Audi’s announcements establish the generation chronology, but not a complete year-by-year availability record for every market. A release date is not necessarily the model-year designation used by a country’s sales program, so confirm the local market and model year when evaluating a specific car.
First generation: the RS 3 Sedan appears in 2016
Audi’s MediaCenter record dated September 29, 2016, documents the first RS 3 Sedan. It identifies a 2.5-liter car, but does not provide a comprehensive launch specification or establish a universal model-year label. For that reason, calling every first-generation Sedan a “2017 model” would require confirmation from the relevant country’s model-year records.
The RS 3 family chronology starts earlier: Audi says the RS 3 Sportback launched in 2011. That 2011 date applies to the Sportback and the broader RS 3 line, not to the Sedan.

Second generation: 2021 launch brings the torque splitter
On July 22, 2021, Audi announced the new RS 3 and identified the Sedan as its second generation. Audi’s launch specification listed a 2.5 TFSI five-cylinder engine producing 294 kW (400 PS) and 500 Nm, quattro all-wheel drive, and a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission. These are launch specifications, not a guarantee that every market, trim or later model year has identical equipment.
What the RS torque splitter changed
The RS torque splitter can vary drive-torque distribution between the rear wheels. Audi paired it with RS Performance and RS Torque Rear drive modes. This hardware and its associated modes are defining features of the second-generation launch specification; verify local equipment and package availability for an individual car.

Launch acceleration and top speed
Audi quoted a 0–100 km/h time of 3.8 seconds for the 2021 launch car. Its facts-and-figures material listed an electronically limited 250 km/h top speed, with higher limits available through packages; with the RS dynamics package plus, Audi described a 290 km/h maximum. Package names and availability can vary by market, so these figures should not be treated as standard for every Sedan.
2022 RS 3 performance edition: a limited run, not a new generation
Announced on October 18, 2022, the RS 3 performance edition was limited to 300 units across Sedan and Sportback body styles. Audi rated it at 299 kW (407 PS) and stated a 300 km/h top speed. The edition included RS bucket seats, ceramic brakes and adaptive chassis as standard. It is a special edition within the second-generation era, not a separate Sedan generation or a specification that applies to ordinary model years.

2024 update and the latest sourced Germany figures
Audi’s 2024 update release describes an update to the RS 3 family and confirms that the Sedan’s second generation launched in 2021. The release also reports almost 80,000 RS 3 vehicles produced since the line’s 2011 market launch; that total covers the RS 3 line, not Sedan production alone.
Audi’s Germany technical sheet, with a status date of June 5, 2025, lists combined consumption of 9.4–9.1 l/100 km and combined CO₂ emissions of 213–207 g/km. These are Germany-program figures and may vary by configuration. They should not be used as universal figures or as proof of every market’s 2026 model specification.

How to compare RS 3 Sedan model years
For a meaningful comparison, identify the country and model-year designation first. Then check whether each number describes a launch specification, standard equipment or an option. Useful comparison points include:
- Engine output and torque, including whether a car is the 2022 performance edition.
- Drivetrain and transmission, especially the presence of the RS torque splitter on the second-generation launch specification.
- Acceleration and top-speed limits, with the relevant package specified.
- Suspension, brakes, tires and special-edition equipment.
- Consumption and emissions only when the market and test basis are comparable.
Audi’s releases and technical sheets are useful for confirming what was announced for a specific program, but they do not substitute for a country-specific model-year or vehicle-equipment record.
