The headline’s percentage is unverified: Honda’s March 2026 announcement concerned a sharply reduced profit forecast and potential losses tied to its electric-vehicle strategy, while American Honda reported U.S. sales growth in the first half of 2026. Those are different measures, entities, and periods.
Are Honda sales really down 50%?
Not according to the official disclosures available for this comparison. Honda Motor Co.’s March 12, 2026 announcement reported revised earnings forecasts and estimated losses related to reassessing its automobile electrification strategy. It did not report a 50% decline in overall vehicle sales. American Honda’s U.S. sales releases instead showed growth, though those U.S. results cannot establish what happened to global sales.
The origin of the 50% figure is unresolved. Without a source that identifies the measure, market, and comparison period, it should not be treated as a verified decline in Honda’s global sales, a particular model’s sales, or any specific reporting period.
What the U.S. sales figures show
American Honda Motor Co., Inc. reported 756,920 vehicle sales in the United States in the first half of 2026, up 2.4% year over year. Honda-brand sales were 687,205, up 2.5%. These are company-reported U.S. figures, not worldwide Honda sales. American Honda’s first-half 2026 sales report

For context, American Honda reported 1,430,577 U.S. sales in calendar 2025, up 0.5%. In January 2026, it projected about 1.5 million U.S. sales for calendar 2026, up 4%. That is a company forecast, not a final full-year result. 2025 U.S. sales results · 2026 U.S. sales outlook
Selected first-half U.S. model and hybrid results
- CR-V sales exceeded 226,114, up 6%; hybrid versions made up 55% of CR-V sales.
- American Honda reported 213,513 hybrid-model sales across its lineup.
These results describe reported U.S. sales and model mix. They do not provide a global demand measure or independently establish that demand is “huge.”

Why Honda’s profits are under pressure
Honda Motor Co.’s March 12, 2026 release revised its consolidated operating-profit forecast for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2026. The company changed its forecast from ¥550.0 billion in operating profit to a range from a ¥570.0 billion loss to a ¥270.0 billion loss. Honda also estimated up to ¥2.5 trillion in total losses associated with reassessing its automobile electrification strategy, including possible additional losses in the next fiscal year or later. The company described that amount as an estimate subject to risks and uncertainties. It is a potential loss estimate—not a sales decline.

Pressures Honda identified
Honda attributed the financial pressure to several factors in its March announcement:
- Changes in U.S. tariff policy affecting gasoline and hybrid vehicles.
- Reduced competitiveness in Asia after more resources were allocated to EV development.
- A slower U.S. EV market amid policy and incentive changes.
- Intensifying competition in China, where Honda said customers increasingly valued software-based features and newer EV makers had strengths in software-defined vehicles.
- Honda’s assessment that its products had not offered better value than newer EV competitors.
These are Honda’s explanations for its business outlook, not independent findings about the relative effect of each factor.

What Honda’s EV reassessment means
Honda said it would cancel development and launch of the planned Honda 0 SUV, Honda 0 Saloon, and Acura RSX for production in North America. The company said the current business environment and declining EV demand made production and sales likely to create further long-term losses. It also said it would reassess resource allocation and strengthen its hybrid business.
The announcement concerned these planned North American models; it did not say they were already on sale, nor did it announce that Honda was abandoning all EVs.

What “huge demand” does—and does not—establish
American Honda’s sales results show that its U.S. sales rose in the first half of 2026, and its release reported substantial hybrid sales. Those figures are evidence of the company’s reported sales performance in that market and period; they are not an independent measure of consumer demand across Honda’s global business.
On July 1, 2026, Lance Woelfer, American Honda’s vice president of auto sales, said affordability and fuel efficiency were resonating with customers and that hybrid models accounted for about 30% of Honda sales. That is an executive’s characterization of customer response and sales mix, not independent proof of “huge demand.” American Honda’s statement and sales results
How to read the headline
A percentage only tells a useful story when the underlying measure and comparison are clear. “Honda sales down 50%” needs to specify whether it refers to unit sales, revenue, a particular model, a market, or a period. Honda’s March disclosure addressed earnings forecasts and strategy-related loss estimates; American Honda’s U.S. releases addressed vehicle sales. Neither should be substituted for the other.
