First decide what “under ₹10 lakh” means
The published figures below are ex-showroom prices. They do not establish that a car will cost less than ₹10 lakh on-road: registration, insurance and other applicable charges affect the final bill, and the amount varies by city. If ₹10 lakh is your total budget, ask a local dealer for a written on-road quote for the exact automatic trim before comparing cars.

Hyundai Exter petrol AMT
Hyundai Motor India’s March 20, 2026 launch release lists these Exter petrol AMT trims and ex-showroom launch prices:

These are launch prices, not a current on-road quote. The same release gives the Exter’s starting price as ₹5,79,900; that is not the AMT starting price. Hyundai’s India model listing describes the Exter as a 1.2-litre petrol model with Smart Auto AMT. Check the Hyundai launch release and confirm the current variant and local price with a dealer.
Automatic hatchbacks
Maruti Suzuki’s hatchback range page lists automatic transmission availability for the Swift, WagonR, Celerio, Alto K10 and S-Presso. It does not provide a complete automatic-variant price comparison in the information reviewed, and notes that invoice-time prices and schemes apply. Use its hatchback range page to identify models, then verify the exact automatic trim and price with a dealer.

For a dated reference rather than a current quote, Autocar India’s November 12, 2025 guide says the Alto K10’s five-speed AMT is available in VXi and VXi+ trims and reported ₹4.95–5.45 lakh for those automatic trims at that time. Hyundai’s current India listing shows the i20 with IVT. A 2026 CarDekho roundup names a Magna IVT price example and a Tata Nexon Smart+ AMT, as well as higher-variant DCT examples. These are secondary-source leads, not a verified current price list; check the manufacturer or dealer for the exact trim and final price. Hyundai lists the Venue from ₹7,99,900 and shows MT, AT and DCT availability across the range, but its starting price does not prove that a specific automatic Venue trim is below ₹10 lakh. Compare the gearbox, not just the word “automatic”
Automatic cars in this comparison can use different transmission designs. The Exter and the cited Alto K10 trims use AMTs; Hyundai lists the i20 with an IVT, and secondary coverage also identifies DCT examples. These labels describe different systems, not a universal comfort ranking. The available evidence does not establish that one gearbox is best for every driver or route.
Test-drive the actual automatic trim you intend to buy. Include stop-start traffic, low-speed manoeuvres and parking, an incline if one is part of your regular driving, and a faster road you know. Pay attention to how the car responds when pulling away and changing speed, and whether the behaviour suits you.

How to choose between a hatchback and a compact SUV
Body style alone cannot settle this comparison. Inspect the particular cars and trims you can afford, and judge them against your routine rather than assumptions about a whole segment.

- Variant and equipment: Check the automatic’s trim name, current price and included equipment. You may need to trade equipment or body style against the transmission and final cost.
