Factory parking-assist systems can use cameras and other sensors to help a car find and enter a parallel space, but they do not all automate the same tasks. Some steer while the driver works the pedals; others control speed, braking and gear changes, and some allow remote operation. The systems still require driver oversight. As for the privacy question in the headline: the manufacturer materials cited here explain how cameras help with parking, but do not say whether imagery is recorded, sent off the vehicle, retained or shared.
How camera-assisted parallel parking works
A vehicle can combine camera views to show a bird’s-eye picture of its surroundings, then use that visual information alongside other sensors to guide a parking maneuver. The driver may choose a space or parking mode, while the vehicle handles some or all of the movement. The precise division of work varies by model and market.

These are factory-integrated features, not a capability that a generic camera or phone app can add to any car. Comparing them means looking beyond the feature name: check what the vehicle controls, how it detects a space, where the driver must be, and how the maneuver can be interrupted.

Space detection and interruption matter
A system may need neighboring cars to recognize a space
Volvo says Park Pilot Assist uses nearby vehicles to find a suitable parallel parking space. It may not detect one if no vehicle is parked in front of it. If the car does identify a space, the driver must select it before the automatic maneuver begins. A system that scans for spaces is therefore not necessarily able to recognize every empty curbside opening.

Remote operation has specific boundaries
The 2025 Genesis GV70 manual describes remote parking as a controlled procedure using the smart key, not a command to leave the vehicle to park itself elsewhere. The stated operating limit is 4 m (13 ft.); if remote operation is canceled, the vehicle stops, selects Park and applies its electronic parking brake. Follow the vehicle’s own manual for its operating conditions and controls.
Camera counts do not make systems interchangeable
Hyundai Motor Group describes a Remote Smart Parking Assist configuration with four omnidirectional cameras and ultrasonic sensors for remote parking and exit, including parallel, perpendicular and angled parking. The article also discussed Auto Valet Parking as an expectation around 2025; that dated expectation is not confirmation of general current availability. Hyundai Motor Group

Does “cameras watching you drive” mean the car records you?
Not on the evidence in these feature descriptions. They explain cameras’ role in viewing the surroundings and assisting with parking; they do not establish whether imagery is continuously recorded, whether parking imagery leaves the vehicle, how long data is retained, whether it is shared, or whether a person monitors a camera feed. Camera use for a parking feature alone cannot answer those questions.

What to check before relying on parking assist
- Vehicle and market: Confirm the exact model year, trim, equipment and country. Feature names and availability can differ across versions; the examples above are not claims that every vehicle from a manufacturer includes the feature.
- Control scope: Find out whether the system steers only or also controls acceleration, braking and gear selection.
- Space detection: Check whether you must drive past a space, select it on a display, or have neighboring parked vehicles for detection.
- Driver position and controls: Determine whether you must remain seated, can stand outside with a key, or can use an app—and what must be held or pressed.
- Supervision and stopping: Read how to pause or cancel, what the car does when interrupted, and when you must take over. Volvo explicitly tells EX90 users to monitor the maneuver and be prepared to take control.
- Privacy: Review the applicable privacy and connected-service documents separately from the parking instructions.
