Not automatically. Whether you can use a heated car blanket while driving depends on the instructions for that exact blanket and your vehicle. Do not use one if it requires the driver to adjust it, blocks the view or controls, or interferes with seat belts or other restraints. A 12V blanket’s manual may describe plugging it into a vehicle outlet without expressly approving use while the vehicle is moving.
Can you use a 12V heated blanket while driving?
Check both the blanket’s manual and your vehicle’s manual. The instructions for one 12V blanket cannot establish that another model—or every vehicle outlet—is suitable, and the cited product manual does not explicitly say whether its blanket may be used while driving. If either manual rules out your intended setup, follow that restriction; if compatibility is unclear, ask the vehicle maker.

A manual for a Trillium Worldwide 12V heated blanket specifies a 12V DC vehicle accessory outlet and says to start the engine before plugging it in. Those are product-specific directions, not a blanket-wide safety approval or a universal rule for vehicle outlets.
Keep the blanket from interfering with driving
NHTSA advises drivers not to engage in distracting activities. Applied to a heated blanket, that means the driver should not have to adjust, untangle, or manage it while the vehicle is moving. Keep the blanket and its cord clear of the steering wheel, pedals, shifter, other controls, the driver’s view, and seat belts or other restraints. NHTSA’s guidance is general driving advice, not a blanket-specific finding.

NHTSA also explains that it does not approve or certify individual vehicles or equipment. Its discussion of vehicle interior flammability is background context; it does not certify a heated blanket for in-car use.
Follow the exact blanket’s operating instructions
The Trillium Worldwide manual says not to use its blanket if it is wet or damaged, or while it is folded or scrunched. It instructs users to unplug it when not in use or when the vehicle is unattended, and to let it dry thoroughly after cleaning before use. These directions apply to that product; consult the manual supplied with your own blanket for its requirements.

Stop using a blanket that is damaged, wet, or subject to a safety notice. Do not assume that a 12V plug alone establishes compatibility: the available guidance does not set a universal outlet current limit or a vehicle-wide compatibility rule.

- JKMAX: In a September 17, 2026 recall, the CPSC reported that internal wire heating elements in named heated blankets and pads could overheat, creating fire and burn hazards. The notice listed approximately 195,000 units.
- Melinora: In a July 16, 2026 warning, the CPSC said internal heating elements in named electric heated blankets could overheat and melt through fabric, creating burn and fire hazards. The notice listed about 700 units.
Those unit counts come from the respective CPSC notices; they are not estimates of all heated blankets or proof that other models share the reported defects.

NHTSA includes blankets among the supplies to carry for cold-weather emergencies. An unpowered blanket can provide an emergency layer without connecting an electrical accessory. It does not provide active heat, so it is not a substitute for a powered heated blanket’s intended function.
