Android Auto 11.8 was a genuine 2024 release best known for redesigning the Android Auto settings menu on the phone with Google’s Material You visual language. It was not primarily a redesign of the Android Auto dashboard shown on a vehicle’s infotainment screen.
In 2026, downloading an old Android Auto 11.8 APK is generally not the right way to get the feature. Google says Android Auto is integrated into compatible Android phones and recommends using the normal Android and Google Play update paths instead.

Android Auto 11.8 was released in 2024 and was associated with a substantial redesign of the Android Auto settings experience. Contemporary reporting documented the change on April 24, 2024, including a Material You-inspired layout, updated colors, rounded interface elements, revised spacing and typography, and improved dark-mode behavior.

The important distinction is where the redesign appears. The change primarily affects the Android Auto settings menu on your phone. It should not be described as a complete redesign of the projected Android Auto interface on the car’s display.

Android Auto features can also roll out gradually. Appearance and availability may differ by Android version, phone manufacturer, country, Google account, vehicle and later Android Auto updates.
Contemporary coverage of the Android Auto 11.8 redesign reported that the redesigned settings experience was made available by default with the update.
What changed in the settings menu?
- Material You styling: The layout uses a more modern Google design language, with rounded controls, cards and interface elements.
- Updated organization: Settings are presented in a cleaner, more structured arrangement.
- Theme-responsive colors: The color treatment can respond to the phone’s system theme.
- Dark-mode support: The settings interface was reported to provide clearer dark-mode support.
- Refined typography and spacing: Text, sections and controls received a more consistent visual treatment.
This was mainly a presentation and organization update. It does not mean that every Android Auto setting was newly added or that every reported feature arrived on every device.

On many Android phones, the route is:
- Open Settings.

- Choose Connection preferences.
- Tap Android Auto.
Labels vary between Pixel, Samsung, Motorola, Xiaomi, OnePlus and other Android devices. If you cannot find the menu, use the Settings search box and search for Android Auto. Some phones also list it under Apps or expose it through a connected-car settings page.

Do you still need to download Android Auto 11.8?
Usually, no. As of September 2026, Android Auto 11.8 is a historical version rather than a version that should automatically be treated as current. Google’s support documentation says Android Auto is integrated into compatible Android phones and does not need to be downloaded as a separate application for use on a compatible car display.
Use this order instead:
- Install any available Android system update.
- Install available Google Play system updates.
- Open the Google Play Store and search for Android Auto.
- Tap Update if an update is offered.
- Restart the phone and the vehicle’s infotainment system.
- Reconnect the phone and test Android Auto again.
Depending on the phone and Android release, Android Auto may be updated through integrated Google system components rather than appearing like an ordinary app that you launch independently. See Google’s current Android Auto setup guidance.

| Fix a connection problem | Troubleshoot the cable, vehicle compatibility, pairing and receiver firmware before changing APKs. |
Community discussion has referred to build 11.8.641604, but that number is an anecdotal build identifier rather than an official universal package specification. An APK from an unknown source may be modified, incorrectly packaged or incompatible with your phone.
Risks of sideloading
- The APK may be repackaged or malicious.
- The package may target a different processor architecture or Android version.
- A split APK may not install correctly as a single file.
- A newer system-integrated Android Auto package may prevent downgrading.
- The signature may not match the installed component.
- An old build may lack current security, compatibility and vehicle-support fixes.
- Google may replace or block the older installation.
If an installation fails, do not bypass Android security protections casually. The safer recovery is to remove the unofficial build if possible, reinstall or update Android Auto through the supported channel, restart the phone and head unit, and pair the vehicle again.
Android Auto compatibility requirements
Android Auto requires both a compatible phone and a compatible vehicle or aftermarket receiver. A vehicle having a USB port does not automatically mean it supports Android Auto.

If the Material You redesign is missing
First confirm that you are checking the phone’s Android Auto settings, not the car screen. Other possible explanations include:
- Your phone manufacturer has placed Android Auto under a different Settings category.
- Android or Google Play system components are out of date.
- The feature did not roll out to your particular device configuration.
- Your phone is running a modified or incompatible software build.
- An APK did not replace the existing system-integrated component.
- A later Android Auto release changed or superseded the old 11.8 appearance.
- Dynamic colors and dark mode are being controlled by the phone’s system theme.
Installing 11.8 cannot guarantee that the old interface will appear on every phone.
Connection troubleshooting before changing versions
- Confirm that the vehicle or receiver supports Android Auto.
- Enable Android Auto in the vehicle’s infotainment settings if necessary.
- For wired use, replace the cable with a short, high-quality data cable. Google recommends a cable preferably under 1 meter (3 feet) and advises against hubs and extensions.
- Restart both the phone and infotainment system.
- Disconnect and reconnect the phone.
- Check for a firmware update for an aftermarket receiver.
- If pairing remains broken, open Settings > Connected devices > Connection preferences > Android Auto > Previously connected cars, open the top-right menu and choose Forget all cars. Then pair the vehicle again.
For wireless problems, remember that phone compatibility alone is insufficient: the car or receiver must support wireless projection as well.

What about AI message summaries and EV features?
Some secondary reports connected Android Auto 11.8 with features such as AI-generated message summaries and improvements related to electric-vehicle navigation. These should not be treated as guaranteed properties of every 11.8 installation.
Availability could depend on market, account, rollout, phone, vehicle and companion software. The Material You settings redesign is the clearest documented change associated with 11.8. Google’s current pages discuss newer assistant behavior and EV navigation separately, so later features should not be retroactively attributed to every 11.8 build. See Google’s documentation for current assistant features and EV and navigation-related features.
Is the official beta a better alternative?
Users who want newer Android Auto features before a broad stable rollout can consider Google’s official beta program through Google Play. It is safer than downloading an APK from an unknown archive, but beta software can be unstable and is not ideal for a primary driving setup where reliability matters most. Details are available in Google’s Android Auto beta guidance.
Bottom line
Android Auto 11.8 was a legitimate 2024 update, and its headline change was a Material You redesign of the phone-side settings menu. In 2026, however, an archived 11.8 APK is not the normal or safest route. Update Android and Google Play components, use the supported Android Auto channel, and troubleshoot vehicle, cable and pairing issues before considering an unofficial historical build.
