Do anti-camera license plate sprays actually work?
Some sprays are marketed as changing a plate’s reflectivity or making it difficult for a camera to capture, including by reflecting flash. PhotoBlocker, for example, says its spray is intended to reflect camera flash and make a plate invisible to cameras. Those are manufacturer claims, not independently verified results. PhotoBlocker’s product page also includes a novelty-item and local-law disclaimer.
A title-matching guide reports similar claims and cautions that technical-sounding explanations do not substitute for independent testing. That guide is secondary reporting, not a laboratory assessment. The available material does not establish consistent performance across camera types, lighting, viewing angles, distances, or image-review methods.
Why this guide does not rank five sprays
A credible “top five” comparison would need current product verification, comparable independent test results, and evidence that each product can be used lawfully on public roads in the relevant jurisdiction. Those elements are not established for five products here. Promotional descriptions or unattributed demonstrations cannot fill that gap, and this article does not claim hands-on testing.

That means there is no evidence-based way to declare one spray more effective, safer for a plate, or more road-legal than another. Treat any performance ranking that lacks transparent methods and reproducible results with caution.
How to evaluate a spray’s claims
If you encounter a product marketed as an anti-camera coating, look for evidence rather than a confident mechanism description. The available sources do not provide enough product-level data to score particular sprays, but these are the questions a meaningful review should answer:

- What exactly is the claimed mechanism? A description such as “reflects flash” is a claim to test, not a result.
- What was the test setup? Look for camera type, distance, angle, lighting, and whether the test used flash or infrared imaging.
- How were images assessed? A useful report explains how legibility was judged and shows the method, rather than relying on a cropped or unexplained demonstration.
- Can someone independent reproduce the result? Seller-only demonstrations are not equivalent to independent, repeatable testing.
- What is the product, and how does it affect the plate? A review should identify the product, disclose ingredients where available, address surface compatibility and removal, and provide a support contact.
- Would applying it comply with local plate rules? Performance claims do not answer whether a treated plate remains legally readable and unobstructed.
Are license plate sprays legal on public roads?
There is no single answer for every location. Plate-visibility requirements depend on the governing jurisdiction, so a product’s novelty-item disclaimer or a seller’s statement does not establish that using it on a road is lawful. Check the current rule where the vehicle is registered and driven before applying any coating.
Pennsylvania’s rule illustrates the issue
Pennsylvania’s Vehicle Code, 75 Pa.C.S. §1332, prohibits displaying a registration plate that is so dirty it cannot be read at a reasonable distance, or that is illegible, obscured, covered, or obstructed in specified ways. The provision expressly addresses interference with listed automated-enforcement or electronic-toll systems and prohibits tinted plate covers. It also permits a limited type of frame only when the plate number and issuing jurisdiction remain identifiable to an automated enforcement system or law enforcement.

The displayed Pennsylvania statute lists a $100 fine for violations of subsections (b)(2) or (4). That amount and the specific frame provision are Pennsylvania rules—not a nationwide standard. The law is a practical reminder that a coating’s effect on visibility may matter even if its advertised camera-defeating performance is uncertain.

For routine upkeep, clean the plate so its characters remain visible and avoid products intended to interfere with imaging. A microfiber cloth for cleaning license plates is an ordinary maintenance item, not a camera countermeasure or legal protection. The title-matching guide recommends readable-plate maintenance as a safer alternative to anti-camera products.
