The feature is real, but it is not a new 2026 launch: the relevant dashboard and split-screen update dates to February 2024.
The key limitation is the car’s screen and Android Auto implementation. A vehicle can support Android Auto yet still offer Weather & Radar only in full-screen mode—or not expose the app at all.

What the Android Auto weather app is
The app behind the headline is Weather & Radar, published by WeatherOnline. It is a third-party weather app, not Google’s own weather service.
Weather & Radar describes itself as the first fully integrated weather app for Android Auto and Android Automotive. That “first” claim comes from the developer, so it should be understood as the company’s description rather than an independently audited industry designation. Its Android Auto experience is built around weather radar and precipitation awareness rather than a simple temperature readout.

Depending on the available interface and region, the car display can show radar imagery, cloud cover, lightning, precipitation type and intensity, temperature, and related weather information. The app is intended to help drivers see changing conditions along a journey without repeatedly switching to a phone.
What split-screen mode does
Android Auto’s dashboard layout is designed to keep more than one supported experience visible. For example, navigation can occupy one area while media controls, notifications, or another compatible dashboard tile appears elsewhere. Google explains the broader adaptive dashboard approach in its Android Auto overview.
With Weather & Radar available in that layout, the practical use case is viewing weather radar beside navigation. You can keep route guidance visible while checking whether rain, snow, thunderstorms, or heavier precipitation is ahead.

This does not mean that every Android Auto screen displays a permanent weather widget. The vehicle, screen shape, Android Auto software, and app all determine which layouts are offered. On some systems, Weather & Radar may open normally in full-screen mode but not be available as a dashboard tile.

When the feature was added
The headline can sound like breaking news, but the relevant update was reported on February 8, 2024. Coverage from 9to5Google described dashboard and split-screen support as part of a Weather & Radar update associated with the app’s anniversary.
The developer’s anniversary update notes also describe interactive radar controls, additional radar layers, temperature and wind views, customization options, weather alerts, and compatibility with Android Auto’s Coolwalk-style dashboard.
There is a subtle difference between the two descriptions. Weather & Radar’s original Android Auto material said split-screen could work on vehicles with sufficiently wide displays, while the 2024 coverage emphasized dashboard compatibility as an update. The safest interpretation is that some split-screen capability depended on display and app-support conditions from the beginning, while the later update expanded or improved compatibility with Android Auto’s newer dashboard configurations.

- Rainfall and precipitation radar.
- Precipitation intensity and type.
- Cloud cover.
- Lightning activity.
- Temperature information.
- Interactive radar layers, including temperature and wind views described in the 2024 update.
- Weather alerts for conditions such as heavy rain and severe thunderstorms.
The car interface is necessarily more limited than the phone app. Not every mobile feature or control is guaranteed to appear on the vehicle display, and the exact view can vary by platform and vehicle.

Alerts also have an important qualification: Weather & Radar’s update notes say the Android Auto app needs to be open or running in the background for driving alerts. That is not the same as guaranteeing that every warning will appear independently of the app or connection.
Compatibility checklist
To try the feature, you need:
- An Android smartphone.
- A vehicle or aftermarket head unit that supports Android Auto.
- The latest available version of Weather & Radar.
- A working wired or wireless Android Auto connection, depending on the vehicle and phone.
- A vehicle display capable of the relevant wide-resolution dashboard layout if you want split-screen mode.
There is no verified universal minimum pixel width or definitive vehicle list in the available developer material. “Android Auto-compatible” alone is therefore not enough to promise split-screen support.
Narrow, portrait-oriented, or older displays may show different behavior. Some vehicles may offer the app full-screen but omit it from the dashboard. Others may use a vehicle-specific dashboard or split-screen system that changes how Android Auto tiles are arranged.
Android Auto versus Android Automotive
These names describe different platforms:
- Android Auto uses the Android phone to supply the experience and projects compatible apps to the vehicle display.
- Android Automotive runs Android directly inside the vehicle’s infotainment system.
Weather & Radar supports both, but the available controls and behavior do not have to match. For example, the developer’s update notes identify some unit-adjustment options as Android Automotive-only. An app working on an Android Automotive vehicle is not proof that the same feature will behave identically through phone-projected Android Auto.

How to install and launch Weather & Radar
- Install or update Weather & Radar on the Android phone from the official app destination.
- Confirm that Android Auto already connects and works normally in the vehicle.
- Connect the phone to the car using the vehicle’s supported wired or wireless method.
- Open the Android Auto app launcher on the vehicle display.
- Select the Weather & Radar icon.
- If the vehicle offers the dashboard layout, use its dashboard or split-screen control to place Weather & Radar beside navigation or another supported experience.
The exact button names and tile arrangement vary by vehicle, so do not expect every car to show the same control. The developer’s basic instruction is to connect the phone and select the app icon on the car display; the dashboard placement is then subject to the vehicle’s available layout.

Work through these checks:
- Update Weather & Radar from Google Play.
- Update Android Auto and Google Play services.
- Reconnect the phone and restart the Android Auto session.
- Check Android Auto’s launcher customization settings to make sure the app is not hidden.
- Try opening Weather & Radar in full-screen mode first.
- Return to the Android Auto dashboard and check whether the app is offered as a compatible tile.
- Look for a dashboard or split-screen setting in the vehicle’s infotainment system.
- Test the dashboard with Google Maps and another supported app.
- Restart both the phone and the infotainment system.
- Verify that the vehicle supports Android Auto, rather than only a proprietary phone-mirroring mode.
If the app works full-screen but not beside navigation, installation is probably not the problem. That pattern usually points to the display, dashboard layout, app support, or vehicle-specific implementation.
If weather data stops updating, check the phone’s data connection, location permissions, battery or background restrictions, and whether the app remains active. Alerts may likewise fail if the app is neither open nor running in the background.

Weather & Radar is most useful for drivers who want precipitation and storm context while navigating—particularly on long trips, commutes, or journeys through unsettled weather. A radar view can be more informative than a static current-temperature display, and dashboard support can reduce the need to switch repeatedly between navigation and weather.

It is a weaker fit if you only want the temperature, use a small or portrait display, have unreliable mobile connectivity, or expect a tiny always-visible weather widget. Detailed radar controls can also be difficult to read and distracting on a moving vehicle’s screen.
Set up the view before driving and minimize interaction while the car is moving. Weather information can improve trip awareness, but it is not a safety guarantee, and drivers should not manipulate radar layers while concentrating on traffic.
How it fits into Google’s car ecosystem
Weather & Radar should not be confused with Google’s own weather features or with every weather app available in cars. Google’s broader car ecosystem includes weather experiences such as The Weather Channel on certain vehicles with Google built-in, but that is a vehicle-platform feature rather than a universal replacement for Android Auto users. Google has also continued expanding supported car-app categories, including weather-related experiences, as described in the Android Developers Blog.
The important distinction is whether an app is a genuine car-compatible experience or merely a phone screen being mirrored through an unsupported workaround. Android Auto and Android Automotive impose their own app and distraction requirements, so support for one platform does not automatically extend to another.
