Android Auto 12.6 stable was a maintenance release, not a feature-packed redesign. Google’s release text for Android Auto 12.6.6432 says only “bug fixes and other improvements,” so no major user-facing feature can be reliably attributed to this version. The update is historical; current users should use Google Play, while anyone seeking the archived build should treat APK installation as a compatibility and security exercise.
Android Auto 12.6 stable was a maintenance release, not a major redesign. Google’s published release text for version 12.6.6432 says only “bug fixes and other improvements.” It does not document a new interface, a new app, a vehicle-support expansion, or any specific fix.
That makes the most accurate answer less exciting but more useful: Android Auto 12.6 may have improved reliability or compatibility for some devices and vehicles, but the available release information does not identify which problems it addressed. If you need Android Auto working now, update through Google Play rather than looking for this historical build. If you specifically need Android Auto 12.6, treat the APK as an archived, variant-dependent package and install it cautiously.
Android Auto 12.6: version and release date

Package listings appeared across August and early September 2024, including August 10, August 15, August 19, August 27–30, and September 3–11.

Those dates describe when particular APK variants were published or became available in an archive. They should not be read as proof of one worldwide rollout date. Contemporary coverage described 12.6 moving from beta to stable in August 2024, but Google did not publish a detailed consumer changelog.
Important: Android Auto 12.6 is historical software. It is not the latest stable Android Auto release. By July 2026, Google’s Play listing showed a much newer update, and reporting identified Android Auto 17.2.662638 as a fix build for a July 2026 disconnection problem.
What features did Android Auto 12.6 add?
No major user-facing feature is confirmed for Android Auto 12.6. The documented release description is limited to “bug fixes and other improvements.” It does not name individual fixes or describe a redesigned launcher, new controls, new apps, or expanded vehicle compatibility.
That distinction matters because several Android Auto and Google Maps developments were discussed around the same August 2024 period. They are related context, but they should not automatically be described as Android Auto 12.6 features.

A colorful, animated Google Assistant voice-interaction treatment was reported in August 2024. However, the observation was made on Android Auto 12.5 running on a Galaxy Z Fold 6, and the rollout scope was unclear. That is not reliable evidence that the interface was introduced specifically in 12.6.
If you saw the animation after updating, it may have been a staged rollout, a Google Assistant change, a device-specific experiment, or a version-adjacent change rather than a feature bundled exclusively with 12.6.
Google Maps incident reporting
Google Maps also began rolling out direct incident reporting in Android Auto and other environments around this period. The feature was part of the Maps experience and was distributed across Android Auto, Google-built-in vehicles, Android, iOS, and Apple CarPlay.

It is therefore more accurate to call this a Google Maps rollout that some Android Auto users encountered alongside version 12.6, not a confirmed Android Auto 12.6 feature.
What the update may have fixed
Point releases commonly contain device-, vehicle-, USB-, wireless-, or account-specific fixes that are not described in public release notes. Android Auto 12.6 may have included such changes, but the available evidence does not enumerate them.
Do not assume that 12.6 fixed a particular BMW wireless problem, a specific phone model, failed text messages, USB disconnects, or any other issue unless you have evidence for that exact phone-and-vehicle combination.
How to download Android Auto 12.6
Recommended method: Google Play
For normal use, update Android Auto through the Google Play Store. Google’s support guidance says Android Auto is integrated into compatible phones and does not need to be downloaded separately for supported car-display use. Google’s consumer Android Auto page still directs users to Google Play, while phones running Android 10 or newer generally do not require a separate Android Auto installation.
- Open the Google Play Store on your phone.
- Search for Android Auto.
- Open the listing published by Google LLC.
- Tap Update if an update is available. If you see Open instead, your phone may already have the current version offered to your account or device.
This route is preferable because Google selects a package appropriate for the phone, manages updates, and preserves the normal signature and Play-service relationship. It will normally install the current compatible release rather than historical 12.6.

