Electric cars are not an environmental time bomb on the evidence available, and there is no established date for a lithium crash. On a global average, a medium-size battery-electric car (BEV) has about half the lifecycle greenhouse-gas emissions of an equivalent internal-combustion (ICE) car, according to the International Energy Agency’s 2024 lifecycle analysis. That advantage is real but uneven. Battery and mineral supply chains carry local environmental and social risks, and lithium production is concentrated in a few countries. Those are the costs worth scrutinising.
The figures below come mainly from IEA reports published in 2021 and 2024 and an IRENA report from 2024. Check whether newer editions have revised them before relying on any single number.
Are electric cars worse for the environment?
On greenhouse-gas measures over a full lifecycle, usually not, though the answer depends on where the car is charged and how it is used. Lifecycle accounting includes the emissions from making the vehicle and its battery, as well as those from the energy used to drive it. The tailpipe is only part of the picture.
Battery production is significant but not the largest share
Battery emissions are a notable slice of an EV’s footprint, but they are not the largest contributor. The IEA’s 2024 battery supply-chain analysis puts it this way:

The advantage depends on where the car runs
The global average hides a wide spread. Because a car’s use-phase emissions depend on the electricity that charges it, a cleaner grid widens the BEV advantage. The IEA’s Global EV Outlook analysis finds that grid decarbonisation increases the benefit of BEVs, and that smaller vehicles have lower production and operating emissions across powertrains.

| Market (IEA 2024 comparison) | Medium-size BEV lifecycle emissions versus comparable ICE car |
|---|---|
| Global average | About half (roughly 50% lower) |
| United Kingdom | Advantage over 60% |
| Chile | Advantage over 60% |
| India | Advantage about 20% |
Each country figure reflects that market’s electricity mix and the report’s stated assumptions. They are modelled comparisons, not measured results for a single car, so read them as a range rather than a precise ranking.
Battery chemistry changes the footprint
The two most common chemistries behave differently. NMC (nickel manganese cobalt) and LFP (lithium iron phosphate) differ in their emissions per kilowatt-hour and in where those emissions arise.
| Measure (IEA 2024 analysis) | NMC | LFP |
|---|---|---|
| Pack-level emissions per kWh | Reference point | About one-third lower than NMC |
| Share of lifecycle emissions from critical-mineral processing | 55% | 35% |
| Share of lifecycle emissions from battery manufacturing | 15% | Almost half |
The split matters. An LFP pack has the lower footprint per kWh, but almost half of its emissions come from manufacturing, so the power used in the cell factory carries more weight. An NMC pack’s footprint is dominated by mineral processing, so the origin of the refined metals matters more.

Is mining a separate problem from carbon?
Yes. A carbon comparison does not settle questions about local water, waste, worker safety or community rights. Mining and processing can carry emissions, water and waste-management risks, unsafe-work conditions and human-rights concerns. These risks depend on the specific site and the governance around it, so one operation’s record should not be assumed for every mine.
Does lithium mining use too much water?
The sources cited here do not give a single water footprint for lithium extraction, and they do not establish the effect at any named mine. Water impacts depend on the site, the local water system and how the operator manages water and waste. A credible judgement about a particular project needs data from that project and its basin.
How much lithium do EVs need, and how fast will demand grow?
This article does not give a fixed lithium quantity per car, because the available figures do not establish one that holds across chemistries and pack sizes. What the sources do establish is how fast demand is projected to rise under specific scenarios.

| Source | Scenario | Projection |
|---|---|---|
| IEA, 2021 | Sustainable Development Scenario | Lithium demand for clean-energy technologies grows more than 40 times by 2040 |
| IEA, 2024 | Current policy settings | Battery demand 4.5 times higher by 2030 and more than seven times higher by 2035, as multiples of the base-year level in the IEA analysis |
These are scenarios, not market forecasts. Their outcomes depend on policy choices. A steep projected rise tells you how much new supply must be built to meet the scenario, not that the supply will fail to appear.

The published resource figures are large. They are not the same as recoverable supply, and the more pressing issues are concentration and the pace at which new projects come online.
Reserves, resources and production
| Measure | Value | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Production, 2023 | 0.96 million tonnes lithium carbonate equivalent (Mt LCE) | IRENA, 2024 |
| Reserves | 150 Mt LCE | USGS 2024, cited by IRENA, 2024 |
| Resources | 485 Mt LCE | USGS 2024, cited by IRENA, 2024 |
Reserves and resources are not interchangeable. Reserves are the portion that can be economically recovered under current conditions, while resources include deposits that are not yet economic. IRENA describes the reserves and resources as ample to meet demand in the short to medium term. Dividing reserves by 2023 output gives roughly 156 years, a figure calculated from the two numbers above. It ignores rising demand and is not a run-out date.

Concentration is the sharper risk
In 2023, more than 90% of lithium mining came from Australia, Chile and China (USGS 2024, cited by IRENA, 2024). Concentration makes supply vulnerable to a single disruption in one country or at one producer. IRENA notes that diversification is possible and already under way, so concentration is a structural risk rather than a fixed condition.
What a “crash” would have to mean
The phrase covers several different risks that should not be merged. A supply-security assessment separates them:
- Geological availability: how much lithium the earth holds, including reserves and resources.
- Project development and processing capacity: whether mines and refineries can be built and run in time.
- Geographic concentration: how much output depends on a small number of countries.
- Price volatility: sharp price swings, which hurt buyers and producers without meaning the metal has run out.
- Response capacity: how quickly markets, governments and producers can react to a disruption.
The IEA’s lithium outlook assesses supply, geopolitical, response, ESG and climate dimensions together, which is the right frame. Problems on one dimension do not automatically produce problems on the others.
Can EV batteries be recycled, and does it solve the supply question?
Recycling can materially reduce demand for new minerals, but it does not remove the need for new mining. The two IEA estimates below use different scenarios, years and metals, so read them separately rather than as one number.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Source | Scenario and year | Recycling effect |
|---|---|---|
| IEA, 2024 | Scenario meeting national climate targets, 2050 | Effective recycling cuts lithium and nickel demand by 25% each and cobalt demand by 40% |
| IEA, 2021 | Sustainable Development Scenario, 2040 | Recycled copper, lithium, nickel and cobalt reduce their combined primary supply requirements by around 10% |
The IEA is direct on the limit: “Recycling would not eliminate the need for continued investment in new supply to meet climate goals” (International Energy Agency, The Role of Critical Minerals in Clean Energy Transitions, 2021). Recycling’s contribution depends on the timing of spent batteries reaching recyclers, so it cannot be assumed to keep pace with demand growth.
How to check an EV lifecycle claim
When a headline quotes an EV’s footprint, check these points before accepting it:
Quick Recap
- Geography and electricity mix: which grid the car is charged from.
- Vehicle size and type: whether the comparison is with a like-for-like ICE car.
- Battery chemistry and where the cells are made.
- Expected lifetime mileage, which spreads manufacturing emissions over the distance driven.
- Scenario and year: whether the figure is a measured result or a projection.
