossbars, cargo boxes, antennas, and other additions.
- Liftgate clearance: if you load cargo indoors, check the height and rear space needed with the hatch or liftgate open.
Measure the garage
- Measure the garage-door opening width, not just the outside wall width.
- Measure the opening height and the lowest overhead obstruction.
- Measure interior width at the narrowest point, including shelving, posts, storage, and door tracks.
- Measure the usable length to the closed garage door, wall, shelves, and workbench.
- Allow room to open the doors and walk around the vehicle.
- Check the approach angle and driveway width if the vehicle must turn into the garage.
Compare the measurements with a margin rather than aiming for a zero-clearance fit. The required margin depends on how precisely you can enter, whether mirrors must remain extended, and how much access you need around the parked vehicle. A vehicle that technically fits may not be a practical fit.
Can a garage laser parking aid help?
A garage laser parking aid can help with one specific problem: stopping the vehicle in the same front-to-back position every time. LiftMaster describes a system that projects a beam along the vehicle and indicates when to stop. Product documentation hosted by Amazon describes setting the vehicle in the desired position, aiming the beam at a visible dashboard or hood reference point, and using that reference for repeatable parking.
This can preserve the few inches needed to close the garage door or leave room behind the vehicle. It is a positioning aid, not a space-expansion device. It cannot:
- make a narrow garage wider;
- provide the side clearance needed to open doors;
- solve a low garage-door or ceiling problem;
- account automatically for a new roof box, hitch rack, or different vehicle;
- replace measuring the actual vehicle and garage.
If your vehicle already fits but you regularly stop too far forward or backward, this is a sensible accessory category to consider. Set it only after confirming that the vehicle’s width, height, and required walking and door-opening space are adequate.
What has changed most: dimensions or vehicle mix?
For the new-vehicle market as a whole, the strongest evidence points to both a larger footprint and a different mix of body styles. The increase is not proof that every model has expanded equally in all three dimensions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe most noticeable change for many drivers is the growing prevalence of vehicles that are taller or wider in practical use: SUVs with higher rooflines, pickups with large bodies and mirrors, and vehicles with running boards or substantial accessories. That changes parking-stall spacing, garage usability, visibility around neighboring vehicles, and the amount of room needed to open a door—even when the length difference is modest.

Bottom line
Modern new vehicles are getting larger in the market-wide sense. EPA data places average new-vehicle footprint at 51.5 square feet for 2024, up from 48.9 square feet in 2008, with 51.8 square feet projected for 2025. The increase is driven substantially by the shift toward SUVs, pickups, and other larger categories.
But there is no single honest “average car” height, width, and length that applies to every buyer. Use fleet footprint data to understand the trend, official specifications to compare body styles, and your own measurements to determine whether a vehicle fits a garage or parking space. Width, length, and height create different problems—and a vehicle can be smaller in one dimension while being larger in another.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does EPA vehicle footprint mean?
EPA footprint measures length-and-width space, not complete vehicle volume or height. It is useful for tracking how much road and parking space the average new vehicle occupies, but it cannot answer whether a vehicle will clear a garage roof or door.
Are SUVs always longer than sedans?
No. A current compact SUV can be shorter than a midsize sedan while being taller and slightly wider. For example, the listed 2025 RAV4 is shorter than the 2025 Camry but about 10 inches taller.
What dimensions should I measure before buying a vehicle for my garage?
Measure body width, mirror-to-mirror width, total length with fixed accessories, maximum equipped height, garage-door opening dimensions, interior width at the narrowest point, and usable front-to-back space. Also allow room to open doors and walk around the vehicle.
Does a garage laser parking aid solve clearance problems?
It can help you stop consistently in the correct front-to-back position. It does not make the garage wider, solve insufficient side clearance, or replace measuring the vehicle and garage.
The Bottom Line
The market is getting larger, but averages are not enough for a buying or garage-fit decision. Check the exact vehicle’s body width, mirror width, length, and maximum equipped height against the actual opening, interior space, and clearance you have.
