Tesla’s 2025 European registrations fell sharply, but the available China figures do not support the same simple conclusion: full-year wholesale sales declined while December domestic retail sales hit a record. The answer depends on which market measure and period you use.
What happened to Tesla registrations in Europe?
Tesla registered 238,656 vehicles in Europe in 2025, down 26.9% from 326,525 in 2024, according to ACEA data reported by CnEVPost. These are registrations for the source’s stated Europe geography, not an EU-only total.

Registrations count vehicles registered in a market during a period. They are useful for tracking market presence, but they are not identical to Tesla’s company-reported global deliveries or to consumer surveys of intent and satisfaction.

Do China sales show customers turning away?
China’s figures point in different directions because they measure different things. CPCA data reported by CnEVPost show Tesla domestic retail sales of 93,843 vehicles in December 2025, a record for the company in China. For the full year, Tesla’s China wholesale sales were 851,732, down 7.08% year over year.

Why wholesale is not the same as local customer sales
Wholesale sales include vehicles sold domestically and China-made vehicles exported to other markets. The 851,732 figure therefore cannot be read as the number of Chinese customers who bought Teslas. Domestic retail data are the more relevant measure for local customer sales; the reported December record is one month’s result, not proof that full-year retail sales rose.
How much does the broader market context tell us?
ACEA data reported by CnEVPost put BYD’s 2025 European registrations at 187,657, up 268.6% from 50,912 in 2024. That is notable competitive context, but brand comparisons need care because the companies’ powertrain mixes differ. The figures show relative registration performance; they do not establish why Tesla’s registrations fell.
ACEA’s full-year market reporting also described growth in overall global car registrations, providing a broader backdrop to Tesla’s European decline. Neither that market-level trend nor BYD’s gains, by themselves, prove that a particular factor caused Tesla’s result.
Does the latest Tesla delivery report show what is happening now?
No regional conclusion follows from the latest located Tesla release. Tesla reported 486,532 global deliveries in Q3 2026, but its Q3 2026 production and deliveries release did not provide separate Europe and China totals. A global figure cannot confirm whether the 2025 pattern continued in either region.
Tesla also cautions in that release: “Tesla vehicle deliveries and storage deployments represent only two measures of the Company’s financial performance and should not be relied on as an indicator of quarterly financial results.” That warning concerns financial interpretation; it does not supply missing regional sales data.
Quick Recap
What the evidence supports—and what it does not
- Europe: Tesla’s registrations declined substantially in 2025 on the reported Europe measure.
- China: Full-year wholesale sales declined, but that measure includes exports; December domestic retail sales reached a record.
- Customer motives: These totals do not measure sentiment, cancellations, or why individual buyers chose—or rejected—a Tesla.
- Causes: The figures alone do not establish that politics, pricing, product range, or consumer sentiment caused the European decline or China wholesale change.
- Trade context: The IEA reported that Chinese-made electric cars from Tesla accounted for 10% of EU imports from China in 2025, down from 30% in 2023. This describes the composition of those imports, not total Tesla demand; see the IEA’s Global EV Outlook 2026.
