Android Auto 13.5 Was a Beta Rollout, Not a New Stable Release—Here’s What Changed

Android Auto 13.5 was reported as a beta rollout in January 2025. Here’s what the vehicle terminology changes and motorcycle APK assets really mean—and how to troubleshoot wireless connection problems.

Android Auto 13.5 was first reported as a beta rollout on January 7, 2025—not as a Google-announced stable release. Its most visible change was a shift in Google’s wording from “car” to “vehicle,” while APK analysis revealed motorcycle-related assets and additional vehicle-brand references. Those findings suggested broader compatibility work, but they did not prove that full motorcycle support or every related integration was active for all users.

For stable-channel users, Android Auto moved on quickly: Android Auto 13.6 and 13.7 were reported on the stable track by February 19, 2025, while 13.8 was entering beta. If you are troubleshooting Android Auto now, checking Google Play for the newest available update and testing a reliable wired connection are more useful than trying to find an old 13.5 APK.

Was Android Auto 13.5 a stable update?

Not according to the available evidence. On January 7, 2025, 9to5Google reported that Android Auto 13.5 was rolling out to Play Store beta users. That makes “Android Auto 13.5 Stable Update Released” an inaccurate headline unless it is carefully qualified as part of a broader rollout cycle.

No Google-published changelog identified in the research labels Android Auto 13.5 as a stable release. Some users may have encountered a production-signed 13.5 build during the wider distribution period, but that is different from Google formally presenting 13.5 as the current stable-channel version.

The version progression also matters. By February 19, 2025, reports indicated that Android Auto 13.6 and 13.7 were available through the stable track, while Android Auto 13.8 was rolling out to beta users. In practical terms, 13.5 was a short-lived step in the release cycle rather than the stable version users should seek today. 9to5Google’s release and bug report documents that progression.

What changed in Android Auto 13.5?

Google replaced “car” with “vehicle” in several labels

The clearest user-facing change was terminology. Android Auto changed references such as:

  • “Connected cars” to “Connected vehicles”
  • “Connect a car” to “Connect a vehicle”

This may look minor, but the wording hints at a broader product direction. “Vehicle” can include more than a conventional passenger car, including motorcycles and other transportation formats. It does not, by itself, mean that every type of vehicle gained Android Auto support in version 13.5.

APK analysis found motorcycle-related assets

Analysis of the Android Auto 13.5 package found motorcycle-related icons and assets associated with several brands, including Geely, Leap Motor, Fiat, and Lucid. These discoveries are useful clues about Google’s development work, but they are not the same as a feature announcement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Code and image assets can represent an unfinished feature, an experiment, compatibility preparation, or functionality intended for a later release. The APK findings therefore support the cautious conclusion that Google was preparing Android Auto for broader vehicle types. They do not establish that full motorcycle support was universally enabled in Android Auto 13.5.

Likewise, the presence of brand-specific assets does not prove that a particular Lucid, Fiat, Geely, or Leap Motor integration was live for every owner. The original reporting from 9to5Google makes this distinction important.

What Android Auto 13.5 did not conclusively deliver

Several claims associated with the 13.5 story go beyond the available evidence:

  • Universal motorcycle support: The motorcycle assets indicated preparation, not guaranteed support for every motorcycle or market.
  • Broad high-resolution output: The research does not establish that higher-resolution Android Auto displays generally became available in 13.5.
  • Universal brand integrations: APK references do not prove that every related manufacturer integration shipped or worked across all vehicles.
  • A new stable-channel experience: The initial documented rollout was beta, and later stable versions superseded it.

Android Auto should also be kept separate from Android Automotive OS. Android Auto projects compatible phone functions—such as navigation, calls, messages, and media—onto a vehicle’s display. Android Automotive OS is an operating system integrated into the vehicle itself. Google’s later announcements about in-car software, widgets, immersive navigation, parked video, Dolby Atmos, and expanded Gemini capabilities describe a newer roadmap and should not be attributed retroactively to Android Auto 13.5. Google discussed those later developments in its May 12, 2026 Android-in-the-car announcement.

