In April 2025, Audi halted U.S.-bound vehicle shipments and held some cars already at U.S. ports; Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) announced a short-term pause in shipments to the United States, and Mitsubishi was reported to be holding imported cars at U.S. ports. These were different, company-specific responses to the newly imposed 25% U.S. vehicle import tariff—not a single industry-wide export halt. The sources below document 2025 actions, but do not establish whether any of these measures continued or ended after that year.
What the automakers did—and where
The word “halt” can blur two different steps in the supply chain: stopping vehicles before they leave for the United States and holding vehicles that have already arrived at a U.S. port. The 2025 reports described both.
| Company | Direction and location | Reported action and timing | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Audi | Vehicles bound for the United States; some had arrived at U.S. ports | EE Times reported that Audi stopped U.S.-bound shipments after the April 2, 2025 tariff implementation, including vehicles in transit or awaiting departure. It also reported that Audi held some arrivals at ports pending further direction. | EE Times, April 11, 2025 |
| Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) | Shipments to the United States | JLR announced a shipment pause in April 2025 while it addressed the new trading terms and worked on longer-term plans. The Associated Press described it as a short-term pause. | Associated Press, April 5, 2025 |
| Mitsubishi | Imported cars already at U.S. ports | EE Times reported that Mitsubishi was holding imported cars at U.S. ports while awaiting clarification. That is a port hold, not a reported halt to all U.S.-bound exports. | EE Times, April 11, 2025 |
These reports do not establish that every vehicle from these companies was affected, or that every automaker responded in the same way. EE Times also estimated Audi’s U.S. dealer inventory at about 37,000 vehicles, enough for roughly two months of sales, and put average automaker inventory at just under three months. Those were contemporary publication estimates, not audited figures or current inventory data.
Why a port hold is not an export halt
Stopping a U.S.-bound shipment
A shipment pause interrupts movement toward the U.S. market. In Audi’s reported case, the halt covered vehicles awaiting departure or already in transit; JLR announced a pause in April. A pause can give a company time to assess the cost and commercial terms of importing vehicles, but the reporting does not show what each company ultimately did with every affected car.

Holding a vehicle at a U.S. port
A port hold happens later: the vehicle has reached a U.S. port but is not moving onward while the company waits for direction or clarification. EE Times reported port holds involving Audi and Mitsubishi. A hold is not, by itself, proof that a company stopped production or permanently cancelled the import.
Checking whether an example belongs in the same story
Ford’s separate action illustrates why direction matters. Reuters reported in May 2025 that Ford had suspended automotive exports to China while continuing to import some China-built vehicles, including the Lincoln Nautilus, into the United States. That was a U.S.-to-China export decision—not a report that Ford was holding U.S.-bound cars at ports.

Why companies were reassessing shipments
The contemporary reports linked the actions to the new U.S. 25% tariff on imported vehicles. A tariff raises the cost of covered imports as they enter the market, giving automakers reasons to review landed costs, inventory and shipment timing. The sources document some company responses and industry warnings; they do not establish how much of the tariff any automaker passed on to customers, or what every company did.
Before the tariffs took effect, the Alliance for Automotive Innovation warned about potential consequences. On March 28, 2025, its president, John Bozzella, said: “Additional tariffs will increase costs on American consumers, lower the total number of vehicles sold inside the U.S. and reduce U.S. auto exports – all before any new manufacturing or jobs are created in this country.” Those were forecasts, not measured outcomes established by the cited reports. Bozzella also argued that supply chains could not be redirected quickly: “We are committed to building and investing in the U.S., but these facilities and supply chains are massive and complex and can’t be relocated or redirected overnight.” Reuters via Investing.com, March 28, 2025

What JLR said about its pause
JLR described the United States as important to its luxury brands and framed the April action as short term while it addressed new trading terms and developed longer-range plans. The Associated Press quoted the company’s statement: “The USA is an important market for JLR’s luxury brands,” and “As we work to address the new trading terms with out business partners, we are taking some short-term actions including a shipment pause in April, as we develop our mid- to longer-term plans.” The wording “out business partners” is reproduced as it appeared in the AP report.
The AP also reported that British vehicle exports to the United States had risen year over year before the tariff increase: 38.5% in December, 12.4% in January and 34.6% in February, according to figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). It reported U.K. government statistics showing £8.3 billion ($10.7 billion) in British vehicle shipments to the U.S. in the 12 months through September, making vehicles the U.K.’s largest goods export to the United States. These figures provide context for the exposure of British manufacturers, not evidence that a particular inventory strategy caused the increases.

David Bailey, professor of business economics at the University of Birmingham, told the AP: “I expect similar stoppages from other producers as firms take stock of what is unfolding.” Mike Hawes, chief executive of the SMMT, said the industry faced multiple pressures and called for trade discussions to accelerate. These were assessments and advocacy at the time, not confirmation that other automakers halted shipments.

In May 2025, Reuters reported Ford management’s estimates of a $1.5 billion adjusted EBIT tariff cost and $2.5 billion in total tariff costs for 2025. These were forecasts at the time, not realized audited results. The same report cited an estimate of more than $100 billion in expected 2025 costs for U.S. automakers; that estimate was not a confirmed final total and should not be confused with tariff revenue collected by the government.

Ford CEO Jim Farley told analysts: “It’s still too early to fully understand our competitors’ responses to these tariffs,” and said, “It’s clear, however, that in this new environment, automakers with the largest U.S. footprint will have a big advantage.” His comments reflect Ford’s view during the 2025 announcements, rather than a verified account of every automaker’s subsequent decisions. Are the shipment pauses still in effect?
The cited reports establish announcements and actions in 2025, not the present status of Audi’s, JLR’s or Mitsubishi’s measures. They do not verify whether a pause or port hold continued, ended or changed after the initial reports. A current answer requires newer company-specific information; the 2025 announcements alone cannot support a present-tense claim.