Use an archived APK only when you have a specific reason, such as testing an old build or investigating a regression. A reputable APK archive lists several Google LLC packages for 12.6.6432, including different CPU architectures, DPI configurations, and release variants.
If you choose this route:
- Record your current version first. Open Android Auto’s Play Store listing or your phone’s app information screen and save the version number.
- Back up or retain the current installation path. Downgrading may require uninstalling updates, which can remove app data or settings depending on the phone.
- Match the APK to your phone. Check the required Android version, CPU architecture, DPI or configuration variant, and package name. An arm64-v8a package is not interchangeable with every other Android build.
- Verify the publisher and signature. The package should identify Google LLC and have a signature compatible with the installed application. Do not install a modified or repackaged APK merely because its version number says 12.6.
- Use Android’s installation permission only when needed. If Android blocks the file, review the “install unknown apps” permission for the app handling the file. Disable that permission again after installation.
- Test the exact connection you care about. Check calls, messages, navigation, music, wired projection, and wireless projection separately.
- Return to Google Play if the result is worse. Old builds can conflict with newer Google services, Android releases, vehicles, or security policies.
Do not treat an archived APK as the latest stable release. APK archives contain multiple package variants, and an old package may be technically installable while still being unsuitable for your phone, car, region, or current Google services.

Android Auto 12.6 compatibility requirements
Installing the application is only one part of compatibility. The phone, vehicle or stereo, connection method, Android version, and region all matter.
| Connection | General requirements |
|---|---|
| Wired Android Auto | Android 9.0 or newer, an active mobile data plan, a compatible vehicle or aftermarket stereo, and a high-quality USB data cable. |
| Wireless Android Auto | A compatible phone with an active data plan and 5 GHz Wi-Fi support. Google’s guidance says wireless projection is compatible with Android 11 or newer, subject to vehicle and regional requirements. |
| Android Go | Android Auto is not available on Android Go devices. |
These are current support guidelines and should not be confused with the minimum Android version shown in an archived APK listing. For example, an archived 12.6 variant may list Android 8.0 or newer as its package requirement, but that does not guarantee that Google currently supports Android Auto projection on every Android 8 device.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA USB port also does not prove that a vehicle supports Android Auto. The vehicle or aftermarket stereo must specifically support Android Auto. Check the vehicle manufacturer or stereo maker for model-year and trim-level compatibility.
Wired setup and the cable issue
For a wired connection, use a short, high-quality USB data cable. Google recommends a cable generally shorter than one meter, or about three feet, with no hub or extension. A charge-only cable can power the phone without carrying the data required for projection.
A short USB data cable for Android Auto is a sensible troubleshooting accessory, but it is not a guaranteed cure. Replace the cable first when Android Auto previously worked and suddenly stopped, especially if the connection drops when the phone moves or the car crosses bumps. Confirm that the replacement cable supports data transfer and has the connector your phone requires.
Do not use a hub, extension, loosely fitting adapter, or damaged cable while diagnosing the problem. If a known-good short cable does not help, investigate the vehicle port, phone USB port, Android Auto permissions, and the head unit rather than repeatedly buying cables.

Wireless setup and adapters
For native wireless Android Auto, pair the phone and car over Bluetooth. During initial setup, keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services enabled. The car must support wireless Android Auto, not merely Bluetooth audio or wired Android Auto.

Some third-party devices act as a bridge for vehicles that support wired Android Auto but not wireless projection. A wireless Android Auto adapter can be worth considering only after verifying all of the following:
- The vehicle or stereo already supports wired Android Auto.
- The adapter supports your phone’s Android version and connection method.
- The adapter’s compatibility list includes your exact head unit or vehicle configuration.
- The vehicle’s USB port provides the required data connection and power.
- The seller offers a practical return policy in case the adapter conflicts with the head unit.
Adapters are not universal upgrades. They cannot turn every USB-equipped car into an Android Auto vehicle, and they may introduce startup delays, reconnection problems, or incompatibility with particular stereos.
Known Android Auto 12.6-era problems
Wireless connection reports on some BMW systems
Users in Google’s Android Auto community reported that wireless connectivity stopped working after updating to 12.6.64 on some BMW systems. These are user reports, not a controlled test or a Google-wide defect notice. They show that some users experienced a version-related compatibility problem, but they do not establish that 12.6 caused wireless failures in all BMWs.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If your BMW or another vehicle lost wireless projection after an update, test wired Android Auto, restart the phone and head unit, remove and re-create the Bluetooth pairing, and check for a vehicle infotainment update. Avoid assuming that installing an archived APK will solve the issue; the failure may involve the vehicle firmware, Bluetooth pairing state, Google Play services, or a server-side change.
Assistant calling and messaging failures
An August 2024 report described Google Assistant repeatedly asking who the user wanted to call or failing to complete calls and messages. The issue was acknowledged in the Android Auto community, and reporting at the time said that Android Auto 12.7 beta had not yet fixed it.
This does not prove that 12.6 caused the bug or that 12.6 fixed it. For this symptom, check the selected phone account, contact permissions, Assistant language and voice settings, Bluetooth calling permissions, and whether the issue occurs outside Android Auto. If navigation and media work but voice calls fail, the problem may be isolated to Assistant, contacts, or the phone’s Bluetooth profile.
Troubleshooting Android Auto after updating
- Check compatibility. Confirm Android version, vehicle or stereo support, mobile data, and—if wireless—5 GHz Wi-Fi capability.
- Replace the cable for wired use. Use a short, known-good data cable without a hub or extension.
- Restart both sides. Restart the phone and fully restart the vehicle’s infotainment system according to the manufacturer’s procedure.
- Re-pair wireless connections. Remove the car from the phone’s Bluetooth settings and the phone from the car’s paired-device list, then pair again with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services enabled.
- Check permissions and accounts. Verify that Android Auto, Google, Assistant, contacts, phone, SMS, and notification permissions have not been revoked.
- Update related components. Check Google Play for Android Auto, Google, Google Maps, and Google Play services updates, as well as firmware updates for the head unit.
- Test another connection mode. Wired success with wireless failure points toward wireless pairing, Wi-Fi, adapter, or vehicle support. Failure in both modes points to a broader phone, account, app, or head-unit problem.
- Undo a problematic historical APK. If sideloading 12.6 made the problem worse, restore the current Play-delivered version rather than repeatedly changing APK variants.
If your car does not support Android Auto
Do not buy an Android Auto cable or wireless adapter expecting it to add projection to a vehicle that lacks a compatible head unit. A USB port by itself is insufficient.