Android Auto 13.5 wireless connection problems

Some users reported wireless Android Auto failures after Android Auto 13.4 and 13.5 rolled out in late January and early February 2025. The common pattern was that wireless projection failed while a wired USB connection still worked. The issue was not universal, and Google had not formally acknowledged it at the time of the reporting.

A separate report from Android Authority described cases in which some phones rebooted when connecting wirelessly to a vehicle after the 13.4 and 13.5 updates. Its February 24 update said that an earlier attribution to a newer Android Auto version was incorrect and suggested disabling two Android Developer Settings options as a possible workaround:

  1. Open Settings on the phone.
  2. Open System, then Developer options. The exact location can vary by Android manufacturer.
  3. Disable Enable freeform windows if present.
  4. Disable Enable desktop mode if present.
  5. Restart the phone and test Android Auto again.

Developer-option names and availability can vary, and changing these settings is not a guaranteed fix. Android Authority also reported that Android Auto 13.8.650804 connected reliably in its own testing, but that result should not be generalized to every phone, vehicle, or head unit. Read the Android Authority report for the original device-specific context.

1. Install the newest version available through Google Play

Open the Google Play Store, search for Android Auto, and select Update if one is offered. Google’s official Play listing identifies Android Auto as a Google LLC app and confirms that it remains actively maintained. The accessible listing does not independently expose a current version number, so do not treat the listing’s update date alone as proof of a particular version.

2. Confirm the basic requirements

Google’s listing says Android Auto requires an Android 6.0-or-newer phone with an active data connection. The vehicle or stereo must also support Android Auto. Compatibility is not universal: the Play listing refers to more than 400 compatible car models, while Google’s dedicated compatibility resources refer to more than 500 models and provide vehicle and stereo information. Those different totals likely reflect different update timings or counting methods, so use Google’s compatibility resources for your exact vehicle rather than relying on a headline number.

3. Test wired Android Auto

If wireless projection fails, connect the phone directly to the vehicle using the vehicle’s Android Auto-enabled USB port. Use a data-capable cable, not a charge-only cable, and make sure the connectors fit firmly. A high-quality USB cable is specifically recommended in Google’s Android Auto listing.

A wired connection is a diagnostic step, not proof that the wireless hardware is defective. If wired Android Auto works while wireless Android Auto fails, the problem may involve Bluetooth pairing, the wireless Android Auto handshake, 5 GHz Wi-Fi behavior, phone software, the vehicle head unit, or the Android Auto release itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Re-pair the phone and vehicle

Delete the phone from the vehicle’s Bluetooth memory and remove the vehicle from the phone’s Bluetooth settings. Restart both devices, pair them again, and follow the vehicle’s Android Auto prompts. For wireless Android Auto, Bluetooth is generally used to begin pairing while the active projection session uses Wi-Fi; a failure in either stage can prevent the connection.

5. Avoid an unverified 13.5 downgrade

Installing an older APK can introduce signing, compatibility, security, or update problems. It also may not solve a fault caused by the vehicle firmware, phone software, wireless chipset, Bluetooth pairing data, or a damaged cable. Unless a manufacturer or support technician specifically directs you to use a tested build, updating through Google Play is the safer path.

Do you need a wireless Android Auto adapter?

A wireless adapter can be useful if your vehicle already supports wired Android Auto but does not provide factory wireless projection. It cannot add Android Auto to a vehicle that does not support Android Auto at all, and it should not be presented as a guaranteed fix for a Google software bug.

These adapters normally plug into the vehicle’s existing Android Auto-enabled USB port. The phone then pairs with the adapter instead of requiring a cable for every drive. Compatibility depends on the vehicle manufacturer’s implementation, the phone, and the adapter’s firmware.

Motorola MA1

The Motorola MA1 is designed to connect to an existing Android Auto-enabled USB port. Motorola says it uses Bluetooth for pairing and 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the wireless Android Auto session. The company also warns that compatibility depends on the automaker’s implementation and identifies Mitsubishi as a known incompatible brand.

