A “murdered-out” car is styled predominantly in black or another dark tone. The look can come from dark paint or a wrap, black trim and wheels, and tinted windows; some builds also darken lamp lenses. There is no fixed package of parts, so the key distinction is between cosmetic choices and changes that affect visibility or required safety equipment.
What “murdered-out” means
“Murdered-out” is informal styling language, not a formal vehicle specification. One owner might choose black paint and wheels; another might add dark trim or window tint. The term does not prescribe a particular finish, parts list, or degree of darkness. The available official sources do not establish the term’s origin.
Ways to create the look
Dark paint or a wrap
Dark paint and wrap film are two possible routes to a darker exterior. The choice depends on the vehicle and the owner’s priorities, but the available evidence does not support a reliable comparison of their cost, lifespan, paint-protection effect, or resale impact. Get product-specific and vehicle-specific information before choosing.
Black trim and wheels
Dark trim and wheels can reinforce the appearance without changing the car’s lighting. If a change involves wheels, tires, or other fitment, follow the vehicle’s specifications and seek advice specific to the car; general styling language is not a fitment guide.

- Most Realistic Paint-Replacement: VViViD Vinyls presents the newest evolution in vinyl wrap technology. Our Ultra Gloss range is the result of years of research and development, culminating in an almost mirror-like Gloss that is virtually indistinguishable from a factory paint job.
- Premium Features: To achieve the Ultra Gloss look, VViViD re-designed every aspect of car-wrap vinyl from the ground up. The result is a range of films packed with new technologies to create a stunningly beautiful finish. Conventional vinyl wraps can look good, but Ultra Gloss takes it to the next level.
- Nano Air-Release Technology: Air-release channels built into vinyl adhesive can sometimes create irregularities in the surface, making for a less glossy finish. VViViD’s Ultra Gloss films are the only vinyls that utilize a micro air-release pattern so finely engineered that the result is an almost glass-like finish.
- Stretchable Protective Cap: Unlike other vinyls, VViViD’s Ultra Gloss comes with a protective film that stretches with the vinyl, so you don’t have to remove that protective layer until the installation is complete, reducing the risk of scratches and scuffs.
- VViViD Ultra Gloss vinyls are ready to use right out of the box, no liquids or messy, toxic chemicals needed. For the car enthusiast who demands next-level refinement, with beautiful colors and textures, look no further.
Window tint
Tinted windows are a prominent part of some builds, but darkness is not just a styling decision: it can reduce visibility, and legal limits vary by location and window. Check the current rules where the vehicle is registered and driven before buying film or arranging installation.
Darkened lamp lenses
Some owners darken headlight or taillight lenses, but doing so can reduce the visibility of the vehicle’s lights or signals. Treat lamp visibility as a safety requirement, not a cosmetic detail; do not use opaque or visibility-reducing treatments, and check local requirements.

How to choose between styling changes
Compare each option against the same practical questions rather than assuming every dark modification has the same trade-offs:
- Reversibility: Can the change be removed or undone, and what would that involve?
- Visibility and safety: Could it affect windows, headlights, taillights, signals, or another safety-related feature?
- Local compliance: Does the applicable law permit the change on this vehicle and in the places it will be driven?
- Installation: Does it require specialist work, and what vehicle-specific expertise is needed?
- Total cost, durability, and upkeep: Ask for details for the specific material, product, and installation. There are no established comparative figures here for cost or durability.
Window-tint and lighting rules depend on where you drive
United States
NHTSA explains that federal law restricts specified manufacturers, distributors, dealers, and motor-vehicle repair businesses from knowingly making inoperative safety equipment or design elements installed to meet federal standards. Its window-tint interpretation discusses a 70% light-transmittance requirement in the federal glazing context, while also explaining that states may regulate owner modifications and vehicle operation. This is not a universal tint limit for every owner or vehicle: check the current law in the relevant state. Read NHTSA’s window-tint interpretation.

United Kingdom
The Highway Code says drivers must not use a vehicle with excessively dark tint on the windscreen or front side windows. Its maintenance guidance also addresses keeping lights, brakes, steering, tires, and other listed equipment in working order. These are UK rules and guidance, not standards for other countries. Read Highway Code Annex 6.

After any styling work, make sure the vehicle’s safety-related equipment still functions as required. In the UK, the Highway Code’s maintenance guidance specifically covers lights, brakes, steering, and tires. For tint, lighting, and other regulated modifications elsewhere, check the rules for the relevant jurisdiction and vehicle rather than assuming a cosmetic build is automatically road-legal.