The usual hardware route is an Android Auto-compatible aftermarket stereo, but fitment depends on the vehicle’s dashboard, wiring, steering-wheel controls, backup camera, amplifier, and factory displays. Check the exact vehicle, model year, trim, and existing stereo before buying. Professional installation may be appropriate where factory integrations or safety-related systems are involved.
Should you install Android Auto 12.6 today?
| Your situation | Best choice |
|---|---|
| You simply want Android Auto working | Use Google Play and install the current compatible release. |
| You are investigating a regression that began after a newer update | Document the current version, check official support and vehicle updates, and consider a historical build only for controlled testing. |
| You found a 12.6 APK online | Verify publisher, signature, architecture, Android requirement, and package variant before doing anything. |
| Your wired connection is intermittent | Try a short, high-quality USB data cable before changing software. |
| Your vehicle has wired but not wireless Android Auto | Check vehicle and phone compatibility before considering a wireless adapter. |
| Your vehicle has no Android Auto support | Research a vehicle-compatible aftermarket head unit or authorized installation service. |
Bottom line on Android Auto 12.6
Android Auto 12.6.6432 should be described as a stable maintenance update from August 2024. Its confirmed release note says bug fixes and other improvements, but it does not provide a feature-by-feature changelog. The Assistant animation and Google Maps incident reporting discussed at the time were not proven to be exclusive 12.6 features.
For current users, Google Play is the right download source. For historical testing, an archived APK requires careful variant selection, signature verification, and a plan to roll back. If Android Auto is unreliable, start with compatibility, the USB cable, pairing, permissions, and vehicle firmware—not with the assumption that an old APK will fix every car.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Android Auto 12.6 version number?
Android Auto 12.6 was associated with build 12.6.6432. Archived variants appeared from August through early September 2024, but those dates do not prove one global rollout date.
What new features came with Android Auto 12.6?
No major user-facing feature is confirmed. Google described the release only as bug fixes and other improvements. Assistant interface changes and Google Maps incident reporting from the same period were not proven to be exclusive to 12.6.
Where should I download Android Auto 12.6?
Use Google Play for normal installation. Android Auto is integrated into many supported Android phones, and phones running Android 10 or newer generally do not need a separate installation. An archived APK is appropriate only for cautious historical testing or troubleshooting.
Is it safe to install the Android Auto 12.6 APK?
An archived APK may install but still be incompatible with current Google services, your Android version, vehicle, region, or head unit. Match the architecture and variant, verify the Google LLC signature, and keep a rollback path.
What phones support Android Auto?
Google’s current guidance generally requires Android 9 or newer for wired Android Auto and Android 11 or newer for wireless projection, with compatible vehicle hardware and an active data plan. Android Auto is not available on Android Go devices.
The Bottom Line
Android Auto 12.6 was a historical bug-fix release, not a major feature update. Download the current version through Google Play. Use an archived 12.6 APK only for a specific testing or rollback reason, and verify its variant and signature before installation.
