Its significance is the design idea it represents: replacing isolated points of light with a luminous surface that can be divided into controllable segments. Audi later brought OLED rear lighting to production cars, then developed digital OLED systems with selectable signatures and model-specific warning functions.
What was Audi’s Swarm concept?
Audi’s photo archive lists “The swarm” as a lighting technology image dated January 8, 2013; the German archive identifies it as an “OLED-Designstudie,” or OLED design study. Audi’s archive entry establishes the exhibit’s identity and date, but provides little engineering detail.
The available documentation does not explain how the Swarm effect was controlled, whether its dots represented nearby traffic, or whether it operated as a complete vehicle prototype. It is best understood as a design study exploring a different way to compose rear lighting—not as a feature customers could buy or a demonstrated traffic-warning system.
How OLED taillights differ from conventional point lighting
Audi describes OLEDs as surface emitters: instead of relying on point light sources, an OLED layer emits light across an area. Audi says the layers are less than a millimeter thick and can glow on a low electrical charge of 3 to 4 volts. Their surface emission allows homogeneous lighting that can be segmented and dimmed; Audi also says OLED units do not need reflectors or optical fibers.

- For Audi 2019-2025 A6C8 Avant Allroad Travel Edition S6 RS6 Original OLED Flowing Dynamic Taillight Assembly
- -Quality Materials: Our Car Tail Lights are crafted from premium materials to ensure durability and longevity, providing exceptional performance for your vehicle.
- -Innovative Tail Light Assembly: Designed for a seamless fit, our Rear Tail Lights feature a reliable tail light assembly that enhances visibility and safety on the road.
- -Enhanced Visibility: The Car Taillight is engineered to deliver bright and clear illumination, ensuring that your vehicle is easily seen by others, especially in low-light conditions.
- -Easy Installation:** Our Tail Light Assembly is designed for straightforward installation, making it ideal for DIY enthusiasts and professionals alike, without compromising on quality.
That combination opens up styling possibilities. A designer can shape a broad, continuous-looking luminous area and divide it into distinct sections, rather than arranging a lamp around separate points and the optics needed to distribute their light. The Swarm study belongs to that design exploration. Audi’s technical description is manufacturer information, not an independent comparison of efficiency, lifespan, repairability, or safety.
How Audi’s OLED taillights moved from concept to production
Audi’s production history shows a progression from OLED surfaces to more digitally configurable rear-light signatures. The figures below are Audi-reported specifications, not independent measurements.

| Vehicle and year | Audi-reported rear-light detail | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| TT RS, 2016 | 12 segments per light | Audi says OLED rear lights debuted in a production model. |
| A8, 2017 | 16 segments | Audi describes a higher segment count than the TT RS. |
| Q5, 2020 | Digital OLED rear-light signatures | Audi says drivers could change the signature while retaining the same type of hardware. |
In its account of lighting digitization, Audi says digital OLED panels connect to the vehicle’s electrical control unit over a bus system, allowing individual segments to be controlled. That is a production-system development distinct from what the Swarm archive record establishes. Audi’s explanation of lighting digitization also places the work in a broader shift toward lighting that is both a styling element and a configurable interface.
Supplier Signify (then Philips Lighting) reported in July 2013 that Philips produced the 3D OLEDs used in Audi TT rear lights and that production methods were adapted for three-dimensional glass substrates. This adds manufacturing context to Audi’s OLED lineage, but does not establish that the Swarm exhibit itself became a production lamp. Signify’s announcement concerns the three-dimensional OLED work.

What digital OLED rear lights can do now
Audi’s technology lexicon describes second-generation digital OLED rear lights in the Q6 e-tron. The system uses six panels containing 360 segments in total. Audi says its communication light can display warning symbols for situations including emergency assistance, a rear-end collision alert, hazards, emergency calls, breakdown calls, and emergency braking. These are functions Audi associates with that production system and its configurations; they are not documented capabilities of the 2013 Swarm study.
Audi also describes flexible OLED substrates as a way to create curved panels and integrate lighting more three-dimensionally into bodywork. The lexicon includes future-facing examples of direct hazard communication, and says automatic adjustments while driving depend on legislation. Availability can therefore vary by model, market, configuration, regulation, and development status; Audi notes that not every system in its technology descriptions is currently available in production vehicles. Audi’s lighting technology lexicon sets out those distinctions.

What the Swarm study does—and does not—show
- It does show: Audi was exploring OLED surface lighting as a design medium in 2013.
- It helps explain: how surface-emitting OLEDs can be shaped, segmented, and used for different visual signatures.
- It does not establish: the Swarm’s control electronics, a connection between its dots and surrounding traffic, or that the exhibit was a complete functioning vehicle prototype.
- It does not demonstrate: a quantified crash reduction or other measured safety outcome specific to the concept.
Stephan Berlitz, Audi’s Head of Lighting Development, said, “At Audi, light means safety above all, which means seeing and being seen.” That is Berlitz’s statement of Audi’s lighting priorities, not an independent safety finding about the Swarm or OLED taillights generally.
