Today, “quattro” is an umbrella name, not one identical all-wheel-drive mechanism: the hardware and its behavior depend on the Audi’s model, engine layout, transmission, generation and market. Audi’s history documents a steady expansion of the technology, but does not establish that every newer quattro system is categorically better than every older one.
What is Audi quattro?
Quattro is Audi’s name for its all-wheel-drive systems. Audi introduced the original quattro in 1980 with a manually locking center differential. The system’s rally success made the name central to the brand, but the engineering behind it has changed substantially since then. Audi’s current descriptions cover mechanical differentials, clutch-based systems and electric-drive implementations—not a single shared design.
For a particular car, the useful question is not simply whether it has quattro, but which quattro architecture it uses. Engine orientation, transmission, model and model year can all matter.
How did quattro develop?
Audi’s milestones show several distinct engineering paths. The dates below are company history milestones; they do not mean that every Audi adopted each development at that time.

| Year | Milestone Audi identifies | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| 1980 | Original quattro debut at the Geneva Motor Show | The coupe used a manually locking center differential. |
| 1986 | Torsen center differential | Audi says a self-locking Torsen differential replaced the manual-locking arrangement. |
| 1999 | Multi-plate clutch in compact models | Audi identifies an electronically controlled hydraulic clutch application in the TT and A3. |
| 2005 | Asymmetric, dynamic center differential | Audi described a 40:60 default torque distribution for this system—not for every quattro model. |
| 2016 | quattro ultra | Audi added an efficiency-focused system that can disconnect and reconnect the rear axle. |
| 2019/2020 | Electric AWD in the e-tron era | Audi described all-wheel drive delivered through separately controlled electric motors. |
The sequence is not a simple replacement chain. Audi’s range came to include different systems for different vehicle layouts and purposes.
How does quattro AWD work?
Mechanical center differential
In Audi’s description of one longitudinal-engine application, a self-locking center differential is a mechanical planetary gear. It normally distributes torque 40:60 front to rear. If grip fades at one axle, Audi says the system can shift as much as 70 percent forward or 85 percent rearward. Those figures describe that application; they are not universal quattro specifications.
This kind of mechanical system distributes drive between the axles through a center differential. Some top models add a rear sport differential, which Audi lists as a separate feature of selected applications.
quattro ultra
Quattro ultra uses two clutches to switch between front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. Audi says its controller evaluates vehicle information predictively, allowing it to engage the rear axle when needed. Unlike a continuously driven mechanical arrangement, this architecture can disconnect the rear axle as part of its efficiency strategy.

Audi’s A6 application description distinguishes permanent mechanical quattro paired with an eight-speed tiptronic from ultra technology paired with a seven-speed S tronic in the specified range. That is a model- and market-specific example, not a rule for Audi’s entire lineup today.
Clutch-based systems for other layouts
Audi identifies multi-plate-clutch versions for transverse-engine models and the R8. Their presence is one reason the quattro badge alone does not tell you the exact hardware or engagement behavior in a given car.
Electric quattro
In e-tron examples, Audi describes electric motors controlled separately to provide all-wheel drive functions. Its e-tron S examples use three motors and electric torque vectoring. This is an electric-drive implementation; it should not be confused with a combustion Audi’s mechanical center differential.
Is quattro always on?
Not necessarily. Some quattro systems use a mechanical center differential to distribute drive between the axles, while quattro ultra can disconnect and reconnect the rear axle. Electric quattro uses motor control rather than the same mechanical center-differential layout. The badge does not identify one universal engagement strategy, so check the exact model, year and drivetrain specification to know how a particular car works.

Why did quattro become famous?
Audi credits quattro with helping revolutionize rallying. In the World Rally Championship, Audi won the manufacturers’ title in 1982; Hannu Mikkola won the drivers’ title in 1983; and Audi took both titles in 1984, with Stig Blomqvist winning the drivers’ championship. Audi also recounts Walter Röhrl’s 1987 Pikes Peak victory in a specially modified S1.
That record helps explain quattro’s reputation and its importance to Audi’s identity. It is historical evidence of motorsport achievement, not proof that any road-going quattro will outperform every rival in every condition. Road-car results depend on the vehicle and the measure being considered, such as traction on a particular surface, handling behavior, efficiency or response.
Is quattro better than it was 45 years ago?
Audi’s history documents a broader set of tools than the original manually locking differential: self-locking center differentials, clutch-based systems, axle-disconnection strategies, sport differentials and electric motor-driven AWD. That is clear technological evolution. Whether it is “better” depends on the goal: a system tuned for efficiency is not automatically superior to one designed for a different handling or traction objective.
The available Audi histories and system descriptions do not provide a like-for-like test across generations or a single definition of “better.” They support describing what changed, not a blanket claim that every current quattro is superior to every earlier version.
Quick Recap
What should you check on a specific Audi?
- Model and model year: quattro hardware can differ across generations and models.
- Engine layout: Audi describes different system families for longitudinal and transverse installations.
- Transmission and market: specified combinations can vary; an Audi application page may describe only a particular range or market.
- System architecture: determine whether the car uses a mechanical center differential, a clutch-based arrangement, an axle-disconnecting system or electric motors.
- Your comparison goal: traction, handling, efficiency and torque distribution are related but distinct measures.