Check the current vehicle list, retailer seller, price, stock, and return policy before buying. A product being marketed as a wireless Android Auto adapter does not guarantee compatibility with every trim, head unit, or phone.

AAWireless TWO

AAWireless TWO is another option for vehicles with wired Android Auto. Reporting in March 2025 described it as available through Amazon for $64.99 at that time, with a USB-C-to-USB-A cable and a companion app for firmware updates, customization, and troubleshooting.

That price and availability are historical, not a current buying promise. Verify the current model generation, listing, seller, stock, return terms, and compatibility before ordering. The app-based update and troubleshooting controls may appeal to readers who want more configuration options, but it is still an adapter for compatible wired Android Auto systems—not a replacement for an Android Auto-equipped head unit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a cable is the better purchase

If wireless Android Auto has become unreliable, a dependable USB-C data cable for Android Auto is often the simplest fallback. Look for a cable that supports data transfer, matches the phone’s connector, and is short enough to avoid strain around the center console. It may restore a stable wired connection, but it cannot repair an incompatible vehicle, a damaged USB port, or an underlying software defect.

How compatible is Android Auto?

Android Auto’s Play listing describes core functions including Google Maps or Waze navigation, route and traffic information, Assistant-supported calls and messaging, and media playback. Google’s listing also references compatibility with more than 400 car models, while its separate compatibility page uses a higher figure. Since both figures can change and may count vehicles differently, verify compatibility by year, model, trim, and stereo rather than assuming that support for one version of a vehicle guarantees support for another.

For a vehicle without Android Auto, the relevant solution may be an Android Auto-compatible aftermarket stereo or a manufacturer-supported upgrade—not Android Auto 13.5 itself. A head-unit purchase requires model-specific fitment research, wiring and steering-wheel-control considerations, installation space, and confirmation that the receiver supports the phone’s Android version.

The practical verdict on Android Auto 13.5

Android Auto 13.5 is best understood as a January 2025 beta-era build that signaled broader vehicle compatibility work. The “car” to “vehicle” wording changes were real, and motorcycle-related APK assets were a meaningful clue. But the evidence does not support calling it a major stable release with universal motorcycle support, guaranteed brand integrations, or broadly available high-resolution output.

If your goal is reliable Android Auto, use the current Google Play release available for your phone, confirm vehicle compatibility, test a quality data cable, and re-pair wireless connections when necessary. Consider a wireless adapter only when the vehicle already supports wired Android Auto and the specific adapter is confirmed to work with that vehicle and phone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still install Android Auto 13.5?

You may find older APK packages online, but installing one is generally not advisable. Android Auto 13.5 was part of a 2025 beta-era rollout, and later stable versions superseded it. Check Google Play for the newest compatible release instead.

Did Android Auto 13.5 add motorcycle support?

The package contained motorcycle-related icons and assets, which suggested preparation for broader vehicle support. That evidence does not prove that complete motorcycle support was enabled for every user, vehicle, or market.

Why does wired Android Auto work but wireless Android Auto fail?

The two modes use different connection steps and wireless hardware. Bluetooth pairing, 5 GHz Wi-Fi, phone software, vehicle firmware, head-unit compatibility, or an Android Auto release can affect wireless projection while USB remains functional.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will a wireless Android Auto adapter fix Android Auto 13.5 problems?

Not necessarily. An adapter can provide wireless projection in a vehicle that already supports wired Android Auto, but it cannot guarantee a fix for Google software bugs or incompatibility. Confirm compatibility before purchasing.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Android Auto 13.5 was reported as a beta rollout, not a clearly documented stable release. Its important story was the move toward broader “vehicle” support, including motorcycle-related development clues—not a universally delivered motorcycle feature. For current use, update through Google Play, troubleshoot with a known-good data cable, and buy a wireless adapter only if your vehicle already supports wired Android Auto.
